OPEN TELCO: A take on the Virtual Central Office 0930-1000 Hanen Garcia, M. Eng. Global Telco Solutions Manager Red Hat, Inc.

CENTRAL OFFICE Current Status Desired Status Huge Source of CAPEX and OPEX Reduction CAPEX and OPEX > 30% Closed, Rigid and Complex Open, Flexible and Standardized Variety of access devices Cloud based Model Variety of purpose built hardware Software Defined and virtualized Lack of standard interfaces => Lack of programmability infrastructure Full programmability

VIRTUAL CENTRAL OFFICE Service Agility End to End Operational Efficiency Improved Customer Experience Lower Costs Define a cloud native approach for a virtualized central office leveraging NFV and open source technologies

VIRTUAL CENTRAL OFFICE PRINCIPLES VCO is a reference architecture based on three important principles 1. OpenDaylight as a common controller for both the virtual network overlay and the physical network fabric underlay 2. OpenStack as a common platform, for both NFV Infrastructure and VIM, to ensure an orchestrator agnostic framework 3. Consolidation of control plane functions into the virtualized infrastructure and the distribution of the data plane into the network fabric

OPNFV BAROMETER Project Strategy: Ensure platform metrics and events are accessible through industry standard interfaces. Demonstrate how platform technologies can be monitored, consumed and activated in real time Support relevant metrics and events for capacity planning, trending and operational status Showcase OPNFV centric SA capabilities.

SUMMARY Virtual Central Office allows a common architecture that can be scaled for all types of COs and Network NFV allows us to virtualize network functions and services easily OpenStack platform has matured and now used widely as NFVI and VIM In addition to vbng, vfw or other services such as Edge Compute for IoT and Mobile applications, Video caching and vbbu for C-RAN can be deployed at virtual CO OPNFV has worked hard to provide tools and testing guidelines for operators to ensure real world deployments Open source tools and components are now available to build the virtual CO
