It describes the system requirements, provides additional product information, and explains known problems with the product. This document should be used in conjunction with the MapMarker 10.0 User Guide. System Requirements MapMarker is a 32-bit program for Windows 2000 with SP4, Windows XP Professional with SP1, and Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition. You must have Internet Explore 5.0 or later with SP2 installed or the MDAC installer does not run properly. The minimum system requirements are a 90 Mhz Pentium processor or equivalent with a minimum of 32 MB RAM. The MapMarker software requires about 25 MB of available hard drive space. The complete Address Dictionary, which comprises the data files and init files, requires approximately 1.41 GB of storage space. For a list of file sizes by state, see Address Dictionary File Sizes by State on page 4.
System Recommendations Please note the following recommendations to maximize the performance of your MapMarker installation. Storing Data on Your Hard Drive To maximize MapMarker s performance, we recommend that the Address Dictionary data be stored on a hard drive. The data resides in the data directory under the MapMarker program directory (default is c:\program Files\MapInfo\MapMarker\data). If space is limited, you can create subsets of the most frequently accessed data and copy them to your hard drive. See Creating Data Subsets in the MapMarker 10.0 User Guide. Using Data from CD-ROM If you use the data directly from CD-ROM, we recommend that you configure a disk cache to improve performance. Refer to your disk caching software documentation for instructions. Performance Tuning To get the most out of MapMarker s geocoding capabilities, consider these tips for optimizing your system. Use the fastest processor available to you. Have enough memory so that the operating system can allocate some memory to your disk cache. Copy the Address Dictionary to your hard drive. Sort your table by ZIP Code. Do not create points automatically. Installing MapMarker Installing Data If the user chooses not to install any of the licensed data, MapMarker will not be usable. Install at least one state or choose to Run from CD. MapMarker Server If a MapMarker Server is running, the upgrade installer will shut down the service and replace it. The user will have to re-start the service. 2005 MapInfo Corporation. All rights reserved. 2 filename.pdf
Locked Files If the installer encounters a file that is locked (for example during an upgrade), it may roll back the installation unexpectedly without displaying a message. The Finish button will display, but MapMarker will not have been installed. If this occurs, re-boot and try again. Shared Installations If you are sharing an installation of MapMarker with users across a network, your users must be able to access the MapMarker program directory and the data. You must specify a shared folder name during the installation in the Provide shared folder information dialog to provide this accessibility. Using a shared folder name enables the clients on your network to access the MapMarker program directory and data using the same path. To specify a shared folder name, you must provide the name of the computer that is hosting the application and the name of the publicly shared folder. The path must be in this format: \\<computer name>\<shared folder name> The shared folder name must appear immediately following the computer name. For example, a valid entry for the shared folder name might look like either of the following: \\ComputerName\SHARED_DATA_FOLDER \\ComputerName\SHARED_MAPMARKER_FOLDER\Data In both these paths, the shared folder name immediately follows the computer name. In this entry: \\ComputerName\MapMarker\SHARED_DATA_FOLDER the path is invalid because the shared folder name does not immediately follow the computer name. To specify more than one data location, you must separate each location in the path with a semicolon. For example, if you install the MapMarker program to the C: drive and install the data files to the D: drive, your shared folder path would look like this: \\ComputerName\SHARED_MAPMARKER_FOLDER;\\ComputerName\SHARED_DATA _FOLDER Upgrading to MapMarker 10.0 Upgrading to MapMarker 10.0 from MapMarker 9.x does not require a new serial number or unlocking code as long as you purchased the same data with 10.0 as you did for 9.x. The installer will not overwrite your current version. Instead, it will ask you to select a different location for version 10.0. You will not be able to overwrite an existing installation of MapMarker software or data. Start the install program by running LAUNCH.EXE from CD 1 of 3. The MapMarker Installation Options screen directs you to install the product. 2005 MapInfo Corporation. All rights reserved. 3 filename.pdf

Address Dictionary Update The January 2005 edition of the MapMarker Standard Address Dictionary is generated from the following sources: Address data from the USPS ZIP+4 database (vintage December 2004). Street geometry is created from Tiger 2002. ZIP+4 Centroids from GDT (vintage October 2004). The Address Dictionary is updated annually. Address Dictionary File Sizes by State The following table shows the approximate file size by state for the MapMarker Address Dictionary. The file size for each state is the total of the.adr/.adx pairs of 2-digit ZIP Code files and the centroid file (.cen). The file naming convention is as follows: ssxxplus.adr, and ssxxplus.adx where ss is the state abbreviation and xx is the 2-digit ZIP Code (e.g., ny01plus.adr, ny01plus.adx) ssz9.cen where ss equals the state abbreviation (e.g., nyz9.cen) The CD number column represents the location of the state data on the product CDs. To create subsets of the Address Dictionary on your hard drive, see the section on Creating Data Subsets in the Installation chapter of the MapMarker User Guide. Known Issues Installing to a Novell Server Because of a Windows system limitation, you cannot install MapMarker to a Novell server from a Windows 2000 machine with SP4. When you do so, the MapMarker installation reports an error writing to the shared directory. To work around the problem, perform the installation from either a Windows XP SP1, Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition, or Windows 2000 SP3 machine. You will only need to do this once if you are doing a shared installation to the Novell server. Once MapMarker is installed to the Novell server, client machines will be able to install from the shared installation. Microsoft is aware of the issue and will be releasing a fix in their next service pack. In the meantime, an immediate fix is available from their Knowledge Base. Go to the following Microsoft support page: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=824424 This URL points to a Microsoft Knowledge Base article that identifies the same issue with Windows 2000 SP4 machines when trying to install an MS Office file to a Netware server. The Hotfix information in the article provides a link to the fix. We have tested the fix against the installation scenario in MapMarker that produces the error, and it resolves the problem. MapX Location for Shared Installations Please note that when you perform a shared installation the client installer always installs MapX to the system Program Files folder, in the directory: Program Files\MapInfo\MapMarker MapX The client installer does not prompt you for a MapX location. MapX v. 4.0 The MapMarker installer will disable an installation of MapX 4.0. To work around the problem, you must either re-install MapX 4.0, or upgrade MapX to a more recent version. ASP Applications ASP applications do not work if you are using Windows XP SP2. MapMarker does not support Windows XP SP2. 2005 MapInfo Corporation. All rights reserved. 6 filename.pdf
