Network License Quick Start Guide Network Licensing Concepts A Standalone License permits the use of applications on a single computer. License management is done on that computer and every single installed application requires a separate license code. Network Licensing is more flexible than Standalone Licensing. It allows you to designate one PC or server to run the Network License Server a lightweight service that runs in the background and requires a license code. The number of available licenses (also known as seats) is encoded in this license code required only for the server. Applications communicate with a license server during startup to acquire a license. If no license is available, applications can search for open seats on other servers. IMPORTANT: For Network License Server, please select a PC that is stable and is always available on the network. It can be any PC, but Laptops or Notebooks are not recommended. An operating system of Windows NT or later (2000, XP, 2003 Server) is recommended due to its support for Windows Services. The client applications (i.e. pcacolumn, pcaslab, etc.) can be installed on any PC on the network. Commuter license is an embedded feature of network license. System Requirements Operating Systems Figure 1: Network Licensing Typical Configuration Windows NT4 / 2000 / XP / 2003 Server (recommended) Windows 98 2nd Edition / ME (not recommended) Minimum Requirements 100 MHz processor 32 MB of RAM memory 50 MB of free hard disk space for program installation 1

Network License Quick Start Guide Network Requirements Local Area Network (LAN) supports TCP/IP or IPX protocol. License Server and Client Installation IMPORTANT: Applications require Rainbow SentinelLM 7.2.0 or higher. If you already have SentinelLM 7.2.0 or higher running on your designated server for other applications, you can skip step 1 and go directly to step 2. If you have SentinelLM 7.1.0 or prior on your server, then you either have to migrate existing licenses to SentinelLM 7.2.0 or you have to select another PC to run SentinelLM 7.2.0. Only one version of SentinelLM can run on one server. Step 1: Installing License Serve Software 1.1. Login as Administrator on your designated Server PC. 1.2. If you have the CD, place it in the CD-ROM drive. Open Windows Explorer to browse CD-Drive:\License_Server directory. If you do not have the CD, download file from http://www.pcastructurepoint.com/ftparea/license_server.exe. 1.3. Double click on the License_Server.exe. This is SentinelLM 7.2.0.23. 1.4. Follow the steps in Installation Wizard and install the license server. Do not change the default installation paths. This documentation will refer to them. Step 2: Obtaining Locking Code off License Server 2.1. Start Windows Explorer and go to the directory containing SentinelLM applications (C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\Admin\Admin.net\Win32\). 2.2. Double click on wechoid.exe. 2.3. The dialog box (Figure 2) will show up. Uncheck everything except Disk ID. 2.4. Write down the Locking Code at the bottom of the dialog box. For example, the Locking Code on Figure 2 is 4-123AB (yours may be different). Also write down the IP Address or Host Name of the server for later use. 2

Network License Quick Start Guide Figure 2: System Info Dialog Box Step 3: Obtaining License Code 3.1. Visit the online license generation page. Click on the link below or type it into the address bar of your internet browser, then press Enter key. The URL to this web page is http://www.pcastructurepoint.com/licensing/license_profile.asp 3.2. On the first page (Figure 3), select the software to be licensed from the Please Select a Product drop-down list, and then select the I d like to get license code for my network version. radio button. Press Next button to go to the next step. Figure 3: Online License Generation Step 1 3.3. On the second page (Figure 4), enter order number, serial number, and locking code. If you are not sure where to find them, press the Example links to see examples. Press the Request License Code button to go to the next step. 3

Network License Quick Start Guide Figure 4: Online License Generation Step 2 3.4. On the third page (Figure 5), enter email address of the license requester. The domain name of this email address must be the same as the domain name of the purchaser s email address. Optionally, the license code will be sent to any valid email address provided in the CC Email field. Press the Generate License Code button to generate and see the license code. 3.5. Your license code will be shown on the next screen and sent to the requester s email address (as well as to the CC email address, if provided). If you have any difficulties to generate the license online, please send an email to licensing@pcastructurepoint.com with the following information: Order Number (e.g. 50188) Serial Number (e.g. 1000888) Locking Code (e.g. 4-123AB) Product Name (e.g. pcacolumn) Number of seats purchased (e.g. 3) Full Contact Info (Your Name, Company Name, Address, Phone Number) We will then process your request and email you back the License Code. 4

