Executive summary Healthcare professionals rely on up-to-date technology to consistently deliver top-quality care. Mobile devices represent a big piece of that technology. They are a staple in today s healthcare delivery system, sitting at the center of every clinician s organizational workflow. They provide access to each patient s medical and drug history, lab work, scans and all the other custom information needed to make the best care decisions for each patient. To learn how healthcare workers get the most from their mobile devices and to discover their perspectives on their continued mobility challenges and priorities, Fujitsu and TechValidate conducted a survey of more than 50 healthcare professionals in North America. Their insights are captured in this E-Book, created to help you understand the importance of selecting the right devices for your organization and to learn how best to do so. Also presented in these pages is the data gathered on how Fujitsu has helped the professionals surveyed do their jobs better and improve patient care. Intel Core i7 vpro processor 3

Survey methodology Mobility is an important aspect of healthcare. The survey included questions about healthcare professional's experiences with using mobility devices to optimize their workflows. Another objective was to learn how caregivers use the devices to solve their biggest challenges and to discover where Fujitsu solutions made the biggest impact in helping them meet their care-giving goals. The survey respondents were all Fujitsu customers who not only used the products, but used Fujitsu as their healthcare IT provider as well. 45 percent described their healthcare environments as enterprise healthcare, while the remainder said they worked in home health, physician practices, or social services environments. By presenting these findings, we hope to help you find a way to improve your healthcare environment and workflows using mobility products. Intel Core i7 vpro processor 4

Meeting top priorities in healthcare Survey respondents listed clinical workflow and immediate access to patient information as the two top operational concerns that Fujitsu mobile products have helped them successfully address. These aspects of patient care are critical, given that fast decision-making can make the difference in getting from a diagnosis to proper treatment in time to avoid medical emergencies and possibly save lives. Drivers of health IT decisions Healthcare environments are demanding and face-paced, making it critical that mobile devices used by clinicians are high performing and provide instant response times. Indeed, performance ROI is ranked as the top driver among survey respondents, following price, for deciding which mobility devices to integrate into a healthcare organization s workplace. With the Intel Core i7 processors in Fujitsu laptops, tablets, and 2-in-1s, performance is no longer a concern. The i7 offers the best performance in the market for a difference you can see and feel in HD and 3D, multitasking and multimedia. What are your primary drivers for Health IT decisions? Price Performance ROI 66% 64% Clinical workflow preference 55% Vendor relationship/ preferred partner 45% GPO contract/tender Other 5% 9% 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% Intel Core i7 vpro processor 7

What a difference a device makes Healthcare professionals evaluated the top improvements they experienced in their daily workflows and care delivery that they attribute to using Fujitsu mobile devices. More than half of the healthcare professionals surveyed, for example, cited the patient data capture in Fujitsu devices, driven by the Intel Core i7 processors, as a key benefit. Other ways that respondents said mobility had enhanced patient care at their organizations: Simple patient assessment and data capture using devices to pull up previous patient information. Convenient procedures for taking notes and memos related to patient care throughout the workday. Improved accessibility to clinician decision support and real-time communication. High-definition imaging capability due to the Intel Core Processors. Intel Core i7 vpro processor 8

Improving clinical workflow with mobility Clinical workflow defines a series of tasks in the delivery of clinical services, describing how tasks are accomplished, in what order and by whom, per Health Catalyst, a healthcare data services company. The quality of care delivered in clinics strongly depends on how efficient your clinical workflow is. Enabling a modernized digital ecosystem can deliver true business value. At the heart of digital transformation is human-centric innovation. Mobility plays a big role in human-centric innovation and workflow efficiency and a key mobility device feature in this context is usability. Clinicians require multiple methods of capturing data. For example, clinicians often wear gloves while entering data, requiring mobility devices that are touch sensitive. In other circumstances, they might require a pen data entry method or a keyboard. Human-centric innovation and usability features such as pen and touch, palm-vein security, connectivity and tailor-made features on the mobility products significantly accelerate an organization s digital transformation. Reliability is another must. Fujitsu mobility devices long battery life and use of marketing-leading Intel Core i7 processors make these devices extremely dependable for those long work days. Intel Core i7 vpro processor 9

Efficiencies lead to smart patient decisions Having access to patient data at one s fingertips is fundamental to accurately assessing, diagnosing and treating patients. Achieving this daily helps create a reliable clinical workflow that provides health professionals with the critical information they need to deliver quality care. Survey respondents ranked how Fujitsu mobile devices helped streamline their workflows. The majority cited improvements in their ability to capture data and assess patients and to pair relevant notes and memos with patient information as the biggest benefits. Intel Core i7 vpro processor 10

What daily activities/tasks within the clinical workflow did Fujitsu mobile products help streamline? Patient assessment data capture 68% Notes and memos 54% Mobility at the patient bedside Clinical decision support and real-time communication Lab orders and results 34% 32% 32% e-prescribing 20% Prescription drug reference Other 17% 22% 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% 70% Intel Core i7 vpro processor 11

Key mobile device characteristics Clinicians are always on the move. Caring for a mix of patients, requires an array of flexible options in their mobile devices: Durability, including ruggedized options Easy portability from room to room (lightweight devices) Choice of input options from keyboard to touch to stylus Choice of resolution and screen size for different clinical situations Long battery life, as there is little time to charge devices in a busy environment Resistance to spills Fujitsu laptops are reliable and long-lasting. I know they are going to work when I need them so I can focus on other aspects of our online delivery system. George W Wright, Director of Georgia Tech Online, Georgia Institute of Technology Intel Core i7 vpro processor 12

The clinicians weigh in Indeed, clinical survey takers cited light weight and long battery life as the most important mobile device features and those that prompted them to invest in Fujitsu mobile products. What are the key features that helped you decide to go with Fujitsu mobile products? Light weight Long battery life Pen and touch 61% 61% 60% Screen size 47% Anti-microbial keyboard 37% Strengthened glass 24% Other 21% 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% Intel Core i7 vpro processor 13

8 essentials of a healthcare mobile solution The TechValidate survey indicates that the key essentials in mobility devices are as follows: Reliability Usability Durability Performance Based on decades of our experience serving health care customers, Fujitsu has found that mobile devices must support four additional essentials: Security.
