RESOURCE DISCOVERY PAST WORK AND FUTURE PLANS Mandy Stewart Resource Discovery Research and Projects Manager May 2013

The Implementation of Primo Primo was a 1 st step in implementing new search and navigation technologies: Offered functionality we need for new core services Promise of scalability Community dialogue on development path Product Working Group To try out new models of digital discovery and access services Open Platform Strategy, EL Commons Experience of working with Ex Libris on Aleph gave us confidence that they understand [some of] the British Library s needs Twelve releases of the BL Primo between 2008 and 2012 2

Primo Planning Project plan phased to account for: New releases of software more frequent than usual Addition of new data sets Development of new functionality Improvements to Web 2.0 capabilities These changes lead to a situation of permanent beta (or continuous improvement) for the project Now moved to Business as Usual with the same continuous improvement approach 3

Content in Explore the British Library Data has now been harvested into Primo from the following sources: Electronic Table Of Contents 43.8 million records Aleph 14.3 million records (including 500 Datasets records) Sound Archive 5.05 million records SFX KB 413,000 records Content Management System 60,800 records DLS ejournal Articles 35,900 Legal Deposit Articles 26,500 BIPC Trade Literature 6,500 records Web Archive 8,800 records 4

Full launch of Explore the British Library January 2012 the old Aleph OPAC was switched off Explore the British Library and the Aleph OPAC ran in parallel for three years Extensive communications and training were carried out for staff and customers It was still a shock! However the latest Reader Satisfaction Survey results (December 2012) show levels of satisfaction back up to pre switch off levels 5

Archives and Manuscripts Search Our Catalogue Archives and Manuscripts: This is a separate implementation of Primo Provides searching from the Integrated Archives and Manuscripts System developed in-house for cataloguing Data migration from legacy systems completed in 2012 - a complex and challenging task User Panel provided testing and feedback Now provides access to 3 million Archive and Manuscript records Special requirements to provide a hierarchical view of data now part of a new project 6

Source and delivery systems Source catalogue Delivery system ILS Catalogue incorporates: Newspaper Library BNB Catalogue Document Supply Research Datasets Electronic Resources (SFX) Sound Archive Web Archive Trade Literature Digital Library Explore the British Library S F X Reading Room Request Subscribed Digital Library System Remote Supply EThOS Sound Archive requestin g Content Management System BL Website Electronic Table of Contents Web 7

What do users want? Drivers for change four to five years ago: Larger aggregations of data Single point of discovery Integration with delivery and access services Interaction with our content Forward from now: Help with navigation Semantic searching Full text searching Personalisation 8

Next Generation Search Tools Focus on tools to work with current Primo functionality to provide additional discovery capability. Three specific areas: Semantic searching Data visualisation Full text searching Tender for first stage semantic search tool completed Will test with users as part of the project 9

Ex-Libris Developments Primo ScholarRank To determine the position of an item on a result list, ScholarRank is designed to take into account the following three elements: The degree to which the item matches the query A score representing the item s scholarly value (referred to as the ScholarRank value score) Information about the user and the user s research need at the specific point in time 10

Challenges still to come Ongoing improvements to the user experience: facet changes FRBR (record grouping) improvements new functionality browsing Accessing more digital content from the DLS as well as third party websites Managing meta-searching to BBC content, the web archive and others Linking to cloud metadata; Primo Central, Summon 11
