VDI: Trubleshting Tips IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND: What yu see n the VDI screen after yu lgin is NOT actually n the VDI unit itself. The Windws desktp and all assciated sftware streams t the VDI unit and is nt actually running n the unit (much like hw Netflix, Sptify, and HULU stream t yur devices ver yur hme netwrk and are nt actually running n thse devices). General Rule: Changing a student frm ne VDI unit t anther t accunt fr testing issues is the last thing that yu need t d. Lgging ut and then lgging back in is the equivalent f mving the child t a different cmputer because when yu lg ut and in again, yu receive a cmpletely different Windws desktp even thugh yu are sitting at the same VDI unit. Mst Cmmn Issue: A lss in netwrk cnnectivity caused by a disldged netwrk patch cable at either the wall r the VDI unit itself Prir t testing: Ensure that the netwrk patch cable is FIRMLY seated in the back f the VDI Unit as well as in the data prt n the wall r netwrk raceway. Why is visual inspectin nt gd enugh? Patch cables have a small clip n them that is designed t secure the patch cable in bth the VDI unit as well as the data prt n the wall. Over time, these clips get brken ff and the patch cable then nly sits in the cmputer ur data prt. Mving the VDI unit r the patch cable itself CAN cause the patch cable t lse an apprpriate cnnectin even thugh it LOOKS like it is plugged in. During Testing: LOGGING OFF VS. DISCONNECTING There is a difference between LOGGING OFF and DISCONNECTING FROM the VDI unit. Lgging ff is an actin perfrmed by the user. This actin tells the central server I AM FINISHED with the cnnectin and d nt need t recver anything that I was just wrking n. Discnnecting is seen as an accident that may have been caused by a drp in the netwrk cnnectin r even a request by the user wh discnnects vs. lgs ut. Regardless f why it ccurs, a DISCONNECT tells the server I MAY BE RIGHT BACK GIVE ME A FEW MINUTES! We allw a windw f 5 minutes fr the user t try t recnnect whenever a discnnect (either accidental r intentinal) ccurs What can trigger a DISCONNECT? Netwrk patch cable is disldged frm the back f the VDI unit Netwrk patch cable is disldged frm the netwrk prt n the wall r raceway Netwrk interruptin CTRL-ALT-DEL and then clicking n DISCONNECT Pushing the pwer buttn n the VDI unit Unplugging the VDI unit frm pwer Pwer utage 3
What can trigger a LOG OFF? User selecting LOG OFF frm the START menu CTRL-ALT-DEL then clicking n SEND CTRL ALT DEL and then clicking n LOG OFF Any f the DISCONNECT cnditins described abve fr which the user is unable t lg back in within the 5-minute windw SCENARIOS: The student is wrking in the test and suddenly they are nt able t click n anything n the screen. The test is still pen, and the muse even mves, but the screen des nt respnd and lks t be FROZEN. Yu have 5 minutes Check the netwrk patch cable cnnectin at bth the back f the VDI unit as well as at the wall as described in the PRIOR TO TESTING sectin. Ensure that bth ends are securely seated at bth lcatins. Try t interact with the test site again t see if cntrl has been restred The student is wrking in the test and suddenly they are kicked cmpletely ut f the VDI sessin and returned t the VDI Hub Selectin Screen Yu have 5 minutes Immediately attempt t get the student lgged back int the same VDI unit. If successful within the 5-minute windw, the student shuld be taken right back t the same spt in the test and be able t cntinue. Test functinality des nt seem t be wrking quite right. Yu can still interact with the test and cntrl the screen mtin, but certain features are n lnger respnsive. Exit the test using n-screen ptins if available Lg ut f the desktp using the START MENU r by using CTRL ALT DEL n the keybard, clicking n SEND CTRL ALT DEL and then clicking n LOG OFF in the windw that appears Nw lg back in t the same machine, launch the testing sftware, lgin with the apprpriate student testing credentials, and cntinue the test sessin. If yu can t seem t exit the test using n-screen prmpts Press CTRL ALT DEL n the keybard, click n SEND CTRL ALT DEL and then click n LOG OFF in the windw that appears Nw lg back in t the same machine, launch the testing sftware, lgin with the apprpriate student testing credentials, and cntinue the test sessin. The student is unable t lgin t the VDI unit successfully due t inaccurate lgin credentials The Teacher shuld lgin t the VDI unit n behalf f the student and then launch the testing sftware Nw the student will lgin t the test using their testing credentials 4