Network License Quick Start Guide Figure 5: Online License Generation Step 3 Step 4: Configuring License Server 4.1. Run WlmAdmin.exe tool. This utility is by default installed in the C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\Admin\Admin.NET\Win32 folder. Open proper folder if SentinelLM is not installed in the default folder. Figure 6: WlmAdmin before license installation 4.2. On the left pane of WlmAdmin window (Figure 6), click on the + sign in front of the Subnet Servers, and then click on the + sign in front of the name of the server (e.g. SentinelLM-Server). If any features are already installed, they will be listed under the server name, otherwise, nothing is listed. 4.3. Right click on the server name, select Add Feature / From a String from the pop up menu (Figure 7). 5

Network License Quick Start Guide Figure 7: Right click on the server name to show this pop up menu 4.4. On the Add Feature to Server dialog box (Figure 8), check the Add feature to server s file check box. Copy the license code for one PCA product (e.g. pcaslab) from the license code email, and then paste it into the License code text box. Leave the Distribution criteria text box empty. Press Add button to continue. If you receive an error message after pressing the Add button, refer to the Troubleshooting section at the end of this guide. Figure 8: Check the check box and copy/paste license code 4.5. Repeat step 3 and 4 to add all the PCA software features one by one. After you are finished, all the features should be listed under the server name (Figure 9). The server has been configured successfully. Please note that the license version and your software version do not need to match exactly. This allows free updates to be installed without obtaining new license codes. Figure 9: All the features are installed successfully Step 5: Configuring Client Applications IMPORTANT: This step has to be repeated on every single client PC that will run PCA applications (i.e. pcacolumn, pcaslab, etc.). 5.1. Login as Administrator on the client PC. 6

Network License Quick Start Guide 5.2. Refer to product specific Quick Start Guide to install the application software on the client PC. If you do not have the CD, visit http://www.pcastructurepoint.com to download the latest version and install it. Quick Start Guides are also available on our website. IMPORTANT: If you purchased and installed the software before October 1, 2003, you may have a version that is not compatible with the network license server. Please visit http://www.pcastructurepoint.com to download the latest version and install it. 5.3. On the client PC, open Windows Explorer and go to client application directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\PCA\pcaColumn\). 5.4. Use a text editor (e.g. Notepad) to open a file named lshost.txt in this client application directory. Delete any text that may be present (e.g. no-net), and type in the license server IP address in the first line. For example, if the Network License Server is running on a PC with an IP address of 192.168.1.100, just type in 192.168.1.100 in the first line. Save and close this file. TIP: You may enter multiple IP addresses (each in a separate line) in the lshost.txt file to specify redundant license servers. This will force the application to search for an available license seat starting from the server specified in the first line and subsequently moving to the next specified server if there is no license available on the current server. Also, if you prefer that applications detect license server automatically, you can use LAN keyword in a single line in the lshost.txt file. Since the applications use broadcast method to detect server, startup time is longer in this approach. Please note that the broadcasting is performed only in the subnet where client computer is located. If client computer and license server are located in different subnets, server IP address must be used. The configuration is complete. Now you are ready to use the application. Congratulations! Troubleshooting 1. Problem: Error [19] when adding license. SentinelLM: Error [19]: Failed to add license code a. The license code copied is incorrect or incomplete. Make sure you copy and paste the proper and the whole license code from license email, and then try again. If error persists, follow the alternative procedures in Problem 4 to add features manually. 7

