Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for stepping up to be a part of this year s America s Greatest Heart Run & Walk 2019 will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Utica College. You re joining a million Heart Walk Heroes from across the nation raising funds for life-saving science. Take a few minutes to consider the lives that you are going to help change for the better through your leadership and donations. Consider the heart defects that will be corrected and the strokes that will be prevented thanks to your fundraising efforts. Consider the scientific advances that will owe their success to your donation. Consider all the hearts you ll help keep beating thanks to your motivation and determination to make a dif ference. Why Your Help is Needed Every 34 seconds, someone has a heart attack. Every 40 seconds, someone has a stroke. One in three Americans has some form of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the nation s most costly illness, accounting for $298 billion in direct and indirect costs each year. Fewer than 1% of all Americans are in ideal cardiovascular health, as defined by the American Heart Association, yet 39% of Americans BELIEVE they are in ideal cardiovascular health. Now that you ve thought about the impact you ll make, let s get to work to raise money for lifesaving science together. Go ahead recruit your team, donate and see your dollars at work. Most runners and walkers are part of a team coordinated by a team captain. Participants qualify for incentives by raising money from friends, co-workers, family, etc. Those participants raising $500 or more are invited to a special celebration on May 14, 2019 qualifying them for additional prizes. Participants raising $1,000 or more become Grand VIP members are invited to attend a Grand VIP reception and receive additional benefits during America s Greatest Heart Run & Walk.
Online Guide Participant Center 1. Visit your event website - www.uticaheartrunwalk.org. 2. If you have not registered, click the REGISTER button and complete the registration process. Click Register on www.uticaheartrunwalk.org. Team Captains: Select Start a Team. Follow instructions. Team Members: Select Join a Team. Follow instructions. Individuals: Select Join as an Individual. Follow instructions. After you join a team, select Returning Participant if you have previously registered. Don't remember? Click Forgot Username/Password. You can also login using your social media account information. Don't forget to make a personal donation. My Webpage: Customize your Image/Video and Share your Story o Click on the Edit My Page Button. Participants have the option to edit their own personal webpage, while Coaches have the option to edit their team s page as well by clicking on the dropdown button. o Set your fundraising goal by clicking the My Dashboard link at top right. Your fundraising goal is listed in the left o column. To change your fundraising goal, click on Edit My Goal. All walkers are asked to set an individual fundraising goal of at least $300. Please note: A minimum of $25 in pledges is highly encouraged the day of the event for all participants over 18 yrs. o Participants should upload a photo and video to their page. The default text should also be edited.
Update the picture with a personal photo Personalizing the default video Click the Edit Video button on the right corner of the video and select personalized video Add your why (i.e. My Family) Click Save. Please wait 10 minutes to see the changes. If the changes are not shown, refresh the page and play the video!
Email: Send emails to recruit participants and fundraise Send customized e-mails to your co-workers, friends and family inviting them to join your team or to make a donation to you and receive 3 times more donations.. o Click the Email button There are two options on the email page Copy Message or Open in Default Email o Select your message from the options on the top of the screen (for example: Donation Reminder) Edit your personal story and share your Why! o o Choose either Copy message or Open in Default Email o Copy message- this will copy the message to your clipboard. You can then paste it into an email. o Open In My Default Email the message will automatically open in the email application you have set as your default. Send Email Through My Participant Center o Under Recipient put the person s email address (You have the option to import your address book from Gmail, yahoo, or your outlook) o Quickly send emails to your contacts by clicking Contacts. Check the box next to the contacts you want to email and then click Email Selected.
o If the email address is not saved with a first and last name (see below) it will be addressed Dear Friend o To enter a first name and last name click on the link with the email and enter the first and last name into the fields in the pop up box and click save. Now when you send an email it will say Dear First Name (i.e. Dear Janna). o Next to Choose a Sample Message click the dropdown arrow to view the type of email you would like to send (Automatically set to Ask 1: Donation Solicitation). o Below the addresses is the message you will be sending. You can customize the message including using bold or italics. o If you click out of this screen, the email will save in your drafts. Note: Emails will not save if you have not chosen a template OR have not entered a subject. o When you have filled everything in, click Preview & Send to see what your email will look like to you recipients. o If your email is to your satisfaction, go ahead and hit Send Email (be sure to send a copy to yourself as well)!
Fundraising with social media You can use social media to quickly ask your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to join your team or make a donation toward your fundraising efforts: o Navigate to My Dashboard o If you are not signed into your social media site you will be promoted to do that. o Personalize your message o Click the bottom to post. #HeartRunWalk Facebook/Twitter: @HeartCNY Instagram: @AHANewYork
Team Competition Teams will be organized by the American Heeart Association and compete in the following categories: Corporate (small & large businesses, retail hotels/motels) Government Schools Organizations & Clubs (service, professional & social) Unions Veterans Organizations Fire Departments Institutions of Finance (banks, credit unions, savings & loan) Friends & Family (informal groups, in memory of or tribute) Non Profits Insurance Manufacturing Fitness Counties (Lewis & North Country, Herkimer, Otsego, Madison, & Oneida) Healthcare Facilities Remember, participating in the Heart Run & Walk as a member of a team will increase the excitement of the event. There is no limit to the number of members on your team, but there is a minimum of five (5) people to be eligible for team competitions. Awards will be presented in every category listed above for highest total dollars raised by five or more members.

Ideas for Wrap-Around Events To Raise Money for Your Team Raffles! Whether 50/50 or to win a donated gift certificate/prize, selling raffle tickets monthly can contribute to your team total and raise awareness of the Run/Walk. Raffle a day off! Holiday gift wrap service/sell holiday plants Dress Down Day/Jeans Day (Get the Monday Blues) Donation jars in places of business Pot luck lunches at work Monthly bake sales Bagel or pizza days Used Book Sale! Ask your co-workers to donate books they have already read and have a giant book sale to benefit your team. Sell snacks for a $1 or more purchased by the case from stores that sell in bulk. Have your CEO or manager write a letter to your company s vendors asking them to sponsor your team (sample letter attached). Bottles and cans redemptions Car washes. Ask your CEO to volunteer to be a washer and charge extra for the CEO wash. Send a letter to friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, people you do business with, etc. Dedicate your personal effort to someone you know who has been touched by heart disease or stroke. Tell your story in a letter and why you feel it s important to walk and raise money American Heart Association has sample letters available. Enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for best results. Every little bit helps roll that extra change you have in a jar on your dresser! Ask your co-workers to do the same and donate it to your team. Remember to share this information with your team members!
