Now from Symantec ENTERPRISE VAULT 6.0 THE ENTERPRISE ARCHIVING PLATFORM Veritas Enterprise Vault is the platform of choice for the long-term retention and management of information. Through a focus on security, scalability and usability within the context of a broad archiving framework, we have been able to achieve market leadership in the archiving space and to deliver significant value to our customers. Gartner recognized this fact when it listed Enterprise Vault as the only product in the Leadership quadrant of the Email Active Archiving Market for two years in a row. With the release of Enterprise Vault 6 in July 2005, we are extending our vision for an integrated and intelligent approach to archiving, through broader support for archiving content, more control over what information is archived and how it is used and improved integration into the existing storage environment. Table 1 The evolution of Enterprise Vault In this document, we summarize some of the key new capabilities in Enterprise Vault 6.0. NOW ALL OF YOUR MESSAGING AND MORE With Enterprise Vault 6.0, we are continuing to expand the types of content customers can archive, allowing them to design an integrated strategy toward content archiving. 4

Now fom Symantec Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Support Enterprise Vault 6.0 now supports Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003. SharePoint shares many of the storage resource issues experienced by Microsoft Windows servers and Microsoft Exchange when storing large amounts of historic data. Since SharePoint offers the ability to store not only the recent version of the document but also the version history, an even higher percentage of the total storage volume can be considered historic, creating a prime opportunity for archiving. Enterprise Vault 6.0 allows administrators to define policies around pruning and archiving old versions of documents, while maintaining a seamless experience for end-users. SharePoint users access old archived versions and search archived documents directly from SharePoint, via an add-in Web part. At the same time, archived SharePoint documents are compressed, single instance stored, indexed and viewable through search and Archive Explorer like all Enterprise Vault content. As with Microsoft Exchange, there is another major driver for archiving content from SharePoint with Enterprise Vault. By creating a centralized archive of all types of information, organizations are better able to manage risk around information retention and regulatory compliance. As with Microsoft Exchange and file systems, administrators are able to define retention categories for items archived from SharePoint. Lotus Domino Journaling Support With Enterprise Vault 6.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1), we are adding support for journaling of Lotus Domino email. Lotus Domino is the other major corporate messaging platform after Microsoft Exchange and Domino customers have similar needs for retention, destruction, supervision and discovery. With Lotus Domino journaling, we are able to archive all email coming in through Lotus Domino (with no user intervention), efficiently store that email (including compression), manage retention for archived email and index that email for supervision and discovery purposes. SMTP Message Capture Some customers with requirements around message capture, retention, discovery and/or supervision are required to not only archive journaled email on the corporate messaging system (e.g., Microsoft Exchange), but also to capture messages from other sources of email in the enterprise systems like antispam appliances, Web servers sending messages to customers or CRM applications. With Enterprise Vault 6.0, customers can easily forward any email via SMTP to an SMTP receiver on the Enterprise Vault server, allowing email to be archived without going through the 5

Now from Symantec Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino server. Customers then get the same benefits around storage, retention, indexing, discovery and supervision that they get for corporate messaging systems. Advanced PST Discovery and Migration With Enterprise Vault 5, we were able to migrate Microsoft Outlook PST files (offline archives) into the Enterprise Vault archive. Many customers used this functionality to remove the problem of PST file management (e.g., corruption issues, backup issues, risk, etc.) and centralize critical email messages. However, one challenge many customers reported was actually finding the PST files to begin with. Users often store PST files in many places from laptops and desktops to network shares. Enterprise Vault 6.0 comes with a completely new PST migration process. An automated search process locates PST files on network shares and client machines. Enterprise Vault attempts to automatically determine (based upon Outlook profile or network share / folder permission information) who owns each PST file and to which archive they should be migrated. From there, the files are automatically collected and migrated, with administrator options on issues like whether to delete the PST file after the migration. This process is now visible to the administrator with the introduction of a centralized view of where all PST files are located, basic information about them (ownership size, etc.) and status on the overall migration. Location (K) User \\ukpco1\c$\profile1 103 JoeB PST HKEY Current User 453 MarkH Enterprise Vault \\uksrv03\usershare1\ 987 JuileP PST Table 2 Centralized view on PST management This level of information alone will give increased benefit to any organization; but the improvements in the overall process don t stop there. Enterprise Vault 6.0 now gives the organization the choice of a client side push or a server side pull strategy. This means that companies will now have the choice of deciding if they want 6

