Enabling the Private Sector to Power its Operations with Renewable Energy: Side event on the CEM Corporate Sourcing Experiences and inspiration from Denmark Kim Møller Porst/ Special Advisor Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate Abu Dhabi, 1 November 2016 Side 1
I will touch on 1.The importance of the corporate sourcing campaign 2. How corporate sourcing fits with Danish global strategic priorities for international energy cooperation 3. Experiences with corporate sourcing in DK 4. A case study of DK s attractiveness to energy intensive data centres who would like to run their operations on RES and tranform themselves to corporate prosumers
1. Importance of the campaign
Importance of the campaign: To move from promises to action IRENA s role: Analytical power house and independent knowledge hub
2. Match with Danish global strategic priorities
DK s engagement: Companies are an important factor for increasing RES demand Motivation? Export Cost efficient emission reductions
Stimulating global demand for RES is an integral part of the Danish global strategic priorities via: Government to government cooperation on regulatory issues Promotion of Danish technologies/export Consolidation of the international architecture and active participation in mult. cooperation by sharing of best practice Mobilization of (private) climate finance to get projects of the ground
3. Experiences with corporate sourcing in DK
Denmark allows for different ways for corporations to drive the change to RES by stimulating demand Certification PPA (incl. PF) REAL RES power (incl. bal) Installations
Alternative market players have been a vital part of the Danish RES history
In Denmark we experience a new demand for a systematic approach
4. Case study of Denmark: Why we are attractive to data centres who would like to run their operations on RES
Share of RES and future goals Electricity can easily be bought so it only comes from renewable sources (reliable certification and options for PPA) thus creating green and environmentally friendly data centres. By 2035 (by 2020 app 80%) all electricity is planned to be generated from renewable sources such as: Wind power Solar Biomass Hydro (via NordPool)
The integrated energy system allows for environmentally friendly use of waste heat Heating of buildings in Denmark relies heavily on district heating, mainly from CHP plants. 62 % of Danish households are heated by district heating. Heat from data centres and other types of waste heat can be used for district heating. Three major advantages: 1. Use waste heat and conserve the planets natural resources 2. Reduce carbon emissions from coal and gas fired CHPs 3. Increase overall energy efficiency
A large share of VRE in combination with a very stable grid Most reliable power grid in Europe (after Luxembourg) 99,997% power grid uptime no need for an emergency generator Connected both to the main European and the Nordic Backbone Grids New submarine cables to Norway and the Netherlands (and the UK) Nordpool market place among the most competitive in Europe
Denmark s competitive advantage is not only RES Political, economic and environmental security & stability Large scale sites available Excellent fibre connectivity Competitive electricity prices Cool climate = free air cooling No. 1 in Europe for fast building permits
The elephant(s) in the room Challenges with Transformed energy market New market players on the power market Regulation, PSO, taxes etc.
EXAMPLES
Apple to Invest 1.7 Billion in New European Data Centres This significant new investment represents Apple s biggest project in Europe to date. We re thrilled to be expanding our operations, creating hundreds of local jobs and introducing some of our most advanced green building designs yet. Tim Cook, CEO, Apple State-of-the-art facilities in Ireland and Denmark will run on 100 percent renewable energy Each data centre will measure166,000 square metres. Facilities will have the lowest environmental impact yet for an Apple data centre. Apple will also work with local partners to develop additional renewable energy sources. Our commitment to environmental responsibility is good for the planet, good for our business and good for the European economy. - Lisa Jackson, Apple s vice president of Environmental Initiatives
Data Centre Supplier Chooses Denmark to Leverage the Danish Business Conditions Economic stability and an innovative and effective professional culture make Denmark an ideal place to conduct business. (..) In Denmark we can further pursue cutting-edge green solutions that are central to Interxion s strategy business. PEDER BANK, MANAGING DIRECTOR, INTERXION NORDIC Interxion is one of the leading suppliers of cloud- and co-location data centers in Europe In Copenhagen, Interxion s 20 employees run a 3,500m2 data center using solely renewable energy sources Denmark offers a geographic location as a fiber and infrastructure gateway to the Nordics combined with cold, calm climate and a world class electricity grid Low risk society also in terms of cyber security and a stable financial market
KEY POINTS 1.The question if not whether the corporate sector can drive deployment of RES it is already happening. 2. Need for exchange of best practices among governments please participate in the survey. Thank you for your attention. Happy to take questions.
