European Master s in Translation (EMT) Frequently asked questions (FAQ) General EMT competences EMT application procedure Online-application tool General 1. How does the EMT take account of local conditions? The 2017 EMT competence framework sets out generic professional competences, but EMT members are free to choose how they apply it in terms of teaching methods, adjustment to specific environments and responding to the needs of the local market (e.g. for multilingual operators, audio-visual translators, legal translators or other specialised language workers). There may be a demand for combinations of English and the language of a neighbouring country (e.g. Croatian in Slovenia, Russian in Finland or Polish in Lithuania) or for knowledge of languages used outside Europe (e.g. Japanese or Vietnamese). The EMT focuses on results, but the choice of training methods and procedures remains totally open: distance training, learner-centred teaching, portfolios, simulations, mentoring, etc. The EMT framework does not stipulate what resources are necessary for achieving the objectives of high-quality training, as human, institutional, financial, legal, technical and pedagogical contexts vary among universities and cannot be standardised throughout the EU. 2. Why does the call for EMT applications distinguish between universities in EU Member States and those in non-eu countries? Although the EMT is coordinated by the European Commission s Directorate-General for Translation (DGT), participation is not limited to universities in the EU. Translation study programmes run by universities in certain countries outside the EU (candidate countries, those involved in the EU Neighbourhood Policy and Russia and Switzerland) are also eligible. If selected for membership, they participate in the activities of the EMT network on the same footing as EU members. The only differences are that non-eu members attend EMT meetings at their own expense and they cannot take part in EMT Board elections. 1

3. Is the EMT project intended exclusively to meet the needs of the EU and other international institutions? No. The EMT stems from the rapidly growing need for high-level linguistic services, fuelled by globalisation, unprecedented technological progress and demographic shifts. Also, developments in the translation profession and the new (Bologna Process) impetus to modernise higher education call for much more cooperation in the field of translation at European level. The EMT thus addresses the needs of international institutions, but has relevance beyond them. 4. What is the current role of the European Commission and the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) in the EMT project? DGT is the main coordinator of the EMT. It supervises the evaluation procedures for translation programmes applying for membership of the network and takes the final decision on selection. DGT provides the secretariat for the network and coordinates the organisation of regular meetings. It provides resources that should allow the network to develop, in the long run, into a self-sustaining, professional European organisation. 5. The European Master s in Conference Interpreting (EMCI) project currently admits only one member programme per EU Member State. What is the EMT approach? The EMT does not limit the number of programmes per country, so any number of master s level translation programmes may be selected from a given Member State, provided they fulfil the admission criteria. Both projects aim to set and maintain high quality standards the main difference is due to the nature of the markets for translation and interpretation: the translation market usually has more job openings for graduates. EMT competences 6. How did you decide on the five areas of competence? The 2017 EMT competence framework is largely based on a competence profile developed by a group of prominent translation scholars in 2009. The profile was reviewed by the EMT network members in 2014-2019 to take account of subsequent changes in the translation industry (mainly as regards markets, technology and academic contexts). The areas of competence were determined in consultation with the members of the LIND Board (LIND stands for Language Industry), who provided a useful reality check from the point of view of the language industry. 7. Are there preferred working languages and specialisations for EMT programmes? No. The EMT does not list working languages or give preference to particular specialisations. Translation markets are diverse and their requirements vary in terms of occupations, specialisations and working languages. It is up to each programme to define areas of specialisation and working languages in the light of its own objectives, ambitions and resources, and to determine, for example, what status it wishes to give to English (as a working or teaching language). From now on, programmes that focus on literary translation or terminology with a view to preparing professional editors or technical writers for the labour market are eligible for EMT membership as long as they fulfil the minimum criteria in the competences framework. 2

8. What is the status of research in the EMT framework? Research cannot replace any of the five core competences. However, programmes are free to add research and/or other competences considered essential to their graduates profile. Translation programmes with a research component at master s level or doctorate programmes affiliated with the same institute ensure that students acquire state-of-the-art knowledge of translation theory and practice, as well as insights into research methodologies and work in research teams. EMT application procedure 9. Should applications for the EMT network be submitted in English? For organisational reasons, DGT has decided to use the EU institutions procedural languages for the evaluation procedure, so interested parties are asked to complete the application forms in German, English or French. Supporting documents may be submitted in the original language, provided that it is an official EU language. Supporting documents in other languages should be accompanied by a translation into German, English or French. 10. Can a study programme covering both translation and interpretation apply for EMT membership? Yes. There are many such programmes across Europe and they can of course apply, but only the translation strand of the programme will be taken into account in the EMT selection process. Applicants should ensure that the information they give in the application form clearly refers to the translation strand. 11. What about programmes that do not cover translation exclusively, but as a separate strand? The EMT is primarily for MA translation programmes. However, since education systems differ across Europe, applications from programmes offering translation as a particular strand are not excluded, provided they lead to a degree of a similar level. Applicants must make sure that the information they give in the application relates only to the translation strand. If the application is successful, the EMT label will apply to the translation strand only, not to the programme as a whole. 12. The translation study programme for which I would like to apply will be re - organised in the academic year following the EMT selection. Do I apply for the current programme or the new one? The evaluation of the EMT applications will cover the last five years of the programme concerned, i.e. it will concern the data provided for the current programme. In the descriptive part of the application (i.e. the open questions concerning the strategies to which you should reply directly on EU Survey) you have the possibility to describe the changes that the new programme will bring. If successful the EMT label will be granted to the current programme. The EMT label will not be automatically transferred from this programme to the new programme! EMT members have the obligation to notify the EMT Board in writing of all changes that might affect their compliance with EMT requirements. A reorganisation is considered as such a change. 3

13. Our institute offers several translation study programmes or one translation programme and one translation and interpreting programme. Should we submit a joint EMT-application or should we apply for each programme separately? There is no general reply to this question, both approaches are possible. Filing a joint or a separate application will depend a lot on the overlap between the individual programmes. If there is a lot of overlap, a joint application is recommended; separate applications may be more appropriate for programmes with largely differing curricula. Online application tool 14. How can I save and print the draft version of my online application as pdf? In the 2018-2019 selection EMT applications shall be submitted online, via the application tool on EUSurvey. Please note that clicking on Download PDF version on the right-hand side of the menu will only download the questions. The easiest way to print and save your draft answers as PDF is to print the webpage to PDF directly from your browser. 15.
