1. Introduction This fourth Annual Report of the Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNETP) covers the period from December 2012 until December 2013. The report is a required deliverable of the SMILE project of the 7 th Euratom Framework Programme (the follow up of the SNETP Office of the 6 th Euratom FP), which corresponds to the official SNETP Secretariat. This period witnessed the consolidation of SNETP in the European Framework, as well as the publication of some key documents (like the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, the report on the Fukushima report, the ESNII Implementation Plan 203-2015 and others). Also, during this period, a collaboration framework with the IGD-TP started, together with some organisational discussions on the future of the platform in Horizon 2020. Throughout this period the Platform membership continued to grow, from 111 members in November 2012 to 116 members in December 2013. 2. Organisation and structure During this period SNETP was in charge of the prioritisation and organisation of the European R&D required to achieve the ambitious goals of nuclear fission development, in particular with respect to the SET Plan. By March 2012, SNETP gave a mandate to NUGENIA to act as the body in charge of coordinating at EU level the implementation of the R&D within its technical scope: GEN II&III R&D as described in the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of SNETP, and related crosscutting topics. This evolution of the WG Gen II&III of SNETP to NUGENIA, as an international association, is described in the picture below. The Platform 3-pillar vision is still maintained: o ESNII TF: European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative Task Force o NUGENIA: NUclear GEneration II&III Assotiation (mandated by SNETP) o NC2I TF: Nuclear Cogeneration Industrial Initiative Task Force The groups mission is to define their priorities, plan their implementation and roadmaps and propose an organisation involving the relevant stakeholders. - 3 -

After the Fukushima accident, the Governing Board decided to create and ad-hoc group, the Fukushima Task Force to prepare a report on the needs on research after the conclusions of the accident. Once the document published the group will be dormant (to be reactivated when the time comes to update this document). During this period the Governing Board decided to create a new Editorial Board in charge of the update of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, published in 2009. The new version will be ready in February 2013. Also the ETKM group has been reactivated. The current organisation structure is described in the picture below: Figure 1: Organisation chart of the SNETP, as of October 2012 3. Working Groups Editorial Board SRIA In January 2013 the final meeting of the SRA Editorial Board (composed by 14 members) took place in Paris. Once closed the public consultation, the SRIA was released in the occasion of the European Nuclear Symposium on 26th and 27th February 2013, published on the SNETP website and printed in 500 copies. In the occasion of the publication of the SRIA, the SNETP website experienced a high peak in terms of number of visits. An analysis of the results of the open consultation was published on the SNETP website and an answer was sent for most of the comments received during the consultation. Three copies of the SRIA were sent to the representative e of each platform s member as well as to the members of the Governing Board and the Executive Committee. The paper version was distributed in the occasion of several events, like the IAEA Fast Nuclear Reactors conference held in March 2013, the 8th ENEF plenary meeting held in Prague in May 2013, the FISA event held in October 2014 in Vilnius, the SNETP General Assembly and others. - 4 -

ETKM WG Education & Training The action plan presented to the Governing Board meeting on 4th October 2012 was approved. The action plan tried to consolidate all the recommendations present in the most recent international reports on E&T and obtain defined actions and the plan to be implemented with the stakeholders involved. The activities of the Working Group were revamped in the occasion of the 16 th ETKM meeting and common FORATOM E&T TF/ETKM meeting which took place in January 2013, where potential frameworks of collaboration were discussed. After the resignation from the Chairmanship by Mr Anselm Schaeffer (Technical University of Munich), Mr John Roberts (University of Manchester) was appointed as vice-chair of the Working Group. ESNII TF Advanced nuclear reactors After its formal launching in the SET Plan Conference on 15-16 November 2010, the ESNII TF has evolved in several aspects. o The Task Force started with 13 members and has now 27 (12 from the industry and 15 from Research organisations) o o The implementation plan 2013-2015 was defined and published on the SETIS and SNETP websites. From the organisational point of view, the Secretariat started the activities for the update of the Memorandum of Understanding and the Non-Disclosure Agreement (originally signed by 13 members in 2010 and expired in 2013). ESNII (and SNETP) was asked by the European Commission (SET-Plan Secretariat) to contribute in the development of the SET-Plan Integrated Research Roadmap. A representative per pillar was appointed, actively participating in the activities of the IRR Working Group, while the ExCom Chairman was involved in the activities of the Coordination Group. NUGENIA - Formerly GEN II/III TWG NUGENIA is the result of the integration process of 3 groups active in the nuclear energy research field of Generation II & III technologies: The SNETP Technology Working Group Gen II & III The NULIFE Network of Excellence on nuclear plant life management The SARNET Network of Excellence on severe accidents NUGENIA has been established as a natural progression of the NULIFE NoE and as a fruit of close collaboration with the SNETP and SARNET. The legal form of an association was chosen and is now up and running. The Association being an independent legal entity is open to all - 5 -

nuclear stakeholders endorsing the Statutes. All members of SNETP are invited to apply for membership. The SNETP Governing Board officialised its mandate to NUGENIA to act as the body in charge of coordinating at EU level the implementation of the R&D within its technical scope: GEN II&III R&D as described in the Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of SNETP, and related crosscutting topics. This mandate also details the contribution of the SMILE project to support NUGENIA, in continuation of the support provided to the Gen II/III TWG. The mandate and more information on NUGENIA are available on www.nugenia.org. NC2I TF - Cogeneration After the constitution of the Nuclear Cogeneration Industrial Initiative (NC2I) Task Force by the end of 2012, the activities of this Working Group continued throughout 2013 and the beginning of 2014. Some physical meetings and conference calls were organised, as well as a conference call with the representatives of NGNP Industry Alliance (Next Generation Nuclear Plants). NC2I paid a visit to NGNP in March 2014 to discuss possible cooperation among the two initiatives (it was decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the two initiatives). In the framework of this Working Group it was also decided to sign a Memorandum of Understanding and a Non-Disclosure Agreement among the NC2I members (the procedure is ongoing at the time of submitting this report). 4. Secretariat SNETP From June 2011 to November 2012, the administrative work of the Platform has been carried out by the EC-funded Secretariat, with the Paris-based consultancy LGI as Co-ordinator assisted by CEA, E.ON, FORATOM, UJV Rez and RI Consulting (as from its entry in the project in June 2013). The new office of LGI Consulting located in Brussels was also used, as from March 2013, for the Secretariat activities. The Secretariat has been very active in providing support to the SNETP activities by: o organising formal meetings, setting up the agendas, sending the support documents, writing the minutes and following up the decisions/actions taken o updating and operating the SNETP private and public websites o handling membership application and other electronic correspondence o arranging publication of Platform reports and documents o creating communication materials (newsletters, newsflashes, internal bulletins, etc) o representing SNETP at numerous international events The Secretariat also implemented at working level the strategy of SNETP to interact with various other entities or bodies, such as EC, ENEF, ESFRI, the SET-Plan groups, targeted European Technology Platforms and initiatives and the IAEA - 6 -
