NZQF NQ Ref 0247 Version 7 Page 2 of 8 National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Introductory Skills) (Level 2) with strands in Surface Extraction, and Underground Extraction Level 2 Credits 43 or 45 Purpose The National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Introductory Skills) (Level 2) with strands in Surface Extraction, and Underground Extraction is designed for an entry-level worker at a surface or underground extraction site. The qualification comprises compulsory and elective sections that recognise the skills and knowledge required to work in extractive industries and strands for surface and underground contexts. The core compulsory section recognises skills and knowledge related to health and safety in the workplace, first aid, and basic fire fighting. These skills and knowledge prepare candidates for the potential danger involved with extractives environments, particularly while people are becoming familiar with the hazards associated with their role. Core Elective 1 provides opportunities for employers and candidates to select standards from anywhere on the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS), whilst core elective 2 recognises skills and knowledge related to communication. The strands recognise skills and knowledge required for the context in which the holder of the certificate works or intends to work. This qualification is a foundation qualification for a pathway that comprises the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Operations) (Level 3) with strands in Coal Plant, Drilling Surface, Drilling Underground, Maintenance Operations, Metalliferous Processing, Mobile Plant Surface, Processing Plant, Surface Extraction, Underground Extraction, and Water Treatment [Ref:1521]; and culminates in the National Diploma in Extractive Industries (Management) with strands in Surface Extraction, and Underground Extraction [Ref: 0806]. Unit standards and achievement standards that are equivalent in outcome are mutually exclusive for the purpose of award. The table of mutually exclusive standards is provided on the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) website: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/standards/standards-exclusionlist/. Reviewed standards that continue to recognise the same overall outcome are registered as new versions and retain their identification number (ID). Any version of a standard with the same ID may be used to meet qualification requirements that list the ID and/or that specify the past or current classification of the standard. NZQF NQ Ref 0247 Version 7 Page 6 of 8 Transition Arrangements Version 6 Version 6 was issued following a revision of the qualification. Changes were made to update unit standard listings following a review of First Aid unit standards, and to ensure sufficient options are available for trainees in all extractives workplace contexts to meet the requirements of the strand electives. Changes to structure and content: Standards 6400-6402 were replaced by standards 26551 and 26552 in the Core Compulsory. The requirements for Core Elective 1 were increased from a minimum of 5 credits at Level 2 or above to a minimum of 6 credits at Level 2 or above. The Occupational Health and Safety Practice domain was added to the Surface Extraction Strand Elective and the Underground Extraction Strand Elective. The overall credit requirement was decreased from 44 or 46 to 43 or 45. For detailed information see Review Summaries on the NZQA website. All new trainees will be enrolled in programmes leading to the new version of the qualification. People currently working towards version 4 or 5 of this qualification may either complete the requirements for that version or transfer their results to this version of the qualification. This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards see table below. Credit for Exempt from 6400 26551, 26552 6401 26552 6402 26551 It is not intended that anyone be disadvantaged by this revision, and the above arrangements have been designed for a smooth transition. However, anyone who feels they have been disadvantaged may appeal to MITO New Zealand (Incorporated) at the address above. Previous versions of the qualification Version 5 was issued following a restructuring of the Extractives qualifications to greater reflect the pathway taken by people working in the industry.
NZQF NQ Ref 0247 Version 7 Page 7 of 8 The title was changed to amend the descriptor (Introductory Skills) and to include the qualification level, which changed from 2 or 3 (depending on strand) to 2; overall credit requirement was decreased from 55-64 to 44 or 46; standards 8922 and 23648 were added to the Core Compulsory; standard 2401 was moved from Core Elective 1 to the Core Compulsory; standards 1178, 2977, 2989, 3483, 3490, 9677, 15851 and 21912 were removed from Core Elective 1; standard 1277 was moved from Core Elective 1 to Core Elective 2; standard 9680 was added to Core Elective 2; and the titles, levels and credits of reviewed standards were updated. The credit requirement for the Surface Extraction Strand Elective was reduced from 31 to 14 and the Surface Metalliferous Mining domain was added to the Surface Extraction Strand Elective. The credit requirement for the Underground Extraction Strand Elective was reduced from 38 to 14 and the Underground Metalliferous Mining domain was added to the Underground Extraction Strand Elective. The Extractive Industries Management domain in the Strand Elective sets was removed. Version 4 was issued to update the titles, levels, and credits of reviewed standards. Core Elective 3 was deleted.