NOTE: If the teacher is lgged in fr a student and that student experiences a discnnectin event the TEACHER must lg back int the cmputer in rder t attempt a recvery f the sessin. If the teacher is lgged int mre than ne cmputer fr varius students and multiple students experience a discnnectin event, the teacher must still lg back int the VDI unit fr each f thse students. Thse students will then be delivered their apprpriate test sessin. The VDI unit is displaying a message that says Waiting fr Netwrking Check the netwrk patch cable cnnectin at bth the back f the VDI unit as well as at the wall as described in the PRIOR TO TESTING sectin. Ensure that bth ends are securely seated at bth lcatins. If the Waiting fr Netwrking message ges away have the student lgin as nrmal If the Waiting fr Netwrk message persists Pwer ff the VDI unit by pushing the blue pwer buttn and then pwer it back n again and try t lgin If nne f the abve ptins wrks Mve the student t a new VDI unit r ther suitable testing device and submit a Help Desk ticket t have the VDI unit assessed by a technician. The VDI unit shws that it is pwered, but nthing is shwing up n the mnitr Cnfirm that the mnitr is plugged int a wrking pwer utlet and that it is turned n as indicated by the glwing light in the bttm right-hand crner f the mnitr. Cnfirm that the VGA cable is securely affixed t the back f the mnitr as well as t the back f the VDI Unit Restart the VDI unit nce the abve has been tried Still n image shwing up.mve the student t a different VDI unit r ther apprved testing device and submit a Help Desk ticket t have the mnitr assessed by a technician. The VDI unit is nt receiving pwer Reslutin Cnfirm that the pwer crd is securely attached t the back f the VDI unit Cnfirm that the pwer crd is plugged int a wrking wall r raceway utlet Cnfirm that the pwer crd is plugged int the pwer adapter (as the pwer crd is actually made up f tw separate crds attached t the pwer adapter) Try t pwer n the unit again Still n pwer Mve the student t a new VDI unit r ther suitable testing device and submit a Help Desk ticket t have the VDI unit assessed by a technician. 5
Standard Desktps & Laptps: Desktps Ensure that the desktp is plugged int a wrking pwer utlet Ensure that the mnitr is plugged int pwer and cnnected securely at bth ends f the VGA cable t bth the cmputer and the mnitr itself Ensure that the netwrk patch cable is securely seated within the cmputer and wall/raceway prt as described in the PRIOR TO TESTING Sectin in the VDI area abve Laptps Ensure that the laptp is plugged int a wrking wall pwer utlet and that bth pieces f the pwer crd are firmly attached t the pwer brick OR that the laptp has a full charge prir t testing. Wired Cnnectin: Ensure that the netwrk patch cable is securely seated within the cmputer and wall/raceway prt as described in the PRIOR TO TESTING Sectin in the VDI area abve Wireless Cnnectin: Ensure that the wireless indicatr n the laptp is enabled (shuld be white r blue) and that the laptp is actually cnnected t the wireless netwrk Ensure that the laptp has been utilized prir t testing and allwed t perfrm all required updates PRIOR TO attempting t use the laptp fr testing. A laptp pulled frm a cart after lng perids f nt being used SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR TESTING until it has been given time t finish the required updates. Chrmebks Ensure that the Chrmebk has been prperly charged and has plenty f battery life prir t testing Cnfirm that all Chrmebks that yu plan t use fr testing have the Testing Applicatin in the APPS menu as described in the Chrmebk instructins abve It is advised that the test sftware be launched prir t using fr live testing as the first launch perfrms additinal cnfiguratin n the Chrmebk that requires a few minutes t cmplete. 6
