GÉANT Services Supporting International Networking and Collaboration Karl Meyer December 2017
GÉANT Who we are and what we do To support collaboration and development amongst researchers, the dissemination of information & knowledge, and provide access to a portfolio of services and infrastructure resources: Coordinates and participates in EC-funded projects Under Horizon 2020 the financial instrument for implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness Operates a pan-european e-infrastructure GÉANT network Manages a portfolio of services for research & education eduroam, edugain, eduteams, InAcademia
Network The GÉANT network interconnects research, education and innovation communities worldwide, with secure, high-capacity networks. We design, plan, build and operate the large-scale, high-performance GÉANT network that connects European NRENs to each other and the rest of the world for sharing, accessing and processing the high data volumes generated by research and education communities and for testing innovative technologies and concepts. Interconnecting Europe s NRENs over a 500Gb highly-resilient pan-european backbone. NRENs serve 50 million users at 10,000 institutions across Europe. Network services: IP, Point-to-Point Services, VPN, Testbeds, performance monitoring
GÉANT Network Services Designed for R&E Ro bust - Over 1,000 terabytes o f data are transferred every day via the GÉANT IP backbone. Reliable - 100% average monthly access availability. Flexible - Services and infrastructure can be tailored to individual user requirements. Future Proof - 100Gbps (gigabits per second) services are now available across the core network, with capability to support up to 8Tbps (terabits per second). GÉANT IP GÉANT Lambda GÉANT VPN GÉANT Open Today it would not be possible to work without the network that GÉANT and the NRENs have provided. CMS experiment, Large Hadr on Collider (LHC)
Value Added Services Driving international collaboration Research and Education needs more than just networks Services supporting Trust & Identity and Collaborative engagement are crucial to support GÉANT TCS
eduroam Linking students to the global community Free secure Wifi provided by NRENs between campuses. A global network of users across 80 territories. More than 2 billion international authentications and counting A worldwide success story From its early beginnings as a joint venture between a few European universities to today with millions of users in more than 80 territories worldwide, eduroam has been an amazing success story and an example of research and education collaboration. www.eduroam.org
edugain - Securing Access to E-resources Enabling secure Single Sign On services to global research and educational resources Federated identities enable users to access a wide range of services using a single account sign-on managed by their 'home' institution Improves access Improves security Reduces management overhead and costs. edugain Voting only Candidate October 2017: 46 Federations active 6 Federations with voting rights in process of joining 3244 entities (50% growth)
Other Value Added Services GÉANT TCS Unlimited server certificates for R&E use Securing systems and services cost-effectively enabling enhanced collaboration edupert and PerfSONAR Monitoring and managing network and service performance
Why do we need Research and Education networks and NRENs? Why do we do this? To support and enable users not to profit from customers Developing services to meet needs not fitting customers into existing services
Supporting Users The users are key - Never forget this 100% user focus is essential Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities Life Sciences High-Energy Physics and Astronomy Earth Sciences and Observations Future Internet Projects E-Infrastructures
Supporting the Performing Arts - Royal Danish Music Academy Uses R&E networks to support distance learning Pan-continental lessons and auditions Enabled by investment and collaboration around the world
Bringing them together - LIGO and Virgo The 17 August identification of gravitational waves was a huge international collaboration 3500 scientists in five continents Multiple projects (gravity waves, radio and optical telescopes on earth and in space) all working together. Impossible without R&E networks and identity services
NRENs supporting The long tail of R&E Not everyone needs high performance networking - but everyone benefits from R&E services Networks and AAI are foundational services that support everyone New-comers Switching from local/individual to distributed research models New ways of sharing knowledge E-learning Digital libraries Innovative research tools
NRENs supporting The long tail of R&E Not all users are the same Until recently NRENs have focused on IT doers people who do IT for their role and their research Now we can focus on IT users people wo use IT to do other (cool) things. Our roles should be to support both
Thank You Karl Meyer December 2017
