Creating a new monthly issue. Start by logging into OU Campus and navigate to the /scope monthly/ folder. This folder has many files and folders within it. Each issue is broken down into its corresponding year, find the current year and enter that folder. Example: /scope monthly/2016/ Click on the green New button (near the top of the page) and select the template Create Scope Monthly Issue thumbnail. A window will display where you can enter in a directory name, page title, keywords and description. Fill in the directory name for the month that you are currently working on. The month should be spelled out and lowercase, example: january. Page title, description and keywords can be entered now or later if you choose. Click the blue Create button when finished. This will create a new folder of the directory name you just entered. The folder will consist of an index.pcf page and an images folder.
Editing a monthly issue. If you are not already, log into OU Campus and navigate to the index.pcf for the issue that you wish to edit and check it out. Example: /scope monthly/2016/may/index.pcf Editing issue date Click on the green Issue button to edit. The JustEdit editor will allow you to edit just this area. Put in the month year for the current issue. Note: the design firm chose to use a different font for the year compared to the month. When editing, bold ONLY the year and the website will apply the correct font. Editing the Hero Image Click on the green Content Region to edit. If there is a default image already in there, delete it. Use the WYSIWYG to add a new image. Upload the image to the images folder within the issue folder. Example: /scope monthly/2016/may/images/ Although the WISIWYG appears, ONLY an image should be entered into this region. To do the full width and make it responsive, the image is actually changed around behind the scenes and any links/text will be removed. Image width / height should be 1920px X 500px
Editing the Feature Articles Up to four feature articles can be added to the issue. Each is broken up in the same way, title 1, title 2, featured image, content, side text. Featured Article Titles: click on the green Title button next to their regions. Feature Article Hero Image: click on the green Hero Image button. You can upload a new image to this section or embed a video using the WYSIWYG. Image width for this section is 750px and the height can be whatever you wish. Feature Article Content: click on the green Content button next to the region. Here you will have all abilities just like the rest of pages in OU Campus.
Feature Article Sidebar: click on the green Side Text button next to the sidebar. All four featured articles work the exact same way. Scroll down to each editable region and click the green button to edit that region. If you DO NOT want a featured article to show up, remove the title from the article. Edit the title and make sure all the words are out of it. If it is not there, then conditional logic will prevent that section from showing up on the site when it is published.
Add, Edit and Remove Additional Stories The additional stories for each issue has it s own management area separate from the issue page created earlier that housed the feature stories. Navigate yourself to /scope monthly/_admin/ folder. Within this folder is a file called manage stories.pcf, check this file out and go into edit it. Under the edit tab, there will be a series of forms. This is custom programming that was built outside of OU Campus to allow for easy adding, editing, sorting and removing of stories. Click on the Issue Management link and a form will display where you can enter in Month Year for the current issue you are working on. It should be formatted as Month Year. Example: May 2016 You only need to add the issue once and can come back and edit any stories within that issue at any time. Once you have added an issue, you can then scroll down to the Story Managment area. Be sure that when adding a story, you have the correct issue selected in the drop box at the top of the page. Each story has a field for title, link, image and description. Image is not a required field. Images should be sized to 225px X 225px. The description has the ability to add links, bold and italics. Couple notes about this section. You DO NOT need to publish this page. When you make a change, it is automatically added to the page. That being said, when you finish editing the file, be sure to check out the manage stories.pcf file within OU so others have the ability to edit. You can drag and drop the stories to change their order.
Connecting Additional Stories to Issues. In order to connect the additional stories to the issues page we created that housed the feature articles, we need to do the following steps. In the admin area for the additional stories, the manage stories.pcf file. Make note (copy to your clipboard) of the issue XML file that is created and displayed under the drop down. Then go to the page you set up where you added the feature stories. It should be something like /scope monthly/2016/june/index.pcf. Check this file out and to to properties. Paste the xml file into the Additional Stories XML field. Save the page and when you go to preview the page, you should see the additional stories.
Going live with new issue When you are ready to go live, meaning you want to update the URL: http://www.skidmore.edu/scope monthly/ to point to the current months issue follow these steps. Navigation in OU to /scope monthly/ folder and find the index.pcf. Check out the page, and edit the page properties. There will be a field called, Redirect URL, edit this field with the new issue URL. Save and publish this file.
Frequently asked Questions What are the image sizes? Hero Image: 1920px X 500px Featured Article Hero Image: 750px width (height is up to you) Featured Article Content Image: 630px width (height is up to you) Additional Articles: 225px X 225px Issue date looks funny? The numbers used for the month Font look weird because that is how they are within the Font. To overcome this we put the year in a different Font. For simplicity, just bold only the year, the CSS in the website will change it to a better looking Font for numbers.