Network License Quick Start Guide Figure 10: Determine License Server Status Using WlmAdmin.exe 2. Problem: Client computer cannot find license server. a. Make sure the license server is running properly (Figure 10). b. Open Windows Explorer, and then go to PCA software folder. For example, the default path for pcacolumn is C:\Program Files\PCA\pcaColumn\. Double click to open lshost.txt. Make sure the IP address of the license server is in this file. Please use IP address rather than server name because occasionally server name does not work. If this file is empty, the client (e.g. pcacolumn) will try to locate the license server by broadcasting in the same subnet. If the license server and client are in different subnet, IP address of the license server must be in the lshost.txt file on the client computer. 3. Problem: License server does not run. a. Make sure license code is applied to the computer from which the locking code is extracted. License code and locking code must match on a particular computer. Please follow Step 2 Obtaining Locking Code off License Server to double check the locking code, and compare it to the locking code in the email sent to you by pcastructurepoint. b. If the license server computer is running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows 2003 Server, an exception must be set up in Windows Firewall. Open Control Panel and check the status of the 8

Network License Quick Start Guide Windows firewall. If the status is On (recommended), add an exception for UDP port 5093 (Figure 11). Open this port if it is blocked by any other active firewall software running on the server. Figure 11: Windows Firewall c. Open Windows Explorer and go to the folder where lservrc file is located. The default path to this file is C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\SentinelLM 7.2.0.23 Server\English\. Make sure the first character of the file name is l (for library), not I (for International) or 1 (one). d. If you have multiple license codes in lservrc file, make sure there is only one license code per line. If you need to append a new license code to an existing lservrc file, make sure the new license code is put in a new line. You may need to uncheck Word Wrap in notepad as shown in Figure 12. Figure 12: Uncheck Word Wrap in Notepad 9

Network License Quick Start Guide e. The lservrc file must NOT have any extension. It is a common mistake that a.txt is appended to this name. By default, Windows Explorer hides all the known extensions including.txt. To turn off this feature of Windows Explorer, click on Folder Options in the Tools menu, select View tab, and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types as shown in Figure 13. Figure 13: Show Extensions for Known Types in Windows Explorer f. The service SentinelLM must be restarted (or simply reboot the server) after license code is entered into lservrc file. For other network license related issues, please refer to the FAQ Network License section on our website (http://www.pcastructurepoint.com/support_faq_network_license.asp). 4. Problem: License server configuration described in Step 4 above does not work. If the license server configuration described in Step 4: Configure the License Server does not work, alternatively you may follow the steps below to add features to your server. a. Open Windows Explorer and go to directory containing the license file (C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\SentinelLM 7.2.0.23 Server\English\). b. If a file named LSERVRC (or lservrc in lowercase) does not exist in this directory, use a text editor (e.g. Notepad) to create one. Copy and paste the License Code that you have received from pcastructurepoint into this file. Make sure that there is only one license code per line. Save and close this file. 10

Network License Quick Start Guide IMPORTANT: Make sure that file name is exactly LSERVRC without any extensions. Otherwise licenses will not work. By default, Notepad adds a.txt extension. Please remove this extension using Windows Explorer. c. Restart the license server. For Windows NT or later: Go to Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools, then Services. SentinelLM license server should be listed there. Select it and start the license server by clicking on start. If it is already running, restart it by clicking on RESTART. For Win 9x: If license server is running, a separate window will display with the message License Server Running. Close this window to stop the license server. Open Windows Explorer and go to directory C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies \SentinelLM7.2.0.23 Server\ English\. Double click on lserv9x.exe to restart the License Server. d. Verify the licenses by running application WlmAdmin.exe (located in C:\Program Files\Rainbow Technologies\Admin\Admin.net\Win32). All available licenses will be shown in this application (Figure 10). In the top left corner, expand the Subnet Servers by pressing the +. Your server s name should be visible there. Expand the server name. All the available licenses should be listed there. 11

IMPORTANT: These steps are for standalone license only. If you are installing a network license, please read chapter Network License Quick Start Guide. This guide applies to pcacolumn, pcaslab, pcabeam, pcamats, and pcawall since the installations steps are identical. The following guide uses pcacolumn as an example.
