AP Physics 1 and 2 Summer Assignment Due: First Day of Class Welcome to AP Physics! You are responsible for the material covered in the first three chapters of your textbook. The questions that follow each chapter will assess your knowledge and comprehension of the material within. Should you have difficulties, you may email me at kpuorro@barnegatschools.com with specific questions. The assignment consists of two parts: - Part 1: Lab skills. This segment will require you to collect data from a virtual lab experience, and analyze it appropriately. - Part 2: Mathematical Application. Here, your understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts will be assessed. These are mathematical skills that you will be using throughout the course. Show work where applicable to receive full credit. We will not be covering most of the topics from chapters two and three in detail during class time, however we will briefly review. You must self-assess your understanding to be successful! Your grade on this summer packet will be your first quiz grade, and a lab and test will follow within the first week of school. Good luck! Mrs. Puorro
Name: A: Ball Rolling on a Ramp PART 1: Lab Work Navigate to the Direct Measurements Videos library [http://serc.carleton.edu/dmvideos/videos.html] and select the Ball Rolling on a Ramp video. Click on the first video, and note the different features, such as the rules and the stopwatch. These may be useful. 1. Begin by making a position vs time graph using Google Sheets or Excel. Be sure the axes are labeled. You will need to PRINT the graph for later use. 2. Begin with creating and completing a data chart below. Use the large ruler, and begin collecting data just as the ball is released. The large ruler is designed to be used with the blue dot on the left end positioned on the ramp surface. Here are some questions to consider: a. At what location and time should the origin be set? That is, what position and time will you consider to be zero? b. How many data points will you need in order to establish the shape of the function? c. Which quantities go on each axis of the graph? d. How should the graph be labeled?
3. Once the data points are plotted, HAND DRAW a line or curve of best fit. What does the shape of this graph indicate about the velocity of the ball? 4. You ll need to use another method to more carefully analyze this situation: a velocity vs time graph. Select at least 6 points positions along the curve drawn on your position vs. time graph. For each, draw a line tangent to the curve, and determine the slope of the tangent line. This slope is the instantaneous velocity at this point. A data chart is shown to the right to assist you in organizing your data. Using the six values obtained, plot a graph of velocity vs. time using Google Sheets or Excel. 5. Once the data points are plotted, HAND DRAW a line or curve of best fit. What does the shape of this graph indicate about the motion of the ball? Use the graph to determine the acceleration of the ball down the ramp, and show work below.
Extension: B: Vector Assignment 1) For each of the following situations below, circle the appropriate signs for each quantity listed. Assume east is + and west is -. (a) An object starts at zero, moves 2m west speeding up. (b) An object starts at zero, and moves 3 m east at a constant speed. (c) An object presently at 5 m east, moving west and slowing down.
C: Graphing Analysis For each of the following situations below, sketch a graph to represent x vs. t, v vs. t, and a vs. t on the axis provided. a) A box slides down a frictionless ramp, moving towards the right:
b) A box slides down a frictionless ramp, moving towards the left: c) A box slides down a ramp, then continues to travel on a flat surface:
Part 2: Mathematical Applications Calculate the area of the following shapes. It may be necessary to break up the figure into common shapes. Calculate the unknown angle values for questions 3-6.
Calculate the following unknowns using trigonometry. Use a calculator, but work beneath the problem. Please include appropriate units with all answers. (Watch the unit prefixes!)
