OBJECTIVE The Residency Research Network of Texas (RRNeT) is a collaboration of ten family medicine residency programs located in Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, Garland, Harlingen, Lubbock, McAllen, and San Antonio (2 programs). About 100 family physician faculty and 300 family medicine residents see more than 300,000 patient visits per year. Approximately 52% of our patients are Hispanic, 13% are African American and 3% of Asian. Approximately 70% of our patients are classified as ethnic or racial minorities. Although some patients utilize a combination of insurance programs, approx. 48% of our patients have government sponsored health insurance, 28% have private insurance, whereas 27% are self-pay or utilize the county plan. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate methods of electronic communication used by our patients, including their use of cell phones, internet, and e-mail. We also wanted to determine the potential for electronic communication given computer and cell phone ownership. Finally, we wanted to determine if communication preferences and capabilities varied by age and insurance type. These estimates will help us determine if electronic communication such as web portals, e-mail messages or texting - is an option for sending and receiving health information, or for gathering research information among our patient population.
