How Do I Get Respondus on my Computer? Respondus Request access on your personal or university-owned computer. Put in a ticket to customer service to install the software on your computer. Accessing Respondus Once Respondus is installed, a Respondus icon will show up on the desktop. Double click it to open Respondus. If using Respondus for the first time, or after renewing your subscription for the year, you will need to establish your server. To do this go to Create. Type in the Name of File and Description. Navigate to the Preview & Publish tab in order to establish your server settings. Click Publish Wizard under the Publish to Blackboard option. Add a new server using the drop down option. Choose Server: Blackboard at Purdue University-WL. Click OK. Complete steps 1-3 and press Next. NOTE: You may choose to save your Username and Password. Click the Retrieval & Reports tab on the top and click the Retrieve Questions sub-tab on the left-hand side. Then select Retrieve Questions. Make sure the BbLearn Server is selected and press Next. Office of Instructional Technology www.pnw.edu/oit Page 6
Choose a course from which you want to copy a test. Select an Exam, Survey, or Pool. Click Next. Enter a name for the test. Select Next. Note: This is not what the quiz will be called in Blackboard Learn. You will set that name later. This name is for a locally-stored file Respondus is creating. After a moment, you will receive confirmation that the file saved. Click OK. The screen should indicate that it completed successfully. Select Finish. Importing Tests to Blackboard using a Word Document Respondus will import multiple choice, true/false, essay; fill in the blank, and multiple answer questions. The plain text, rich-text, or MS Word file must be organized in a Standard Format before it can be imported into Respondus. Multiple Choice Questions Required elements to be included as the Standard Format for multiple choice questions: 1. Each question must begin with a question number, followed by either a period. or a parentheses ). 2. The question wording must follow the question number with one space between. 3. Each answer must begin with a letter (A-T) followed by a period. or a parentheses ). 4. Correct answer is indicated by placing an asterisk (*) directly in front of the answer choice. The process of creating true or false questions is similar to that used for creating multiple choice questions (see above). 2. It s important to note that the True answer choice must be listed prior to the False answer choice in order for Respondus to recognize it as a true or false question type. Example: 3. The first line of the formatting must begin with Type: MA. 2. The rest of the process is similar to that used for creating multiple choice questions (see above). Example: Type: MA 3. The first link of formatting must begin with Type: MT. 2. It is followed by the question number and the question wording. 3. Each answer (which consists of both parts of a correct match) must begin with a letter (a-t) followed by a period. or a parentheses ). 4. The two parts of the match must be separated with an = symbol. Example: Type: MT 4. Match the correct name to the discovery or theory. a. Michelson-Morely = Speed of light b. Create a new document Name and then Preview the file to confirm the questions are correct are there are no Warnings, indicating missing components, to be found. Select Finish when you are done previewing and making changes. Note: This will be the name given to the test/quiz in Blackboard Learn. The File Saved screen should display. Click OK. The Edit tab should then populate with your test and questions. You can modify your test point values, add/remove, and reorder questions from this tab by choosing any of the options from the drop down option on the screen. Office of Instructional Technology www.pnw.edu/oit Page 13
Go to the Settings tab and Availability and Other Settings, to set the test parameters including: time limits, grading options, attempt numbers, due date, and question presentation. Then choose the Preview & Publish tab to preview your file and verify it is up to your standards. To Preview, select the Preview the File option. Choose Publish to Blackboard and select the Publish Wizard. Decide the Type of Publish for your test and press Next. Office of Instructional Technology www.pnw.edu/oit Page 15
Set your options for the test, and click Next when finished. Designate a Content Area for the test to be placed and choose Next. Office of Instructional Technology www.pnw.edu/oit Page 16
Select Finish when test has been uploaded successfully. You should now see your Respondus Test in Blackboard in the designated folder you assigned it. Import Tests to Blackboard using Publish Content Choose the Start tab and select the Test Bank Network option. If you do not have a file code and password for your textbook, then you will need to search for your test bank. Click Next. Press Next again. Choose your textbook from the options and select the More Information & Test Bank Request link. You will need to fill in the Institution Information and Contact Information for verification and processing with the publisher. When you receive your file code and password from your email, select the Register a test bank using a file code and password and press Next. Press Continue and then choose the option of selecting questions from the publisher s test bank and press Next. Select Create a new file or Open an existing file and press Next. If creating a new file, provide a name and description. Then choose the test bank from the drop down list. Office of Instructional Technology www.pnw.edu/oit Page 21
Indicate the Chapter or File from the test bank options. All test questions will be displayed from the Chapter. Check the boxes for the questions you would like to use for your assessment and select Insert into List. Questions should then be copied into a Respondus File and can be previewed, modified, or reordered. Click Finish when done and Publish to your Blackboard course.
