Fundamentals Windows 8.1 Operating System Exercises Classroom exercises: The following exercises are to be completed in class. Use the Help in Windows 8.1 Operating System to complete the following tasks and the book Supporting Windows 8: Featuring the Latest Windows 8.1 Release by Jean Andrews. And be sure to ask for help from your instructor when you are unable to complete an exercise. Refer to page 6 for information on how to access the classroom servers. 1. Load the Windows 8.1 Operating System on a 60 GB NTFS partition on a physical computer or on a virtual machine. Use the following Microsoft Account and password to set up the operating system (Read chapter 2 before installing the operating system). And use the Microsoft Account listed below during the installation. Note: Skip past the part where you are asked if you want to receive a text message for verification (if you are prompted for a text message). (Chapter 2, pages 42 45) Microsoft Account information for logon Account Name: Password: vace1234 Or create your own unique Microsoft account during installation Verify that you have network access after installation and check the Device Manager to make sure all drivers have been installed. If there are missing drivers be sure to download and properly install them. Read chapter 1 in the Windows 8 book and continue with the exercises. 2. Name the two Windows interfaces that are a part of Windows 8 3. Go to the Start Screen and resize the Desktop Tile to the largest size 4. Use the search in the charms bar to open the Maps program. 5. Use the Charms bar to return to the Start Screen. 6. Go to the Windows desktop and open Notepad and create a document and save it in One Drive (SkyDrive) and call it Document1. Page 1 of 10
7. Go to the Microsoft Store, download and install a Calculator App. Pin the App to the Start Panel and the taskbar. Resize the tile to the medium size or large size. 8. Go to System Properties (System Icon in the control panel) and write down the following information about your computer: Processor Installed memory (RAM) Operating System type 9. From the Device Manager determine what type of hardware is installed in your computer. Display adapter Network adapter Disk Drive(s) 10. Use the Search in the Charms Bar to find the snipping tool and launch the snipping tool and make a copy of the desktop and save it to OneDrive (SkyDrive). 11. Create a local account on your computer with your name and sign out of the Microsoft account. Sign in using the local account you just created. 12. Return to the Microsoft store and download a calculator program. Are you able to download it with a local account? 13. Log back in with the Microsoft account. 14. Restart your Windows 8.1 computer (use the Power icon in the Settings pane) and follow the steps listed in the book on pages 6 to 8 (Applying Concepts). (Note: this refers to the book Supporting Windows 8 ) 15. Follow the steps listed in the book on page 11 (Applying Concepts). What are the options on the power icon menu? Page 2 of 10
16. Install Microsoft Office in your computer and pin a short cut to Microsoft Word on to the task bar and the Start Screen. 17. Create a Word document called resume.doc and save it into the Documents folder. 18. Return to the Windows 8.1 Start Screen and go to the Windows Store and install the Google search app. 19. Verify the app works and then uninstall the app. 20. Copy the file you created earlier (resume.doc) to OneDrive(SkyDrive). Read chapters 2 and 3 in the Windows 8 book and continue with the exercises. 21. Go to the Control Panel and click on Programs and Features and click on Turn Windows Features on or off and turn on the Hyper-V feature. 22. Create a new virtual machine following the steps in pages 58 63 in the book. Call the external switch Switch-1 Use Dynamic memory Use default hard drive settings Install Windows 7 VM using DVD or ISO Connect to VM Start the VM The following steps refer to the Windows 8.1 host operating system not the Windows 7 Virtual machine created in the last step. 23. What is the total amount of unallocated space on the Hard drive? (Check in the Disk Managment) 24. Create an E: drive from half of the remaining available space on your hard drive. 25. How much free space is on the C: drive partition? (check in the File Manager) 26. What is the total paging size for all drives? (Check in System Properties Advanced Tab) 27. 28. What is the total size of your Hard Drive? (Device Manager) 29. Turn the firewall back on and allow Media Center Extenders through the Firewall. 30. What is the total available graphics memory? Dedicated graphics memory? 31. Customize the Notification area (System tray). Hide the Network Notification icon. 32. Create the additional three local accounts (page 21 23) Jonathan Password=passwordj Pamela Password = passwordp Edward (Standard) Password= passworde 33. Now delete the Jonathan Account and his files. List the various steps necessary. 34. Use the Search utility to find the following programs and options: Windows Defender Windows Media Player Folder Option it displays 3 tabs, name them 35. Schedule Disk Cleanup to run daily at 9:00 AM, using the Task Scheduler. 36. Change the Wallpaper (Theme) on the Desktop to the Lines and Colors theme. 37. Set the Taskbar so that it auto hides and add the Desktop to the Taskbar using the Toolbars tab (Taskbar and Navigation Properties). Page 4 of 10
38. Display the CPU utilization in the Task Manager from the Performance tab and then stop the spooler service from the services tab. 39. Create a document using Microsoft Word with the following text: This is a text document that I created using Word in Windows 8.1 Then save it with the name newdoc.docx in Documents 40. Create another text document using WordPad This document has been created in WordPad The Copy and Paste the text from there to the file you created in Word to the Document folder and save as newdoc1.txt 41. Add an additional Library with your name; put the Documents folder in the new Library. 42. Set the Task bar so that it is no longer hidden. 43. From the Start Panel use the search utility to find the following files and write down their locations (right click the file and choose open file location and use that to determine the location of the file). Go to Devices and Printers in the Control Panel and Install the HP Color LaserJet 2550 PCL 6 and the HP LaserJet P4014/P4015 PCL 6 printers using the LPT 1 port. Page 5 of 10
