To begin, insert the media that came with your computer into your CD / DVD drive. While the media is in the computer, power the computer off and restart the system. Upon restart you will need to press and hold either the C or Option key to startup from the media. NOTE: The C key will automatically select the CD / DVD drive while the Option key will give you a horizontal menu of icons which you can select which item you want to use to startup the computer. 1. After the computer has finished starting up you should be prompted to pick a language to use for installing Mac OS X. Click one time on the appropriate language then click on the icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen 2. After clicking the icon the installer will startup. 3. After the installer has loaded you will see the initial Install Mac OS X welcome screen. In most instances you may click on the Continue button to proceed with the installation. 4. In the event that this is a new setup you might need to initialize your hard drive. To do so simply click on the Utilities menu located at the top of the screen and choose Disk Utility from the drop-down menu. 5. On the Disk Utility window click on the drive you wish to initialize located on the left-hand side of the screen. Once you ve selected the drive you wish to initialize click on the Partition tab. 6. On the Partition tab click on the option for Volume Scheme and select 1 Partition from the drop down menu. 7. In the Volume Information section please type in a name for the partition you d like to create, set the Format, and click the Apply button to verify your changes and begin the initialization. 8. On the confirmation window that appears click on the Partition button to begin the initialization. WARNING: This will erase ALL data on the drive so please be sure to backup your drive if you re doing this on an exisiting drive that has your data on it. 9. In the Disk Utility window the progress of the initialization will be displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen 10. Once Disk Utility reports that the status of Partition Complete click on the Disk Utility menu item in the top-left corner of the screen, and select Quit Disk Utility to exit the application. 11. To begin the Installation of Mac OS X click on the Continue button. 12. On the License Agreement screen that appears, click the Agree button to continue once you ve read Apple s license agreement. 13. On the Install Mac OS X screen you can add or remove components to your OS installation. Click on the Customize button to modify your installation settings. P a g e 5 Last Revised: 3.11.2011
14. On the Customize window you can click the checkboxes for any of the software that you wish to either install or remove. Apple has some items installed by default, as well as some that cannot be remove. You can also click on the disclosure triangles to the left of the entries to see subcomponents for each category. Once you ve made your changes click the OK button to continue. 15. The installation process for Mac OS X generally takes around 15 30 minutes depending upon the computer s hardware and resource. 16. Once the installation you will be notified that the installation succeeded and you will need to reinstall your software onto the computer. Click on the Continue button to finish the process. 17.
