Notes on the Apple Ecosystem Photos The common name of the software application for Photo Management and Editing that is found on the iphone, ipad and Macintosh Computers. Same name but significantly different on different devices. icloud The Apple cloud-based storage for various files, including Photo files, document files, and Backups for your Apple devices. Similar to other non Apple services/applications such Adobe cloud, Google Drive, Google Photos, Drop Box, Microsoft OneDrive. itunes The apple applications available for Macintosh Computers (installed by default), and on Windows computers. Originally used for management of music library. But also used for iphone/ipad management, installation of software, and backup. And can be used to Sync and/or move photos from iphone or ipad to computer
The Photos Application Cliff notes view Transfer of photos using Apple Ecosystem is going to use Photos applications Anytime you take a picture on iphone or ipad is it going to end up in Photos on your device. On Windows it will end up in a directory that you choose when installing. Apple is focused (?) on you seeing your photos on all your devices. Taking photos on iphone or ipad, first organize in Photos on Device Deleted photos show up in Recently Deleted Album. They remain for 30 days. They can be instantly deleted from there to recover space.

My Photo Stream Photo Stream is using icloud ios: Settings>Photos. Mac: System Preferences>iCloud>Photos. Synchronizes Photos between all Devices. Must be turned on in each device for Sync. Only 30 days or 1000 photos are kept in the Photo Stream. Oldest deleted. Photo Stream starts from the time you turn it on for each device. Older photos are not included. Photos in Photo Stream do not count against your icloud storage. Photo Stream does not show on icloud Web Photo Stream use WiFi, no impact on cell data
Photo Stream the good, the bad, and the ugly (mostly bad) Very confusing as to when and whether photos are saved on other sync d devices On the devices used for making the photograph, the photograph is saved in the camera roll album and not deleted when deleting from Photo Stream. Deleting a photo from Photo Stream will delete it from the Photo Stream on all devices. On the Mac, it is also added to the Photos Library which will not be deleted if deleted from Photo Stream. If you delete photograph from the Camera Roll or other Album, it will be deleted from the Photo Stream. It will remain on the Mac in the Photo Library. You cannot add a photo in Photo Stream to a built in Album such as Camera Roll on another device. You can add it to a album you created.
icloud Photo Library Full Resolution Photographs are stored in icloud Uses optimized storage on your Device Synchronizes photos and edits between devices Works for both Mac and Windows Must be turned on for each device to synchronize Paid Service - 5 GB free, 50 GB for $0.99 per month, 200 GB for $2.99 per month (can be shared with family), 2 TB for $9.99 per month (can be shared with family). Two Options: Optimize Photos (Originals are stored in cloud) & Download Originals Photos are not available off-line.
icloud Photo Library the good, the bad, and the ugly (some of all) icloud Photo Library is not a backup. If you turn off icloud Photo Library, the photos will be deleted in 30 days. To back up your photos, you need to download originals and back up via Time Machine or other backups. If you delete a photo from any device, it will delete the photo from the icloud (and all other devices) You can Export photos from the icloud Photo Library (on Mac Photos app) or you can download photos from icloud Web or you can AirDrop on Apple devices.
Photo Sharing Activate Photo Sharing: (iphone/ipad -- Settings>Accounts&Passwords>iCloud>Photos. Activate Photo Sharing: Mac System Preferences>iCloud>Photos (options). Photo Sharing creates special Albums in Photos app. Share Photos between anyone or yourself. Photos in Photo Sharing Albums do not count against icloud data limits. Photos in Photo Sharing can be imported into your Photos App for permanent retention. A good way to move a few or individuals Photos off of Phone on Desktop for permanent retention.
Wifi and Bluetooth have to be turned on for AirDrop Using AirDrop to move photos You have to set up receiving options Contacts Only or Everyone. ios: Settings>General>AirDrop Mac: Go to Finder, select AirDrop You must be in Bluetooth range
AirDrop on ios Select AirDrop from Share menu Select the Person or Device Photographs will go into Photos on ios and into Downloads directory on MAC.

Import from that directory into Lightroom Use AirDrop to move photos for iphone or ipad to Mac Download directory. Import from that directory into Lightroom.
