The power indicator goes out when the set is switched off. If battery power is low, the power indicator lights up only dimly and you will need to replace batteries. Mains Adapter (not included) 1. The voltage of the DC 3V adapter must match with the local voltage. The 3.5 mm adapter plug's 1.3 mm centre pin also must be set to the minus pole -. 2. Connect the mains adapter to the set's DC 3V ->+ socket and a wall socket. 3. Always disconnect the mains adapter if you are not using it. English Batteries (not included) 1. English CASSETTE PLAYBACK CASSETTE PLAYBACK 1. Open the cassette door and insert a tape (see fig. 2). 2. Press the door lightly to shut. 3. To start playback, press 1. 4. Adjust the sound with VOLUME. For personal mono sound listening, insert 3.5mm headphones (preferably type 16 ohms) into the p socket. The built-in speaker will then be disconnected. 5. To fast wind, press 5 or 6. 6. Watch the tape counter display to find the point in the tape you want to listen to. Press 9 to stop fast winding at the selected point. 5 or 6 also allows you to fast cue or review during playback. Using the tape counter to monitor passages, hold down on 5 or 6 and release the key at the passage you want. Tape playback continues from this point. To reset the tape counter display to 000, press the COUNTER RESET switch. 7. You can also adjust TAPE SPEED to find or listen to passages during playback. Set TAPE SPEED to: for high speed playback; 0 for normal speed playback; - for low speed playback. Remember to set TAPE SPEED to 0 for normal playback! 6 RECORDING 8. For brief interruptions, adjust PAUSE ;. To deactivate pause, slide the switch back again. 9. To stop playback, press 9 and the set is switched off. At the end of a tape, the 1 key is automatically released and the set switched off, unless PAUSE ; has been activated. GENERAL INFORMATION ON RECORDING This set is not suited for recording on CHROME (IEC II) or METAL (IEC IV) type cassettes. You should only use NORMAL type cassettes (IEC type I) on which the tabs have not been broken. Altering the VOLUME and TAPE SPEED controls will not affect the recording in progress with the exception of when VOICE ACT is in use and VOLUME is adjusted. At the very beginning and end of the tape, no recording will take place during the 7 seconds when the leader tape passes the recorder heads. Recording is permissible insofar as copyright or other rights of third parties are not infringed.

RECORDING PROTECTING TAPES FROM ACCIDENTAL ERASURE (see fig. 3) To safeguard a particular cassette, simply break out the left tab. Recording on this side is no longer possible. If, however, you wish to record over this side or a tape with open tabs, cover the tabs with a piece of adhesive tape. VOICE ACT (ACTivation) VOICE ACT is a sound level sensor system which enables you to record only when the microphone receives sound at the preset level. The VOLUME wheel acts as the control for the microphone sensor. If sound stops or falls below the volume adjusted for the preset level, recording will pause hence preventing empty recording. To activate: 1. Push VOICE ACT to ON. 2. Turn VOLUME: Anti-clockwise the sound level sensitivity drops and only sound near the microphone will be recorded. Clockwise sound sensitivity is increased. Distant and background sounds will be picked up. Note: When the recording pauses and is resumed automatically according to the preset sound level, the beginning of the track can be lost due to the recording cut off and starting points. BACKGROUND NOISE SUPPRESSION () When in noisy surroundings, to achieve a clearer and better defined voice recording, activate the switch. The system emphasizes the frequency range of the human voice while reducing both the high and low frequencies that usually comprise noise. If you like, use with VOICE ACT during recording. MAKING YOUR RECORDING 1. Open the cassette door and insert a tape (see fig. 2). 2. Press the door lightly to shut. 3. Adjust and VOICE ACT to ON /OFF to suit your recording mode (see VOICE ACT and chapters above). If you do not wish to use the FLAT MIC built-in microphone, insert an external microphone with a 3.5 mm plug into the MIC socket and point to the sound source. Make sure that you direct the microphone away from the set to avoid a howling sound. Once the MIC is connected, the FLAT MIC will not pick up sound. 7 English

English RECORDING To monitor your recording, connect headphones to p. 4. To start recording, press REC 0. The REC indicator lights up. You can also start recording immediately during playback. Press REC 0. 5. For brief interruptions, adjust PAUSE ;. To deactivate pause, slide the switch back again. 6. To stop recording, press 9 and the set is switched off. The REC indicator goes out. At the end of a tape, the 1 and REC keys are automatically released and the set switched off, unless PAUSE ; has been activated. 7. To check your recording, use the 5 or 6 keys (see CASSETTE PLAYBACK). GENERAL INFORMATION MAINTENANCE (see fig.4) Clean the tape heads every month with a cotton bud dipped in alcohol, or by playing through a cleaning tape. Use a soft damp cloth to wipe off dust and dirt. Don't use benzene or corrosives to clean the set. Don't expose the set or cassettes to rain, moisture, sand or to excessive heat e.g. cars parked in direct sunlight. Don't use C-120 tapes. 8 GENERAL INFORMATION TAKE CARE WHEN USING HEADPHONES Hearing Safety: Listen at a moderate volume. Use at high volume can impair your hearing! Traffic Safety: Do not use headphones while driving or cycling as you may cause an accident! Please observe the local regulations regarding the disposal of these packaging materials. Please inquire about local regulations on how to hand in your old set for recycling.
