Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage or destroy electronic components. All work on electronic assemblies should be performed at a static-safe workstation. Observe proper procedures for performing static-safe work. The E6640A instrument has and Impact cover and face plate panel which cover access to the TRX modules. The face plate panel and Impact cover frame needs to be removed to perform the module addition. The following steps are based on the E6640A being a 2 up system. Remove Face Plate Panel 1. Refer to Figure 1. Use the #1 Phillips screwdriver to loosen the 10 screws (1) on the edge of the face plate panel till they spin freely. Use the T-10 TORX driver to remove the 4 screws (2) in the middle of each TRX module. Then remove the 2 screws (3) on the Controller panel and the Reference panel. Remove the face plate panel. Remove New TRX Module Filler Plate from Dress Panel 2. When adding an additional TRX module the filler panel will need to be removed. Refer to Figure 2. Remove the 2 screws (1) that attach the filler panel (2) to the face plate. Figure 2 Remove Filler Plate from Dress Panel 6 Installation Note E6640-90027
Remove Impact Cover 3. Tilt the main frame up in front by extending the front feet down. 4. Refer to Figure 3. After removing the face plate panel you will remove the 4 screws securing the Controller panel (1) and the 2 securing the Reference panel (2). These can be moved enough to allow the outer Impact cover to slide over them in the next step. Figure 3 Controller and Reference Screws Installation Note E6640-90027 7
5. Refer to Figure 4. Remove the 4 screws (2) on each side of the Impact cover (1). This will disconnect it from the chassis frame. Slide the Impact cover away from the chassis and over the Controller and Reference panels which were disconnected in the previous step. The Controller panel cover panel and Reference panel do not need to be removed with the Impact cover. The Controller panel and the Reference panel may be tilted in and the Impact cover slipped around them. Removal of the Impact cover over the Controller panel requires you to move the Impact cover towards the controller. This will allow you to tilt the Controller sub-panel. See Figure 5. Figure 4 Impact Cover Screws 8 Installation Note E6640-90027
Figure 5 Impact Cover Removal On first production units and later, the Controller panel is mounted on the inside of the Impact cover lip, so the tilting movement shown in the above picture will be unnecessary. Installation Note E6640-90027 9
Remove Module Slot Fillers 6. Refer to Figure 6. To gain access to the 4 Air blockers/ slot fillers you must first remove the 4 Filler Plates from Slot 3 of the main frame. Remove the 2 screws (1) for each Filler Plate. This is where you will install your next TRX Module. Figure 6 Filler Plate Removal 7. Refer to Figure 7. Remove the 4 Air blockers / slot fillers. 10 Installation Note E6640-90027

9. Refer to Figure 10. Slide the new TRX module (1) slowly into the open slot of the main frame. The connector side of the module is slightly heavier and will want to tilt down. Use care in aligning the TRX module to the mainframe backplane board. Do not force! If it feels like it is jamming or miss-aligned remove and re-align then slide back into the main frame. If you bend or break a pin on the main frame backplane board it will need to be sent to an Keysight service center. Figure 10 Slide TRX Module into Main Frame 14 Installation Note E6640-90027
10.Refer to Figure 11. There are two black PXI tabs (1) on the bottom of the module that need to be pushed up to secure the module into the main frame. Use a #1 Phillips screwdriver to secure the TRX to the main frame rails by the tightening the screws (2) on the top and bottom of the module. Torque to 5 in-lb. 11.Refer to Figure 12. Apply the calibration sticker that is included in the kit to the area shown, covering the top middle TRX screw. Figure 12 Calibration Sticker Location 16 Installation Note E6640-90027
Install Impact Cover and Dress Panel 12.Refer to Figure 13. Slide the Impact cover over the Controller and Reference panels. Align the Impact cover to the main frame and install the eight screws (Four on each side of the unit). Installation of the Impact cover over the Controller panel may require you to move the Impact cover to the side for better access and getting the Controller cover over the screw tabs. (This is not required on current production units, which have the controller subpanel mounted behind the impact cover tabs.) Figure 13 Impact Cover Installation Installation Note E6640-90027 17
13.Refer to Figure 14. Use the T-10 TORX driver to install the screws that connect the Controller sub-panel (1) and Reference sub-panel (2) to the Impact cover. Torque all screws to 9inch-pounds. Figure 14 Controller Panel and Reference Panel Screws 18 Installation Note E6640-90027

Enable the New TRX Module (in the XSA configuration file) Enable the New TRX Module (in the XSA configuration file) The new TRX module will not be detected by the E6640A software until it is enabled. The TRX can be enabled in a configuration file (as described here) or by means of a command. (See Enable the New TRX Module (by sending a SCPI command) on page 21.) 1. Open a windows explorer window and go to: E: \Agilent\Instrument\ 2. Locate the XSAconfig.xml file, and edit the file entry for the TRX module number you just installed, changing "False" to "True". 3. Save the file and then shut down and restart the EXM instrument. The XSA configuration file is read by the instrument at power-up. 4. Update the FPGA code to ensure that the installed version of instrument software matches the FPGA code installed in the TRX module. 20 Installation Note E6640-90027
Enable the New TRX Module (by sending a SCPI command) Enable the New TRX Module (by sending a SCPI command) The second method of enabling the new TRX is by means of a SCPI command use SCPI command: 1. Power up the E6640A instrument. It will launch an instance of the xsa software for the current TRX modules installed. 2. Establish a connection to the E6640A to send and receive SCPI commands. Example is Interactive IO: From your computer use the Keysight connection expert and open an interactive IO session. Select Connect and type in: TCPIP0::<IP Address>::5025::SOCKET Using Socket Ports Use sockets 5025, 5125, 5225, and 5325: TRX1, 5025: TCPIP0::<IP Address>::5025::SOCKET TRX2, 5125: TCPIP0::<IP Address>::5125::SOCKET TRX3, 5225: TCPIP0::<IP Address>::5225::SOCKET TRX4, 5325: TCPIP0::<IP Address>::5325::SOCKET Once you establish a connection you would send the following SCPI command. TRX3 is used in this example as the newly installed TRX module. SYSTEM:MODULE:ENABLE? TRX3 --- the response will let you know if the module is enabled or not retrieve TRX3 is enabled or not, return 1 or 0. To enable or disable the TRX module you would send one of the following SCPI commands: SYSTEM:MODULE:ENABLE TRX3, 1 --enable TRX3 SYSTEM:MODULE:ENABLE TRX3, 0 --disable TRX3 After enabling the TRX module, start the xsa application from the desk top. 3. After the xsa software application launches you should see an xsa application window for each TRX module installed. Installation Note E6640-90027 21
