1. INTRODUCTION The HyQuest Solutions Rainfall Sentry model RS3 is a low power, microprocessor controlled device designed to monitor rainfall and operate external pumps and/or solenoid valves to control the discharge of storm water into a sewage system. It detects pulses from a Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge, and when a set number of tips have been detected within a selected time period, a relay is operated to control a pump. Another settable timer determines how long the relay is held on for. If pulses from the TBRG are detected while the relay is activated, then the relay hold timer is restarted. 2. SPECIFICATIONS Programmable Settings: Tipping bucket size (0.2mm, 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 0.01 ) Rainfall required to trigger operation (1mm to 20mm) (0.01 to 0.5 ) Rainfall Period (1hr to 24 hrs) Relay hold time (1hr to 24 hrs) Power Requirements: Input: 6V DC (to power internal relay only) Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge (TBRG) Output Relay: 2 x Voltage Free contacts rated at 30V DC 0.5A 3
3. INSTALLATION *** Please Note *** The RS3 must be powered by a 6V DC supply. The relay contact outputs are voltage free and rated at 30V DC 0.5A. If operating a mains powered pump, the user must supply a separate slave relay/contactor. The RS3 does not have an IP rating, so a weatherproof enclosure may be required. 4
4. CONFIGURING / OPERATION There are 8 LCD screens available for status and configuring the RS3. The screens can be stepped through by pressing the Scroll button. The Select button is used to change a configurable option (display flashes) then press Scroll to change the option and press Select again to save the selection and stop the option flashing. Press any button to switch on the LCD screen. The LCD will turn off automatically after 15 seconds. LCD Display RSentry3 Rev 1.1 Battery OK 0.2mm 00:15 Reset No Bucket 0.2mm RainTrip 1.6 mm RainTime 1 hr HoldTime 1 hr Description Displays the model and software revision Displays the internal 3.6V lithium battery condition as OK or Low (This battery powers the clock/timer) Replace the battery when Low Displays the rainfall in the last hh:mm if triggered, then it displays Trig d if retriggered by further bucket tips then it displays Retrig d Allows the operation to be reset. (same as powering the unit off then on) Press Select to change the No to a Yes Displays the TBRG bucket size as 0.2mm / 0.5mm / 1.0mm / 0.01in Press Select to change the bucket size to match your TBRG Displays the amount of rainfall required to trip the relay. Press Select to change the rainfall required. (1.0mm to 20.0mm) or (0.01in to 0.50in) Displays the period of time in which to measure the rainfall to trip the relay. Press Select to change the time period. (1hr to 24 hrs) Displays the period of time the relay will be closed for. Press Select to change the time period. (1hr to 24 hrs) If the RainTrip amount of rain falls within the RainTime period, then the relay will be triggered. After the relay is triggered and the HoldTime timer starts, any extra bucket tip detected will restart the HoldTime timer that keeps the relay activated. The operation can be Reset at any time by scrolling to the Reset menu and selecting Yes. The operation is shown diagrammatically on the following page. 5
This example has the following setup : Bucket is set to say 0.2mm RainTrip is set to say 1.0mm RainTime period is set to say 1 hr HoldTime is set to say 3 hrs which means 5 bucket tips in 1 hour will trip the relay operation, and a bucket tip within the next 3 hours will restart the relay timer. Relay State Off HoldTime period On Tips RainTime period Timer starts when the first tip occurs Timer expired and did not have 5 tips in period Timer starts again 5 tips within the timer period so relay turns on. Timer starts again for each bucket tip while relay is on. HoldTime period expired since no more tips occurred. Sequence starts again when the first tip occurs When a rain gauge tip input is detected, the timer is started. If no further tips occur within the timer period then the unit re-enters the reset state. If however, the selected number of tips occur within the time period then the relay is turned on. Once the relay is operated, each tip will restart the timer, whilst maintaining the on state of the relay. If no further tips occur and the timer expires, the relay is turned off and the timer enters the reset state. 6
