3D PRINTING Additive manufacturing process for making a physical object from a three-dimensional digital model by laying down successive thin layers of material. There are different types of 3D printers. We recommend making yourself aware of both the pros and cons of each one to make an informed decision of whether to 3d print something. 4
Design Considerations The model must have thickness (Check for Solid/Closed Polysurface) The model must be watertight. All surface normals must face outwards. Use the direction command (type DIR) in Rhinoceros to check.
Ensure there are no double surfaces. You need to ensure components within the model are joined before 3D printing. 3D Printing Software cannot recognise thicknesses thinner than 0.4 mm, check recommended thickness for the machine. Large print= high risk
Exporting for 3D printing (Rhinoceros) 1. Select one object. 2. Go to Menu File> Export Selected 3. Save as STL (Stereolithography) Your model has to be in millimetres, otherwise it will have different dimensions in the Slicer- 3D print software. Click OK for default 0.01 tolerance and Binary file type. Repeat the process if you have multiple objects. 7
Booking process 1. Download.STL and.3dm Rhino file on our Digital Fabrication Lab computers. NO USB allowed in the labs You can use your own Dropbox, Google Drive or send it you your personal email. 2. Save your files in a folder with your name in: Makerbot Print Files> 2018XXXX (Folder with the date) > Your Name 3. Import your.stl file to NetFabb to check, and if needed, to fix your file. 4. Show your file to a technician, so that we can estimate cost and time required for your project to make a booking. 5. We will book your print in receipt of print-ready files and payment. 8
Booking process - NOTES 1. All bookings are made in person at the Digital Fabrication Lab. 2. You can t book if your file is not ready to be printed. 3. On busy days, we have a waiting list to check and book 3D printing jobs. 4. Don t leave your 3D printing jobs to the last minute. 3D printing sessions fill up fast close to submission deadlines. 5. Prints can fail for a variety of reasons, and it may take more than one attempt to be successful. 9
Our 3D Printers
DMaF 3D Extruders This process melts and extrudes PLA plastic onto layers. Material: PLA Available colours: White, Black, Natural Standard layer resolution: 200-300 microns (0.20-0.30 mm) Cost: $0.20 per 1g + $10 set-up fee (inc. raft +scaffolding) 11

Powder Printer Areas required for the part are printed with the cartridge fed binding agent which solidifies each layer. ZPrinter 350 Max build Volume 200x250x200 Material: Composite Powder Colour: White Recommended minimum wall thickness 2 mm 23
Powder Printer ZPrinter 350 Cost: $0.50 per 1cm3 + $10.00 Set up charge The volume required determines print cost. Models that are hollow (and have a loose powder escape route) will cost substantially less. Recommended minimum wall thickness 2 mm 24
Powder Printer Cost: $0.50 per 1cm3 + $10.00 Set up charge The volume required determines print cost. Models that are hollow (and have a loose powder escape route) will cost substantially less. Recommended minimum wall thickness 2 mm 25
Formlabs 2 Max build Volume 140x140x170 Layer Resolution 25-100 microns Colour: White, Black, check with staff Recommended minimum wall thickness 0.6 mm 26
Formlabs 2 Cost: $1.00 per 1ml + $10.00 Set up charge The volume required determines print cost. Models that are hollow (and have a resin escape route) will cost substantially less. Recommended minimum wall thickness 0.6 mm 27
Formlabs 2 An ultraviolet (UV) laser solidifies resin layer by layer. Requires post-processing ~1 hr+ (Wash, cure) Not ideal if you need a finished model quickly. Recommended minimum wall thickness 0.6 mm 28
