Next Generation In-House PCB Prototyping The New LPKF ProtoMat Circuit Board Plotters

Growing With the Job... Quick, accurate and easy to use LPKF circuit board plotters have been meeting these user requirements for more than 30 years. Their latest generation features additional potential for growth: all ProtoMat S series circuit board plotters may be upgraded step-by-step until fully equipped. LPKF Laser & Electronics AG offers a complete product line that follows in simple steps the entire prototyping process from idea to assembled board in an environmentally friendly, cost-effective way. First the circuit board is structured. This task is performed by one of the circuit board plotters in the LPKF ProtoMat line. It produces insulation channels in the substrate. The milling head cuts conductor paths on a fully coated panel where care in handling the resulting conductive pattern and the substrate is essential. ProtoMats are even useful after structuring: they can be used for drilling fine holes for the through-hole plating of double-sided PCBs or multilayer boards, depaneling individual boards from large circuit boards or machining cut-outs in front panels of high-quality housings. 2

Reliable, powerful, and compatible Additional options and upgrade kits increase the application range of LPKF ProtoMats: they make the job easier, expand their functionality and open the door to new forms of production. Features mentioned here are already standard on some machines. Automatic tool change The ProtoMat S43 can be upgraded with an automatic tool changer to handle up to 15 tools. This also includes drill bit inspection and automatic milling width adjustment. Production can now be automated, without manual intervention. Standard on the S63 and S103. Milling width adjustment An innovative milling width adjustment guarantees a pre-defined tool penetration depth, thus ensuring consistency in the milling track width. Standard on the S63 and S103. Optical fiducial recognition (camera) The optical fiducial recognition is significantly more accurate and faster than the front-to-back system. This makes the camera virtually indispensible in structuring multilayer boards and double-sided PCBs. The camera system includes automatic drill break inspection and immediate measuring function. Standard on the S63 and S103. Powerful system software included The reference for PCB prototyping: LPKF CircuitPro lets you quickly implement complex layouts. A wide range of features, optimized milling times and intuitive operator guidance ensure rapid success. CircuitPro CircuitPro Vacuum table The vacuum table secures the work piece flat across the entire work surface, eliminating any substrate irregularities such as twisting or warping. The vacuum table allows, for example, flexible and rigid-flex PCBs to be machined with ease. Standard on the S103. Dispenser Standard on the S63 and S103, upgrade on the S43: Using compressed air, the dispenser will accurately apply soldering paste onto the structured PCB. LPKF ProtoMat S63 LPKF ProtoMat S103 LPKF ProtoMat S103: The top model The ProtoMat S 103 is the most advanced model among the S-series. The fully equipped system is suitable for all applications, including multilayer and RF boards. The non-contact pneumatic working depth limiter allows substrates with delicate surfaces to be machined. Ease of use and reliability are the basis for economical and high-quality production. The S103 has all the features of the ProtoMat S63 plus: Highest available speed (100,000 rpm) Pneumatic working depth limiter Vacuum table The S43 and S63 ProtoMats can be upgraded all the way to the top-of-the-line S103: An upgrade kit quickly turns the ProtoMat S43 or S63...... into the ProtoMat S103! 5

Applications A welcome tool in the development and production of small batches: ProtoMats are all-rounders capable of more than just structuring circuit boards. Some examples: Structuring circuit boards The LPKF ProtoMats mill the PCB structure in the fully coated substrate. High-speed spindles ranging from 40,000 to 100,000 rpm, a resolution as fine as 0.25 μm (0.01 Mil) and extremely high repeatability ensure ultra-fine structures are produced. In RF & microwave applications, the ProtoMat S103 showcases its high spindle speed to the fullest by achieving extremely clean structuring results. 6

Flex and rigid-flex circuit boards These circuit boards are difficult to secure on the working surface a problem solved with a vacuum table. RF tools are great for machining the relatively soft material. Depaneling Several small layouts can be arranged on a substrate. The ProtoMats are great for cutting these circuit boards from the base material. On precut panels, the ProtoMats can be used to cut the break-out tabs. Engraving/cutting plastics and aluminum All circuit board plotters are capable of structuring, drilling mounting holes, and engraving front panels. The S63 and S103 ProtoMats are 2.5D capable which also allows slots or deeper recesses to be added to housing parts. Milling of soldering paste stencils In prototyping, milled polyimide stencils are a great alternative to steel stencils. They can be produced in-house within minutes. The milling data are designed right in LPKF CircuitPro. Ideal for training and occasional PCB Prototyping The new LPKF ProtoMat E33 is perfectly suited for milling and drilling circuit boards. This ProtoMat is especially designed for training purposes. It s not much bigger than a size A3 (11.7 x 16.5 ) sheet of paper and has no upgrade options. 7
