Application Note Create, Export and Import Machine Templates in SKF @ptitude Observer 9 Introduction Working with machine templates is a time saving method when creating a new machine in SKF @ptitude Observer. There are three options to create a new machine: 1 Create a blank machine 2 Create a machine from an existing machine template 3 Create a machine by copying from an existing machine in the hierarchy tree In this application note we will focus on the use of the machine templates. Basically how to create, export and import a machine template. Fig. 1 shows the three ways on how to create a new machine, and one of these ways is to create a new machine from a machine template. A machine template can be shared with different users through the SKF Online Repository (SKF OR). See application note CM3213, Machine Part Tool in SKF @ptitude Observer 9. Note! Machine templates that have been created in SKF @ptitude Observer 8.X can also be imported into version 9 by selecting the option "From machine template" in fig. 1. Fig. 1. Three ways of creating a machine in SKF @ptitude Observer.

Procedure Create a machine template In order to create a machine template, select the machine in the hierarchy tree. In this case, a belt driven fan was selected. Then right-click on the machine and select Tools / Generate machine template ( fig. 2). A Machine template window will be opened ( fig. 3). Type the name of the machine template and click Ok. In this case, the new template is named Fan 2. The existing templates can be viewed by using the Machine Template Library (Database / Libraries / Machine template library) ( fig. 4). Fig. 2. Generate a machine template. Fig. 3. Name the machine template with an appropriate name. 2

Fig. 4. The new machine template "Fan 2" is now visible in the Machine template library. In the machine template library, the user can: Delete a template from the machine template library Export a machine template to a file with the file extension.omt Import a machine template from a file into the machine template library 3

Exporting a machine template We will export the recently created machine template Fan 2. Select the machine Fan 2 in the list and click the Export button in fig. 4. The window in fig. 5 will be opened. Give the export file a name. In this case, it was called Belt driven fan. Click the Save button to save the machine template export file in a user selectable folder. In this case, the file was stored in a folder called Downloads. The extension of the stored file is.omt ( fig. 6). Fig. 5. Save the exported machine template. Fig. 6. The "Belt driven fan.omt" was saved in a user selected folder called "Downloads". 4

Import a machine template From the Machine template library, the user can import a template. To import a machine template, select Import in fig. 4. Select the file to import; here the file Siemens 1.5 MW template was selected in the file explorer ( fig. 7). This template is an SKF @ptitude Observer 8.5 template. By clicking Open in fig. 7, the new template will be stored in the Machine template library. Note! In this case, the imported template was saved in a user selectable folder called Downloads, but the imported file can be uploaded to the Machine template library from any user selectable folder in the file explorer. The imported machine template Siemens was stored in the Machine template library ( fig. 8). Fig. 7. Importing the file "Siemens 1.5 MW template" to SKF @ptitude Observer. Fig. 8. The imported machine template "Siemens..." has been stored in the Machine template library. 5
