World of Binoculars How Binoculars Works 4

Magnification All binoculars are described by using a pair of numbers, such as 7 50 or 8 30. The first number, including the x, represents magnification or "power". This tells the degree to which the object observed is enlarged. For example, a 7x binocular makes an object appear seven times closer than when viewed by the naked eye. There are some models of binoculars that offer variable magnification, usually in the range of 5x to 8x.They are called zoom binoculars, and in most cases are not very suited for astronomical observations because of the inferior optical quality and are best suited for everyday and travel use. 8 X 42 Seen by naked eye 8x 12x 20x Objective Lens Diameter The second number in the two-number code is aperture (from the Latin aperire to open ), the most important specification of binoculars because it determines the light gathering ability of your binoculars. It represents the diameter of each of the objective lenses (the lenses furthest from your eye), given in millimeters. Field of View The field of view is the area of sky or land seen through your binoculars, determined by the design of the instrument s optics. It is expressed in two ways; as the width in feet at 1,000m, or in degrees. Apparent Field of View Apparent field of view is the angle of the magnified field when you look through binoculars. The larger the apparent field of view is, the wider the field of view you can see even at high magnifications. With the conventional method used previously, the apparent field of view was calculated by multiplying the real field of view by the binocular magnification. (With this formula, apparent field of view wider than 65 is called wide field of view.) at 1000m at 1,000 meters is the width of the visible area at a distance of 1,000 meters, which can be seen without moving the binoculars. Magnification is not that important, and in most cases comes within the range of 7x to 12x. If the magnification exceeds these figures, most likely you won t be able to hold the binoculars steady enough and the images will be blurry and in constant movement. This is especially frustrating when observing faint objects like galaxies and nebulae. A tripod mount or image-stabilized binoculars will get rid of this problem. 1,000m at 1,000 m 5

World of Binoculars How Binoculars Works 6

Exit pupil diameter If you divide the objective lens diameter by the magnification, you will get a number approximately between 4 and 8. This number is called the exit pupil, and represents the diameter of the beam of light that leaves the eyepiece when you hold a binocular with the objective pointed towards a light source. For example, a 7 50 binocular has an exit pupil of 50 divided by 7, just over 7 millimeters in diameter. Ideally, the exit pupil of your binocular should be equal or slightly smaller than the pupil of your dark-adapted eye. In this way the binocular delivers the maximum amount of light and produces the brightest possible images for its aperture. Average young adults under dark night conditions have pupils that are open to about 7 millimeters. This means that any instrument with an exit pupil larger than 7 millimeters will only waste light, as only the center of the light beam could enter the eyes. As we get older our eyes dilate less, so the exit pupil size we need decreases to around 5 millimeters. Brightness Relative brightness value is obtained by squaring the diameter of the exit pupil. The greater the relative brightness is, the brighter the image will be. With 8x42 binoculars, the brightness is (42 8)2= 28.1. This means that if the magnification is the same, the larger the effective diameter of the objective lens, the brighter the image will be. Eye relief Eye relief is the distance behind the eyepiece lenses at which the image is in focus, and indicates how far the binoculars can be held from your eyes and still allow you to see the entire apparent field of view. In general, the longer the focal length of an eyepiece, the greater is the eye relief. Standard binoculars have eye relief ranging from only a few millimeters to 25 millimeters or more. Long eye relief is especially necessary for eyeglass wearers, because glasses increase the distance between the lens and your eye. In case your eyeglasses correct only for near or farsightedness, you can simply take them off and refocus the binocular to compensate. Shortest focus distance This indicates the distance to the nearest point that can be focused. Generally, binoculars are used to make distant objects appear nearer. However, you can also enjoy magnified images from a close distance, such as when appreciating works of art or observing plants and insects. In this case, the shorter the focus distance of binoculars, the more details you can see. Minimum close focusing distance of binoculars is 1 to 2 meter. Prism Type Porro prism binoculars are named after Italian optician Ignazio Porro who patented this image erecting system in 1854. Binoculars of this type use a Porro prism in a double prism Z-shaped configuration to erect the image. This feature results in binoculars that are wide, with objective lenses that are well separated but offset from the eyepieces. Porro prism designs have the added benefit of folding the optical path so that the physical length of the binoculars is less than the focal length of the objective and wider spacing of the objectives gives a better sensation of depth. Roof-prism The first prism of the roof prism system has one surface that does not feature total internal reflection, resulting in the loss of some light. To minimize this loss, it is necessary to apply coating on the surface to raise reflectivity. Also, to produce the roof surface of the second prism that delivers sharp images without a double image or flare, highly advanced technology to process its edge precisely is required. Because the optical path of the roof prism binoculars is straight, there can be a slimmer and compact body. PORRO ROOF 7

Icon explanation Porro prism type binocular. It uses 90 degrees prisms to turn the image the right way up. Offers great optic quality at the cost of a big size and weight. Roof prism type binocular. It uses a roof-shaped double prism to reflect the light and turn the image the right way up. Designed to let the light go in a straight line from the object lens to the eyepiece lens, this type is more slim and small sized. A binocular that uses the BaK4 prism which grant a high reflective strength. It provides a brighter and clear image. Uses an environment friendly Eco-glass. Fully multi-coated. The whole lenses and prism surface are multi coated to greatly reduce the light loss. Multi coated. Glass-to-air surface of the lens are multi coated to reduce light. Magenta coating. Mono-layer coating to reduce light loss. Phase coating. Special coating to correct the phase shift in roof prism type of binoculars guranteeing greater image resolution and contrast. 8

Center focus. Left and right eyepiece focus is adjusted at the same time with the focus ring in the center. Binoculars with an apparent field of view of 65* degrees or higher. *New calculation sets it to 60 degrees or greater. This model can change the magnification while observing an object. Center diopter adjustment system. In this type the diopter adjustment ring is before the focus ring. Easy to use. High eye relief. Model with 15mm or greater eye relief, it helps to avoid tiring eyes even in case of prolonged use and provides a large field of view also while using glasses. It makes easier to avoid dirt and prevents fogging due to the cold. Click diopter adjustment. Diopter adjustment ring with clicks to avoid changing even one degree after you have perfectly adjusted the diopter. Twist-up eye-cups. Easy to use even for people wearing glasses. Rubber exterior. Impact resistant, easy to grip. Waterproof design that prevents water to get inside the lens barrel even when dampened by rain or snow. 9
