Further Information manages the IT infrastructure of the University and offers a range of facilities and services to assist a community of over 20,000 staff and students with their IT-related needs. The role of staff is to proactively support both generic and specific IT requirements for teaching and research in academic departments and/or IT business needs of support and administrative departments. They proactively liaise with end-users, staff and other stakeholders in terms of supporting these requirements and to deliver improved effectiveness and efficiency through the use of IT across the University. is organised into three main service teams: User Services, Technical Services and Corporate Services. IT Systems Engineers typically perform duties within the Technical Services team but may be attached to another service team. The IT infrastructure landscape that falls under the responsibility of Technical Services includes the data (wired and wireless) and voice network, firewalls, data centres, NOC, managed desktop/laptop infrastructure, central services (such as email, Web CMS, VLE, DNS and storage) which operate over a mix of Unix and Windows server environments, hosted servers and server virtualisation. Subteams within Technical Services specialise in Networking Infrastructure, Windows System Administration or Unix System Administration. The Network Infrastructure Team is responsible for delivering and supporting a secure and resilient network infrastructure, tailored for the University s connectivity needs, focusing on the design, implementation, monitoring and maintenance of IP networking equipment, VoIP telephony and structured cabling within and between all University buildings at the various campuses. Windows Servers are deployed for various core functions, ranging from use of Active Directory and File Server roles for supporting managed desktops/laptops, to SQL Server for enterprise applications and Hyper-V infrastructure for virtualisation. Unix is widely used in supporting both research and core services including the University website and most web-enabled services such as the Moodle based Virtual Learning Environment, as well as various middleware. also assists in the operation of the.mt domain as well as Malta s participation in the GÉANT project. staff may be required to operate from the main site on campus, from other sites on campus, or other University sites, in order to service the various University departments and as may be required by the University. staff placed with specific University departments may be assigned duties on a day-to- day basis by these departments but will be required to coordinate with senior staff in terms of servicing the departments and will ultimately report to the relevant head of service team within and to the Chief Information Officer & Director of.

Post of IT Systems Engineer IT Systems Engineers may also be attached to User Services or Corporate Services team. Main duties & responsibilities may include: Network Infrastructure: Contribute to user requirements analysis and design of proposals; Playing a key role in the process of identifying, procuring, installing, securing, commissioning, documenting, monitoring and maintaining equipment including:- o Layer 2/3 switches; o Wireless infrastructure; o Routers; o Firewall; o VoIP devices; Assisting in the process of identifying, outsourcing, documenting and maintaining passive network cabling including CAT 5E/CAT 6A and optic fibre; Assist with the service monitoring and alerting systems, including Nagios; Windows System Administration: Playing a key role in the process of installing, securing, commissioning, documenting, monitoring and maintaining IT Systems, including: o Active Directory Services management including Group Policy; o Hyper-V virtualisation infrastructure; o SQL Server environment supporting core enterprise software; o Operating systems; o End-user devices including managed desktops/laptops; Supporting the relevant departments with enterprise software, including Student, Library, Finance and HR information management systems. Unix System Administration: Playing a key role in the process of installing, securing, commissioning, documenting, monitoring and maintaining systems, including: o Linux systems, predominantly Ubuntu LTS, but also other distributions as may be mandated by a particular application s supplier; o Apache, MySQL and PHP in a LAMP environment; o Apache as a Reverse Proxy; o Squid web caching. Assist with the technical aspects of systems such as the University s Web CMS and VLE. Other Manage incident reports for service outages or degradation of service including liaison with external entities, to ensure prompt and adequate service, where appropriate; Proactively prepare proposals and recommendations to improve existing facilities, systems, services and policies (e.g. security, networking, green IT etc); Design and develop scripts to automate day-to-day operational tasks; Implement appropriate disaster recovery and business continuity plans; Integration of current and new information systems; Contribute to third-tier support processes, resolving problems, documenting root causes and improving service levels; Supervise junior staff and assist other staff taking over their responsibilities as may be necessary. The post holder may be required to act as the primary liaison point for the University s involvement in national and international projects and collaborations. This includes participation in overseas meetings/events as necessary; Investigate new technologies and applications including their use in higher education, contributing technical expertise to decision-making within the department and sharing such expertise with other colleagues within and wider University; Formulate operational plans, continuous service improvements, and development road-maps, ensuring services and infrastructure are secure and documented, and remain current and provisioned & supported in line with recognised best practice; Act as the primary liaison point for IT systems-related tendering and contractual documents, proactively highlighting issues and recommending solutions.
