LESSON 1 SECURITY FIRST Apple s latest operating system has several new features tied to your specific location. In this lesson we will cover the new privacy settings and revisit existing ones to make sure you are using the safest settings possible. SECURITY SETTINGS YOU SHOULD CHECK IMMEDIATELY IOS 8. INSTRUCTOR DEMO. 1. Limit Apps from tracking your location in the background 2. Prevent apps from accessing, uploading your data 3. Allow imessages, voice, and video to expire over time 4. Stop sharing your location with others 5. Choose to limit advertisers tracking your location, data 6. Create a more robust 8-digit backup password 7. Limit what is displayed on your lock screen 8. Change your search setting to a do-not-track service 9. Disable iphone, ipad from tracking your frequently-visited locations 10. Display location icon in status bar when tracking 11. Prevent iphone location-based tracking 12. Lower auto-lock feature for greater security LESSON 2 INTERFACE CONCERNS Question: How do you operate your iphone or ipad (or any ios mobile device) without ever touching the home button? IPAD GESTURES (AND MULTI-TOUCH OPTIONS) TO WORK FASTER Pinch or Stretch (or Spread) Place two fingers, like your thumb and index finger, on the edges of a map, Web page, almost anything, and then make a pinching motion. Today we will use a Safari as an example of this. Pinching will make the area on the map smaller. Stretching will have the opposite (zooming) effect. So remember Pinching shrinks, Stretching zooms. 2
Four-or-Five Finger swipe/pinch. First tap Settings>General>Multitasking* Gestures. Turn this feature On. The description is found underneath. Instructor Demo: To quickly reveal the multi-tasking bar, use four or five fingers to swipe upward. **Swipe left or right with four or five fingers to switch between recently used apps. If you have drifted far from home, pinch, using four or five fingers to jump to your Home screen. HIDDEN COMMANDS AND MENUS - DEMO KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS Keyboard shortcuts are those 2-3 letter codes for phrases you type often. You can add as many as you want and you ll never have to type the phrase again. Go to Settings>General>Keyboard>Shortcuts LESSON 3 SIRI AS YOUR PERSONAL R.E. ASSISTANT It s nice to have your handheld ioffice on the road with a personal assistant in tow. That s what Siri provides an ipad or iphone owner. It s programmed to understand regular conversational language. Let s begin by turning her on, Go to Settings>General>Siri and turn it on. What s new in ios 8: 1. Siri can now be activated via voice command, but only if the device is plugged into a power source. Go to Siri>Allow Hey Siri. 2. You can see what Siri thinks you're saying in real time, instead of having to wait until it processes your words to realize it misheard you. 3. ijm Tip of the Day - Stop typing! Use your voice. Tell my husband I m on my way home. 4. Now Siri can navigate to settings and perform functions while you sit back and relax. Try, Open Settings. OR Turn off Bluetooth Open Evernote 5. Pronunciation Lesson. Siri can now be told, by you, That s not how you pronounce that and Siri will walk you through helping her with correction. Dates/times and addresses are often hyperlinked to the calendar and maps respectively.
