Multi Cloud Journey 1 2 3 4 Why and when Internal organisational analysis and change First jump into the cloud Multi cloud jump DSS Multi Cloud Journey 12
Why and When 1 Australian Government Digital Transformation Strategy Australian Government Cloud Computing Policy Initiative started early 2014 to support a programme of work that was building a shared service for the Federal Gov.» Cloud (and automation) was seen as a key building block to achieve the outcome to successfully deliver a shared service Organisation change to support the goal» Created the Cloud Automation team as part of a project, and now transitioned into a BAU team (currently team size of 20) OPEX funding model DSS Multi Cloud Journey 13
Australian Government Cloud Computing Policy 1 Goal The Australian Government will reduce the cost of government ICT by eliminating duplication and fragmentation and will lead by example in using cloud services to reduce costs, lift productivity and develop better services Statement Non-corporate commonwealth entities are required to use cloud services for new ICT services and when replacing any existing ICT services, whenever the cloud services:» are fit for purpose;» offer the best value for money, as defined by the Commonwealth Procurement Rules; and» provide adequate management of risk to information and ICT assets as defined by the Protective Security Policy Framework; DSS Multi Cloud Journey 14
Internal organisational analysis and change 2 Landscape pre-cloud (and automation) Issues with provisioning» Project focused projects managed siloed technical teams Ineffective and inefficient practices» Timeliness for builds Configuration drift impacting SDLC and adding risk to releases» Perpetual environments (Development, Test & Production)» Accumulating technical debt DSS Multi Cloud Journey 15
Projects Managed Technical Teams 2 PROJECTS Windows Server OS Linux Server OS Directory Service Database Processing Capacity Virtualisation SAN IP Network Connectivity Firewall Load Balancer Backup DSS Multi Cloud Journey 16
Internal organisational analysis and change 2 Goal Cloud (Services) Computing Model Service oriented model» Standardised function Standardised service offering» Organisational driven, not project Consolidated technical management» Reduced technical management overhead» Reduced licensing overhead DSS Multi Cloud Journey 17

Identified Challenges 4 Business process change» Project environment management Cultural change» Process automation Organisational change» Team changes to accommodate automation DSS Multi Cloud Journey 23
Lessons Learned 4 Internal governance on automated service offerings» Controlling change after standardisation Greater analysis on the nature of cloud offerings» Private and public DSS Multi Cloud Journey 24
Cloud Automation Achievements 4 System provisioning reduced from 920 hours of effort to 32 hours Approximately 10% of system workload located with cloud provider (NTT) plan to increase Positioned cloud capability to allow continued growth Improved security with non-perpetual environments Creating technical wealth DSS Multi Cloud Journey 25
