D2L Version 9.0 NavBar Editing for Instructors Customize your Course Navbar Make a Copy of the Course Default NavBar Log in to D2L Note all Fall 2010 courses come with the SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar set as Active if you are editing a course with a legacy Navbar your options may be different. Access the course you want to customize the Course NavBar Click Edit Course Click Navigation Click on the Copy SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar icon to the right of SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar (the icon looks like two pages) This creates a new Navbar called Copy of SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar Click on Copy of SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar link to access the Navbar Properties Enter a new name for the Navbar (suggestion would be course name Navbar example Faculty Resources NavBar) Add a Description for the new course Navbar DO NOT change the template in Select Template section this was created by your SCC D2L Site Admin for use at the course level and defines the course level Navbar style Copy SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar Click the Save button If you need assistance with your D2L course NavBar, submit a ticket to helpdesk@southcentral.edu
Modify & Customize Course NavBar Links After creating a copy and renaming your new course Navbar, add some additional links to your course Navbar. Click the Links tab On the Links tab, the only area you should be modifying is the Course Tools Bottom Left Link Area this is the area you will be adding / removing tools that are specific to your course. New courses in D2L are created using the Default Navbar which contains only the most commonly used course tools. While on the Links tab Click on 1 - Add Links button in the Course Tools Bottom Left Link Area By default you will see all the System Links available 2 - Put a check in the box for each item you want to add to your course Navbar - for example you may want to add the Chat tool so you would check the Chat item and click the 3 - Add button in the lower right corner of the dialog box 2 3 1 4 4 - New Navbar items are added to the end of the list of tools. Click the down arrow for the tool you want to work with. >> Choose what you would like to do with that tool from the menu that displays. >> Clicking the Customize Link Display option lets you choose to display Text only, Icon only, or Icon and Text for that tool item the default is Icon and Text. Make your choice and save.
Creating a Custom Link IMPORTANT NOTE: If creating a Custom Link to a course file, for example a Syllabus file, upload your file to your Manage Files area prior to creating the Custom Link Access the course you want to add a Custom Link Click on Custom Links Click on New Custom Link Complete the Custom Link Properties add a Name add a Description add an Icon most often you will use the Default icon add a URL you can link to a web page, a course file, or any of the course tools set Window choose New Window Click Save button If creating a Custom Icon Custom Link Image Size and Type The ideal size for custom link icons is 16 pixels high by 16 pixels wide. The file format should be either GIF or JPEG.
Adding a Custom Link to your Course NavBar Access the course you want to add a Custom Link Click on the course Navbar 1 for this example I am going to access the Online Student Lounge 2010 NavBar this is the new Navbar I am creating for the Online Student Lounge - Fall 2010 course Click on the Links tab Locate the Course Tools Bottom Left Link Area of the page this should be the primary location for adding course specific links Click on Add Links button 2 Select Custom Links from the View dropdown box and click the Go button 3 Check the box for the Custom Link you created previously, then click Add button 4 The Custom Link has been added to your course Navbar 5 1 4 3 5 2
Changing the Active NavBar for your Course Access the course you want to change the Active Navbar 1 Click on Change button 1 2 Click on the Navbar you want use for the course in this case the new Navbar I am selecting is the Online Student Lounge 2010 Navbar 3 Click the Apply button and confirm the Navbar change by clicking the 4 Set Active button The course Navbar will be updated with added tools and custom links 3 2 4
Modifying a Legacy NavBar in your Course The only time you should need to modify a Legacy NavBar is if you are using a D2L course area over several terms. This applies to only a few individuals at SCC. If you have questions on what to do with your Legacy NavBar or any of these instructions, submit a ticket to helpdesk@southcentral.edu Access the course you want to change the Active Navbar Click on the Active Navigation Bar currently being used for the course in this case the Active Navbar I am selecting is the Learning Space Station 010 On the Properties tab in the Select Template section, select the SCC v 9.0 Course Default NavBar Template Click the Save button Click on Course Home to refresh the Navbar. You will notice the look of the Navbar changed but your course links remained If you would like to make changes to your Navbar Links, click on Edit Course then Navigation Click on the Navbar you want to edit then click on the Links tab for that Navbar for instructions on customizing your course Navbar, see page 2 of this document Modify & Customize Course NavBar Links
