Consumer Protection Instilling confidence across global supply chains In our increasingly commoditised, connected world, consumers are choosing to trust brands that are dedicated to realising a greater quality and safety objective that goes well beyond just meeting standards. As the world-leading provider of quality, safety and sustainability, we have been in the business of protecting consumers from technology-related risks since 1866. Chemical safety TÜV SÜD partnered with Geox to achieve full chemical safety certification in less than two years, certifying its entire product line of more than 6,000 models according to the TÜV SÜD Footwear Mark. To ensure chemical safety, over 2 million tests and inspections will be conducted annually. Food safety TÜV SÜD provided certification and auditing services to help Meiji achieve a GFSI benchmarked food safety standard, increasing the marketability of its confectionary products and enabling international access to new distribution channels in the U.S. Smart healthcare TÜV SÜD s Smart Elderly Care @ Home Centre creates a living platform to testbed the safety, security, reliability and interoperability of smart healthcare solutions, which aims to empower patients and stakeholders with greater autonomy over their healthcare treatments. Vehicle safety nationwide TÜV SÜD ATISAE operates a network of 35 service centres throughout Spain, where periodic technical inspections and emissions testing are undertaken to ensure vehicle safety and environmental protection. In 2015, over 1.3 million vehicle inspections were carried out. 8

Industry 4.0 is creating intelligent networks by enabling interconnected components, machines and systems to communicate autonomously. For the experts at TÜV SÜD, the future is already here. Infrastructure security In an eight-month honeynet project, TÜV SÜD simulated the critical infrastructure of a municipal waterworks network. Our IT Security experts detected and analysed a total of 60,000 unwanted accesses from over 150 countries and a handful of attacks. Realising Industrie 4.0 transformation To drive industry-wide transformation, we developed the Smart Industry Readiness Index with Singapore Economic Development Board. The Index evaluates current state of manufacturing facilities, offering a structured and holistic approach to start, sustain and scale transformation efforts. Secure online transactions TÜV SÜD s S@fer Shopping Certification has given Expedia a clear advantage in the competitive online travel category. In addition to closing the trust gap between Expedia and its customers, the S@fer Shopping Certification process provides a data security framework for Expedia websites worldwide. Smart manufacturing TÜV SÜD is part of a SmartFactory KL initiative to develop new concepts, standards and solutions for the intelligent factory of the future. We have launched a modular certification scheme for flexible plant structures to facilitate set-up and operation of smart production facilities. 9
Sustainable Development Managing growth for the good of all Our wants are infinite. Unfortunately, our resources are not. Current projections put the world s population at 9.6 billion by 2050. Our ability to meet the needs of tomorrow comes down to the decisions we make today. Decentralised sanitation technologies To bring safe and sustainable sanitation to 2.5 billion people in developing countries, TÜV SÜD is partnering the Gates Foundation to develop a technical standard for off-grid community-scale sanitation technologies. Energy efficiency To support the BMW Group s ambitious targets for economical energy use, the energy efficiency analyses we undertook at its manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, South Africa, identified 28 potential areas for energy savings that were organised in a catalogue of proposed actions. Offshore wind energy From monitoring of manufacturing, transport, erection / installation and commissioning of the entire offshore wind farm to operational release approval from the responsible German authority, our experts ensured that all components conform to given requirements in order to mitigate operational risk in the certification of a new offshore wind farm, Nordsee One. Safety of recycled e-vehicles To uncover potential risks of recycling e-vehicles following seawater immersion, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration engaged our experts to develop test procedures and appropriate safety criteria for use in developing suitable safety standards. 10
Urbanisation Solving complex challenges for growing cities The world s urban population is on the rise. For the first time in history, more of us live in cities than rural areas. Cities present immense challenges in terms of energy, water, housing, safety and transportation. With decades of experience in automotive, rail, safety and security solutions, we are uniquely placed to help solve the challenges of our urban future. Autonomous vehicles To propel the use of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) in urban conditions, we are developing standards, testing and approval methodologies for the Centre of Excellence for Testing & Research of AVs NTU (CETRAN), an initiative with the Singapore Government and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Public transportation Our rail safety experts are ensuring Hong Kong s commuters arrive safely and on time by performing Independent Safety Assessments of the MTR s new eight-car metro train sets C-type, focussing on safety-related subsystems such as interfaces including train-borne signalling equipment. Smart cities Building on the Morgenstadt (City of the Future) Initiative and the Triangulum European lighthouse project, we developed a smart city assessment checklist to measure how smart a city is and prepare an action plan for improvements. Social housing More than 42,000 low-income families now have a place to call home under a public housing programme in São Paulo, Brazil, in which we provided project management and construction supervision services. 11

A heritage of business success From the age of steam engines to today s hyper-connected world, our society has been shaped by three major technological revolutions. TÜV SÜD s story began with the first, when steam boilers were the innovative new technology powering the Industrial Revolution. Following a devastating explosion that claimed one life and injured many, the first steam boiler inspection association was formed in Mannheim in 1866. This association gave rise to an enduring legacy and marked the beginning of technical safety in Germany. In the years and decades that followed, similar organisations, collectively known as TÜVs (Technical Inspection Association in English), sprang up across Germany. By the 1990s, different TÜVs were operating throughout every state in Germany. Over time, the TÜVs from the southern states came together to form TÜV SÜD. Today, TÜV SÜD is the largest TÜV in the world in terms of revenue, network and the number of experts it employs. 1866 On 6 January, 22 industrialists united to establish the Steam Boiler Inspection Association Baden in Mannheim. 1906 Our first vehicle periodic technical inspection was carried out. 1938 The launch of a standardised nationwide system created 14 regional inspection associations named TÜV. There were 17 TÜVs by 1941. 1881 The first binding standards related to boiler safety were agreed, paving the way for uniform technical inspections. 1921 Environmental advocacy began with our publication of a report addressing dust pollution. 1951 TÜV organisations were tasked with performing regular inspections of all motorised vehicles. 14
1964 Expansion beyond Europe began with a cable car accident investigation in Cape Town, South Africa. 1991 Asian subsidiaries launched in Hong Kong then Japan, Taiwan and China, with North American subsidiaries set up around the same time. 2006 Singapore s PSB Group is acquired, with TÜVTÜRK launched the following year. 1989 TÜV Product Service GmbH was launched, pioneering the concept of worldwide approvals. 1996 The TÜVs from Germany s southern states united to form TÜV SÜD. Today Footprint in Spain expanded with acquisition of ATISAE, and launched 2 Digital Service Centres of Excellence in Singapore and Germany. 15
