Section 1 x10data SmartClient for Windows Mobile Device Installation x10data mobile device requirements 1. A Windows Mobile (WM) device. 2. Microsoft.NET Compact Framework v2.0 (CF2.0) and System Resource cab file installed on your WM device. (These can be downloaded and installed from the links shown later in this document.) 3. External Domain Name (EDN) of the x10data Application Platform (provided by your x10data Administrator or use www.x10data.com for a test drive) If you are installing the x10data SmartClient for Windows PC on the same machine that is hosting the x10data Application Platform (referred to as Standalone Mode ) then your EDN can be either of the following: the Static IP Address of the machine running the web service for x10data (from command, type IPCONFIG to determine, or see your Network Administrator for help) the computer name of the machine running the web service for x10data Prerequisite Installing the Compact Framework and System Resource files 1) Access the.net Server a) On your WM device, launch Internet Explorer (Tap the Windows-Start icon, or press the Windows-Key, then select Internet Explorer) b) Type in the URL to the x10data Application Platform s SmartClient Downloads page using the following syntax, replacing [EDN] with the actual External Domain Name: Page 3 of 11
http://[edn]/x10mobilesvc Example: http://www.x10data.com/x10mobilesvc or: http://machinename/x10mobilesvc 2) Select the appropriate Smart Client version. a) Tap the link SmartClient v6.5 3) Download the Compact Framework NOTE: If you already have CF2.0 installed on your device, then you may skip to step 3) below: Installing the CF2.0 System Resource Files. If CF2.0 is not installed (or if you are not sure), then follow these steps: a) Tap the link CF2.0 b) Tap the link for Windows Mobile 5.0 c) When prompted on the Download dialog, make sure that the checkbox Open file after download is checked, and then tap the Yes button. d) If your WM device has a memory-card installed, you will be prompted to select the installation location: Device or Storage Card. To ensure proper operation, the Compact Framework MUST be installed on the Device. e) Tap or click the Install smart key. After the installation has completed, you might be prompted to restart your device. If so, select Restart. 4) Installing the CF2.0 System Resource Files a) At the bottom of the Internet Explorer screen, tap the link: Return to SmartClient downloads b) Scroll to the bottom and tap the link Get System Resource Files c) Tap the link for Windows Mobile 5.0 d) When prompted on the Download dialog, make sure that the checkbox Open file after download is checked, and then tap the Yes button. e) If your WM device has a memory-card installed, you will be prompted to select the installation location: Device or Storage Card. To ensure proper operation, the System Resource Files MUST be installed on the Device. f) Tap or click the Install smart key. NOTE: If you have just finished installing CF2.0, then you have launched Internet Explorer and are accessing the correct URL. At the bottom of the Internet Explorer screen, tap the link: Return to SmartClient downloads and then continue with step 3) below: Download the SmartClient. a) On your WM device, launch Internet Explorer (Tap the Windows-Start icon, or press the Windows-Key, then select Internet Explorer) b) Type in the URL to the x10data Application Platform s SmartClient Downloads page using the following syntax, replacing [EDN] with the actual External Domain Name: http://[edn]/x10mobilesvc Example: http://www.x10data.com/x10mobilesvc or: http://machinename/x10mobilesvc 2) Select the appropriate Smart Client version. a) Tap the link SmartClient v6.5 3) Download the SmartClient a) Tap the link For Pocket PC b) When prompted on the Download dialog, make sure that the checkbox Open file after download is checked, and then tap the Yes button. c) If your WM device has a memory-card installed, you will be prompted to select the installation location: Device or Storage Card. NOTE: We recommend that you choose Device so that the files installed are always available. d) Tap or click the Install smart key. e) When the installation has completed, click the OK button. 4) Launch the SmartClient a) Select Start b) Select Programs c) Select the icon for x10data SmartClient d) The first time you run the x10data SmartClient, you will be prompted to enter some basic configuration information. When prompted, select OK. e) After a few moments, the x10data Config window is displayed. You will see a message in the status area at the bottom indicating that the configuration has been loaded. f) Replace www.x10data.com with the [EDN] that you entered in Step 1.b above. Then tap the Test URL button. g) Close the x10data Config program by selecting the Done smart key. When prompted to run the x10data SmartClient, select Yes. h) The x10data SmartClient launches, checks for any available updates, and then prompts you to Log In. 5) Log In a) At the Log On screen, enter the User ID, Password, and Account that you have been assigned by your x10data Administrator. b) Once logged in, refer to the x10data Pocket Guide for specific instructions on using x10data-powered applications. Exiting the x10data SmartClient 1) NOTE: The X button at the top-right corner does not close the application. Instead, it will minimize the x10data SmartClient. 2) To completely exit the x10data SmartClient, repeatedly click the Close (left) smart key until you are at the Main Menu. 3) Click File, and then Exit. If you do not see Exit in the list of items on the File menu, then click (More) to go to the next page. Page 6 of 11
Appendix A: Upgrading x10data Components x10data Smart Client The x10data SmartClient automatically updates itself whenever it detects a new version. Each time that the x10data SmartClient is launched, it checks the x10data Application Platform (URL is specified in the configuration file) to see if an update is available. If an update is available, the client prompts for download and installation. Page 7 of 11
Appendix B: Uninstalling x10data Components Windows Mobile Components Windows Mobile Professional NOTE: There is no need to remove the Microsoft.NET Compact Framework. To remove you x10data SmartClient, do the following: 1. From the Today screen: 2. Click Start and then select Settings. Page 8 of 11
3. Click the System tab, and then select Remove Programs. 4. Select x10data SmartClient and then Click Remove. 5. Select Yes Page 9 of 11
6. Select ok in the upper right-hand corner to close the Settings Remove Programs window. 7. Select the X in the upper right-hand corner to close the Settings window. 8. The x10data SmartClient has been removed. Page 10 of 11
Appendix C: Troubleshooting Program does not launch, Icon appears to do nothing Symptom: If both the x10data SmartClient and the x10data Config programs appear to do nothing when launched on a Windows Mobile device, the most likely cause is a corrupt or incomplete installation of the Compact Framework. Solution: Uninstall the Microsoft.NET Compact Framework (if installed), and then install the Microsoft.NET Compact Framework 2.0 (or later). Refer to the section Prerequisite Installing the Compact Framework and System Resource files earlier in this guide. Msg: Requires a newer version of the Microsoft.NET Compact Framework Symptom: If you see any of the following: Solution: Install the Microsoft.NET Compact Framework v2.0 (or later).
