1/5 INTRODUCTION

Document Freedom Day 30/11/2011 http://www.montclair.k12.nj. us/webpage.aspx?id=64 ( ) about the importance of Free Document Formats and Open Standards in general.

Open standards in libraries 4

Open standards OAI-PMH The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is a low-barrier mechanism for repository interoperability Data Providers are repositories that expose structured metadata via OAI-PMH. Service Providers then make OAI-PMH service requests to harvest that metadata. OAI-PMH is a set of six verbs or services that are invoked within HTTP

IT aspect

Human aspect Establishing an Institutional Repository: A Step by Step Approach Arne Jakobsson, University of Oslo Library. Library of Medicine and Health Sciences. E-mail: p.a.jakobsson@ub.uio.no The challenge in setting up an institutional repository is not a technological issue ( ), but consists of managerial, organizational and cultural issues.

2006 ANALYSIS @ KCE http://www.flickr.com/photos/crystaljingsr/3915514724

Existing workflows IT infrastructure Website Integrated Library System (ILS) E-depot Bib.belgium.be OAI module No Planned Yes, but not implemented Yes, but not implemented

EUnetHTA meta repository synchronizes regularly to LBI and KCE repositories and harvest their metadata. Description of the reports is automatically imported and made searchable at the EUnetHTA metarepository (*) The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides an application-independent interoperability framework based on metadata harvesting. 45

http://www.flickr.com/photos/crystaljingsr/3915515098 Open standards brings benefits! The description of a report (its metadata) is encoded ONCE by the producing organisation automatically available for all others 46

http://www.flickr.com/photos/crystaljingsr/3915515098 Library catalogue + OAI-PMH brings more benefits KCE makes the same description for paper and electronic report 47

http://www.flickr.com/photos/crystaljingsr/3915514422 Only two agencies (LBI & KCE)! WHAT S THE PROBLEM? 48

http://www.flickr.com/photos/crystaljingsr/3915515628 Reports are not stored within interoperable repositories META-DATA ARE LOCKED 49

http://www.flickr.com/photos/crystaljingsr/3915515628 To free your META-DATA, make use of Open standards! 50

Several portals could be built 51
