BUYING CAMERA LENSES LENS BUYING GUIDE for DSLR & Mirrorless Digital Cameras - 2018 Fall Edition - Copyright 2018 Easy Photo Class All Rights Reserved
DSLR & Mirrorless Camera Lens Recommendations We want to help you choose the best lenses for your digital camera for you to take great photographs. Choosing lenses can be confusing because different image sensor give you different views with the same lens. Full Frame, APS-C and Four Thirds The 3 basic image sensor sizes for DSLR and Mirrorless cameras are Full Frame, APS-C and Four Thirds. A lens on a camera with a full frame image sensor will be the mm on the lens. The same lens will give you a 1.5x magnified view on a digital camera with an APS-C camera and a 2x magnified view on a digital camera with a Four Thirds image sensor. We explain this in depth visually in our Lens Buying video. Watch Our Secrets of Buying a DSLR or Mirrorless and Lens Buying Videos To learn the different lenses that fit different size image sensors for these cameras you can watch our Secrets of Buying Camera Lenses video. To understand more about how DSLR and Mirrorless cameras work you can check out our Secrets of Buying a Digital SLR or Mirrorless Camera video. If you would like to see if you may want to buy a Point & Shoot camera instead you can watch our Secrets of Buying a Point & Shoot Camera video. Less Wide View with APS-C lens on Camera with Full Frame Image Sensor If you put an All In One lens on a camera that is made for an APS-C camera it won t zoom to as wide angle view as it would on a Full Frame Camera. That is why we have made pages in this guide for Full Frame lenses and APS-C Lenses as well as Four Thirds lenses. Camera Body + Lens is Generally Less Expensive In our DSLR and Mirrorless Camera Buying Guide we have links to camera body plus lens combinations that are usually less expensive than buying the camera body and lens separately. Camera Body and Lens Choices When you buy a new digital camera you can get a basic lens, two lens set or All In One lens. Watching the Lens Buying Video you will see that I recommend buying an All In One Lens if you can afford it. It generally costs less if you can get it in a camera body and All In One lens package. Some lenses cost more and are usually a larger opening lens or possibly the pro model of that lens. APS-C lenses are x 1.5 and Four Thirds lenses are x 2 for the focal length and view.
One Lens, Two Lens Set or All In One Lens One of the favorite tips that I give people attending my workshops is the idea of an All In One Lens that zooms from wide angle to long telephoto. Often people with buy a camera with a wide angle to short telephoto lens that doesn t zoom out very far and is disappointing. Buying a camera with a two lens set gets you the same wide angle to short telephoto and then a short telephoto to long telephoto lens in a two lens set. This can help save money but is inconvenient because you always have the long lens on when you want to take a wide shot or the wide lens on when you want to zoom long. You also have to carry both lenses and can get dust on the image sensor when changing them. An All In One lens zooms from wide angle to long telephoto covering the range of the two lens set. You only carry the lens on your camera and don t have to worry about changing lenses. Some All In One lenses zoom longer than others. Large Opening Lens to Help Blur the Background One of the favorite combinations is an All In One lens with a large opening lens. You can buy zoom lenses with large lens openings but they are usually thousands of dollars. A more economical way is to buy a large opening lens that is a prime lens which generally costs a lot less. In this lens buying guide we are concentrating on giving you links to All In One lenses and large opening prime lenses which don t zoom but have a large opening to help you blur the background and take photos in low light. We also show 1.4 and 1.8 versions of a lens for you to consider for cost savings.
