USERS MANUAL Serial Interface Modules TTL to RS232/RS485/RS422 The modules converts serial TTL signals to RS232 or RS485/RS422. They are available in several different configuration such as directly mountable on MPL s Single Board Computers (ie. PIP9, MIP440GX) or as external modules (useable for MIP405, VCMA9). The RS232 modules converts the 3 TTL Signals to RS232 Signals and 5 RSR232 Signals to TTL Signals. The RS485/RS422 modules are galvanic isolated and no external power supply is needed. Features Availabe in several different configurations: RS232 Modules: 3 TTL to RS232 signal converter 5 RS232 to TTL signal converter up to 20kbps Data Rate ESD Protected RS485/RS422 Modules: completely galvanic isolated either 4 wire (Full-duplex RS485) or 2 wire (Half-duplex RS422) configuration. up to 250kbps Data Rate ESD Protected 2004 by MPL AG MEH-008-00 Rev. High-Tech Made in Switzerland. Introduction. About this manual This manual assists the installation procedure by providing all hardware related information necessary to handle and configure the Modules..2 Safety precautions and handling For personal safety and safe operation of the Modules, follow all safety procedures described here and in other sections of the manual. Power must be removed from the system before installing (or removing) the Modules X to prevent the possibility of personal injury (electrical shock) and/or damage to the product. Handle the product carefully, i.e., dropping or mishandling the Modules can cause damage to assemblies and components. Do not expose the equipment to moisture. WARNING There are no user-serviceable components on the Modules.3 Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection Various electrical components within the product are sensitive to static and electrostatic discharge (ESD). Even a nonsensible static discharge can be sufficient to destroy or degrade a component's operation!.4 Equipment safety Great care is taken by MPL that all its products are thoroughly and rigorously tested before leaving the factory to ensure that they are fully operational and conform to specification. However, no matter how reliable a product, there is always the remote possibility that a defect may occur. The occurrence of a defect on this device may, under certain conditions, cause a defect to occur in adjoining and/or connected equipment. It is the user s responsibility to ensure that adequate protection for such equipment is incorporated when installing this device. MPL accepts no responsibility whatsoever for such kind of defects, however caused. 2004 by MPL AG 3 MEH-008-00 Rev. A

High-Tech Made in Switzerland 5.2 RS485/RS422 5.2. Differences between RS485 and RS422 The major difference betweeen RS485 and RS422 is the bus topology. RS422 allows multi-drop (one transmitter, up to 0 receiver on one two wire connection) operation, whereas RS485 allows multi-point (up to 32 transmitter/receiver on one two wire connection). Driver Receiver Termination Termination Up to 32 Driver/Receiver Figure 5- Typical RS485 multi-point Application Driver Termination Receiver Up to 0 Receiver Figure 5-2 Typical RS422 multi-drop Application Since the electrical Specification of the RS485 Driver/Receiver is backward compatible with the electrical Specification of the RS422 Driver/Receiver, the RS485/422 modules can be used for either Interface. Due to the topology, RS422 is often used/refered as RS422 full-duplex Interface and RS485 is refered as RS485 halfduplex Interface. Set the DIP switch S according your bus topology (The last Receiver on the bus must be terminated). 5.2.4 RS485 Configuration To use the modules as RS485 Interfaces, connect the Receive+ (Rx+) to the Transmit+ (Tx+) and the Receive- (Rx-) to the Transmit- (Tx-). Then connect the 2 wires to your bus. Make sure, that your Software Driver asserts the RTS# (Ready To Send) Signal only during transmitting data to the bus.
