PIC32 SK I/O Breakout Board
The PIC32 SK I/O Breakout board is a practical and useful board to let you develop your PIC32 Starter Kit application without the design of additional PCBs, thanks to the breakout of the Hirose FX10A-120S/12- SV1(71) connector of the PIC32 Starter Kits. This board expands the pinout of the aforementioned connector into standard 2.54mm pitch spaced connector letting you develop your embedded application in an easy way reducing costs and time. Board dimensions: 79x82 mm Front Figure 1. Back The pinout of the Hirose connector is drown in the back of the board considering the same enumeration of the connector itself as in the following figure. There are underlined also the pins that provide a power supply of 3.3V (VDD) and of 5V. It is possible to power on your board and starter kit through the Mini-USB connector of the starter kit or trough the 5V or VDD of the breakout board, depending on the available power supply. The breakout of the Hirose connector is in standard 2.54mm pitch spacing dividing the whole pinout into: 4 x 2.54mm pitch spacing connector 2 rows 20 ways 1 x 2.54mm pitch spacing connector 2 rows 40 ways 2 x 2.54mm pitch spacing connector 1 row 5 ways (ground pins) + 2 single pins.
Besides there is a practical hole in the center-bottom of the board to let you secure the PIC32 Starter Kit with the board through standard M3 screw. An example is shown in figure 2. Figure 2. The four holes on each corner let you build the structure in order to fix the board with the starter kit wherever needed. The following figures show a possible structure with standard M3 x 2.5cm spacers. Figure 3. If you need to build a standalone application, it is well known that PIC32 USB Starter kit and PIC32 Ethernet Starter kit do not support the standalone mode: more precisely if you just supply with 5V micro USB without connect the starter kit to the PC, the controller does not works (the basic PIC32 starter kit is an exception and works anyway). To avoid this problem, the board is equipped also with a small jumper to work in standalone mode both with USB and Ethernet starter kits, thanks also to two VDD vias available on the board, as shown in figure 4.
Jumper VDD Vias Figure 4. These vias, if connected properly to the starter kit, let you work in standalone mode. The right via is for the Ethernet Starter Kit while the left one is for the USB Starter Kit. The following picture shows where to connect the jumper on both starter kits (it is the second via of the connector J3). Figure 5. Please refer to the following pictures to see the correct connection of the jumper with the starter kits.
