A. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS A1. Safety instructions Please read and follow these safety instructions carefully. The manufacturer is not liable for personal or material damages if the safety instructions are not followed. If these safety instructions are not observed, the safety of the product is not guaranteed. Make sure these safety instructions are always available to any user. Avoid looking directly and for a long period of time to the fiber whenever the light ring is switched on (risk of ocular damage). The fiber should not be cut or disconnected from the control unit under any circumstances. In case of a fiber break, the laser source will automatically shut down. The power supply should then be unplugged and the product should be sent back to the customer service (see section D3 Guarantee & customer service). - - Do not obstruct the laser unit ventilation. This could lead to an overheating and to a damage of the product. 1
Safety instructions (cont.) The product must not be opened or dismantled under any circumstances. It is prohibited to make any technical changes to the product. Repairs are exclusively assigned to L.E.S.S. SA. This product is not adapted for a use in explosion-hazard areas and should only be used in the conditions listed under C1.7 General conditions of use. The product must not be powered by a power supply which has not been supplied by L.E.S.S. A full disconnection from the electrical network can only be made by unplugging the power supply. A2. Usage instructions The ShadowLESS product range for microscopy (BF/DF-5400/6400) has been developed for stereo-microscopy and macroscopy. These products are conceived to be used in industrial environments or in R&D laboratories. - - The product generates visible light of high intensity. In the case of inspection of components consisting of materials that absorb visible lignt, it is recommended to adjust the distance between the light ring and the observed sample in order to avoid thermal degradation of the lighted object. 2
A3. System overview A3.1. General overview BF-5400 & 6500 1 2 DF-5400 & 6500 1. Control unit : Allows to adjust the light intensity (further details at points 3, 4, and 5). 2. Light ring : Allows a uniform lighting on the working surface without heat dissipation. A3.2. Front view of the control unit 3 4 5 3. Potentiometer : Allows to adjust the light intensity of the light ring. 4. Power socket : Power supply 9 [Vdc]. 5. Power switch : Allows to switch the light ring on or off. 3
B. OPERATING B1. Mounting and connecting B1.1. Connecting the control unit to the power supply Insert the 9 [Vdc] plug into the control unit socket (4). Plug the power supply to an electrical outlet (220 [Vac]). Warning: It is recommended to only use the optional power supply supplied by L.E.S.S. The use of any other power supply cancels the manufacturer guarantee. B1.2. Commissioning Before switching the light on and in order to avoid the user dazzle, make sure the potentiometer is adjusted on low intensity (see B.1.3 Regulating light intensity ). By pressing on the part of the switch (5) closer to the power plug (4), the lamp switches on (ON). To switch it off, press on the opposite part of the switch (OFF). 4 5 ON OFF Warning: To disconnect the light ring from the electrical network, unplug the power supply. B1.3. Regulating light intensity By turning the potentiometer (3) towards the opposite direction of the power socket (4), the light intensity increases progressively. In order to know which intensity to select before switching the light on, the wheel of the potentiometer is calibrated from 1 to 5. 3 4 Warning: When the regulator is turned towards the lowest power, it doesn t mean that the lamp is switched off. The lamp is only switched off when the switch is on the OFF position. 4
B2. Accessories The following optional accessories can be ordered to enhance the usage of the product. B2.1. Brightfield (BF) and Darkfield (DF) Power supply Available with European (EU), Japanese (JP) or British (UK) interfaces, it enables to supply the lamp with power via the electrical network. Ring adapter Available with several inner rings, it makes the illumination systems compatible with microscope objectives from 50 to 66 [mm]. Base system It allows to fix the different systems (bright- and darkfield) in a compact manner either directly on the microscope or on the workstation. B2.2. Brightfield BF-5400 & BF-6500 Diffuser BF standard Delivers smoother image when observing reflective components under high angle illumination. It can be attached and removed quickly. Diffuser BF large Delivers smoother image when observing very reflective components under high angle illumination. It can be attached and removed quickly. B2.3. Darkfield DF-5400 & DF-6500 - - Combo post It allows to adjust the height of the low angle ring light. It facilitates the precise inspection of samples at different heights ranging from 0 to 50 [mm]. 5
B3. Assembly of accessories While mounting the system, avoid tightening the screws too hard in order not to damage the screw thread or distort the objective of the microscope. Regarding the connection of the system to the electrical network, please refer to B.1. Mounting and connecting. B3.1. Brightfield BF-5400 & BF-6500 Mikroskop Assembling the ring adapter to the microscope: Insert the ring adapter around the objective of the microscope with the white clamping blocks upwards and screw the lateral black clamping screws until the adapter is stabilised. Assembling the light ring to the adapter: Insert the light ring in the adapter and stabilise it with the silver lateral clamping screw of the adapter. - - Assembling of the diffuser on the light ring: Insert the diffuser under the light ring and attach it with the lateral clamping screw of the diffuser. 6
The ShadowLESS DF-5400/6500 offers the possibility to adjust the height of the light ring, weather with respect to the objective of the microscope or with respect of the base of the microscope. B3.2. Darkfield DF-5400 & DF-6500 Mikroskop Assembling the DF ring with respect to the objective of the microscope: 1. As a first step, screw the long axe of the combo post to the threaded hole in the corner of the ring frame. 2. Then, screw the small axe of the combo post to the threaded hole in the ring adapter (at the opposite of the silver clamping screw). 2. 3. 3. Insert the ring adapter around the objective of the microscope with the white clamping blocks upwards and screw the lateral black clamping screws until the adapter is stabilised. 1. Setting the DF ring with respect to the base of the microscope : Screw the 3 adjusting screws in the holes in the frame of the light ring; positions are marked with dots on the diagram. Then, position the light ring on the base of the microscope and use the 3 screws to adjust the height and angle of the light ring. Base of the microscope 7