Now fom Symantec the lower cost option of a server side pull migration or the faster option of a client side push migration. The entire process is totally scriptable and customers have the choice of how users will interact with the newly migrated information. This could be placing shortcuts into the mailbox to newly archived items or using Archive Explorer and having no shortcuts. Veritas Enterprise Vault Software Developers Kit To continue to expand the amount of data that can be archived in Enterprise Vault, we ve introduced a Software Developers Kit (SDK) and Partner Program to allow partners to interface with Enterprise Vault Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). Through partners using this SDK, Enterprise Vault is now going to be able to archive additional sources of content such as database records, SAP data and document management systems, as well as existing support for partners capturing instant messages. Other APIs allow for custom filtering, search and mailbox provisioning. TAP YOUR CORPORATE MEMORY Traditionally, archiving systems have had document full text indexing at their core. Full text indexing and its associated benefits around data mining for legal purposes or otherwise have provided great value to customers. However, in addition to full text indexing and search, customers have asked for the ability to tag archived content with metadata and to use this metadata for smarter retention (e.g., how long to retain items based upon content type) and retrieval (e.g., search by logical category). A good example of document categorization would be a legal company that groups or categorizes documents according to the case or customer they referenced. These groupings in legal companies are called matters. If you wanted to see all information regarding a matter, you would want to ensure that all data categorized as belonging to that matter, be presented, regardless of its origin (e.g., email, fax or even photograph). Furthermore, different matters might be retained for different periods of time. Enterprise Vault 6.0 introduces filter rules to easily make archiving decisions on email as it is archived and content categories to logically identify archived content and define rules around retention. Filter rules specifically are XML files that define, based upon message properties such as subject, sender and recipient, whether to archive an item and what content category to map it to. Content categories are also XML files that then define a specific retention category for a type of content, as well as the vault to which the category s items should be archived. 7

Now from Symantec PLATFORM OF CHOICE Scalable Administration for Hosting Providers and Enterprises How can a Formula One racing team help me and my car? Many motorists benefit from technologies developed and proven in advanced motor sport even though they will never stress their vehicles in a similar way. The same is true for the work that Enterprise Vault has done in becoming the application of choice for the hosting market. Stress testing many of the features in these advanced environments and ensuring the increases in operational efficiency benefit everyone. The granular, open and flexible security model that Enterprise Vault offers means that customers are able to secure every item in the vault and maintain this security overtime. A hosting partner can go one stage further with Enterprise Vault 6.0 through multi-tenanting, meaning more than one organization can securely be held in a single Enterprise Vault system. Furthermore, archiving policies can now be defined at an organizational unit level, allowing for separate policies between customers or business units. To enhance scalability for hosting providers and enterprises, we are introducing a task based service infrastructure for Enterprise Vault. The system uses far fewer Windows services than previous versions, reducing resource requirements for archiving. Instead of having one service for each Exchange server to be archived or journaled, one service can now run multiple tasks that archive separate archive targets. Finally, we have significantly simplified administration for Enterprise Vault. Hosting providers can automate the enablement of mailboxes from scripts and we also publish APIs for calling Enterprise Vault Policy Manager scripts. Furthermore, the Vault Administrator Client now allows customers to perform common tasks without as many manual registry configurations. And customers can now monitor Enterprise Vault through Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), via a MOM Management Pack which raises alerts based upon rules. The alerts even contain Enterprise Vault Knowledge Base information, allowing for faster problem resolution. Secondary Migration Using Veritas NetBackup With the acquisition of KVS by Symantec, we plan to leverage capabilities across backup and archiving to provide integrated data management for our customers. As a first step toward this vision, Enterprise Vault 6.0 allows customers using Veritas NetBackup 5.1 or higher to automatically define policies for migrating collections of archived items to tape or other media managed by NetBackup from the Enterprise Vault disk archive. In this way, customers can reduce the total cost of ownership for archiving through tiered storage. 8

Now fom Symantec Administrators can define policies regarding how long after an item is archived should it be migrated. When end-users recall items that have been migrated to NetBackup, Enterprise Vault automatically restores the data from NetBackup and returns it to the end-users. If the media is not available, Enterprise Vault will display a message to the user indicating that they should check back later. Support for IBM TotalStorage DR 550 Symantec is committed to providing customers a wide range of choice in storage platforms. To this end, in addition to broad support for storage that can be viewed by Windows file systems and our specific integration with EMC Centera and NetApp NearStore with SnapLock, we are adding support for IBM s latest archiving platform, the IBM TotalStorage DR 550. The DR 550 provides high-performance archiving in a cost-effective profile, allowing for multiple tiers of archive storage. Support for Optical Storage As customers implement tiered storage archiving visions, they are beginning to examine data storage alternatives beyond disk. With the integration of Enterprise Vault 6.0 and NetBackup, we are able to deliver on a vision of a tape tier for data. Through a new integration with Pegasus Software, we are further able to provide support for optical storage media, including the Plasmon UDO technology. This allows customers to choose from a wide range of archiving strategies based upon price/performance tradeoffs. Enhanced Support for EMC Centera Enterprise Vault has always been a leading archiving platform in leveraging features from the EMC Centera archiving platform. In Enterprise Vault 6.0, we are able to use Application Authentication against the Centera, map Enterprise Vault retention categories to EMC Centera retention classes and perform faster item expiry. All of these capabilities allow us to continue to provide the best archiving experience on the EMC Centera platform. SUMMARY Enterprise Vault 6.0 is a major release in the history of the product line. With this release, we ve delivered significant value to existing customers, created new opportunities for customers to use Enterprise Vault and continued our push toward a vision of a truly intelligent archiving platform. 9
