The Ultimate Recording Tool That Combines a High-Quality Master Recorder and AD/DA Converter Has Arrived! DA-3000 TASCAM, a brand that develops high-performance recording equipment and has gained the confidence of many musicians and engineers, has released new DA-3000 model, which fuses a master recorder with an AD/DA converter. This model has compelling features, including the improvement of monitoring conditions when using a DAW and the ability to record master audio sources at high quality. Edited by: Hiromi Watanabe, Photos: Izumi Kawai On the front, in addition to the knobs, switches and other controls, slots are included that can be used to load SDHC and Compact Flash cards and other media. On the back, the numerous connectors include RCA pin and XLR analog inputs and outputs and S/PDIF and AES/EBU digital inputs and outputs and are ready to handle every job. High sound quality has been realized by using meticulously selected parts in the internal circuits and, in particular, eliminating interference between the left and right channels in the output circuit section. RC-10 wireless remote control allows you to conduct many operations, including starting and stopping playback and recording, easily from a distance. Among the readers who use DAW software, I expect that bouncing down to two tracks (writing two-track data) within a computer is common. In professional situations, however, more and more people are transferring the data to a master recorder first. According to Masahito Tobisawa, who tested DA-3000, "When you bounce inside a computer, fine nuances get lost. For this reason, I transfer the data to a master recorder and take that to a mastering studio." As this suggests, the practice of recording once to a master recorder is becoming common in professional situations. Saying that this process is a key to producing music with even better sound is not an overstatement. DA-3000 is an optimal product for recording master audio sources with high audio quality. As recording formats, in addition to PCM at up to 192 khz, this unit also supports high-sampling-rate stereo recording using DSD at up to 5.6 MHz. Since SDHC and Compact Flash cards can be used as recording media, handling data is easy and managing data on a computer is simple. Moreover, making backup copies between media is also possible. In addition, it has RCA pin and XLR analog connectors and S/PDIF and AES/EBU digital connectors. In addition to DSD digital connections also being possible, there are also SDIF-3 input and output connectors built-in, so there is never any trouble with connections. Another sales point is that DA-3000 can also function as an AD/DA converter boasting professional-level sound quality. Very careful attention has been paid to the details. For example, by employing a "dual mono" circuit structure, which incorporates two separate mono circuits, interference between the left and right channels is prevented. By using parts that were carefully selected, noise has been reduced for both the inputs and the outputs. This unit will probably be valued highly as a piece of gear that can improve monitoring conditions in a variety of situations. Moreover, multiple DA-3000 units can be connected and used for multitrack recording by employing the CASCADE connectors. Furthermore, this unit has a built-in clock generator of high precision equivalent to a dedicated unit. It can produce a master clock signal, which is indispensable when operating multiple digital devices at the same time. In these ways, DA-3000 is truly a piece of recording gear with professional specifications. This article is published by SOUND DESIGNER Inc. on Nov. 2013 in Japan. Recording Engineer Masahito Tobisawa checks out DA-3000! "Features are no unwanted coloration is added to the sound and the space can be heard well." ------------------------------------------------------------------ DA-3000 is a product that was developed and manufactured with use by professional engineers in mind. In order to investigate its sound quality, we asked Masahito Tobisawa, a master engineer who has been involved in works by Dragon Ash and others, to try it and carefully examine its sound quality and performance. What did you find appealing about DA-3000 when you tested it this time? Tobisawa: First of all, I was interested in finding out how things would sound if I used this unit as a master clock. In my private studio, I have a Pro Tools Sync I/O that I usually use as a master clock, but this time I input the signal from the DA-3000 word clock out into the Sync I/O word clock in and listened to some stereo mixes. I was surprised by the pretty remarkable change. To put it simply, my impression was that the sound seemed to become cleaner and clearer or that it became a more pleasant sound. The clock generator seems to have been made extremely well. "Masahito Tobisawa : As an engineer, he has worked on projects with Dragon Ash and Mary Sara, for example. He has an established reputation for seamlessly mixing live band sounds and breakbeats to create spatial expressions. In addition, as a sound producer and arranger, he was involved in the album ""Silent melodies"" by the band ""nothing ever lasts,"" creating a world that fused the sensibilities of the artist with his own imagination." The tagline for this unit calls it an "Essential Tool for Recording Engineers." As an engineer, what do you think are the conditions for being "essential"? Tobisawa: A professional must be able to output the same sound in any kind of environment. A professional engineer can be said to be able to provide artists with sound of unchanging quality in any studio they go to. At such times, in my case, the thing that helps me is a pair of headphones. For some people, however, it is probably speakers and it could be a clock generator or a master recorder. So, for that reason, DA-3000 is a device that could help recreate a sound environment that the engineer trusts anywhere. What did you find when you tested it as an AD/DA converter? Tobisawa: I switched back and forth with the Pro Tools 192 I/O during the check and it seemed like there was almost no difference. The quality as an AD/DA converter is high. The sound did not have unwanted coloration and was honest. It felt clean and clear as a whole, so I thought it would be easy to use for sound creation. I do not want to be misunderstood, however. I am not saying, "The sound loses impact." I actually used it to mix down tracks for some loud rock music and found that a feature was that as much as the sound was clear, it was easy to also hear the space. So, mixing was really easy. How was it as a recorder? Tobisawa: The sound was really clear. I tried using everything from 44.1kHz PCM to 5.6MHz DSD. The sound was really good even at 44.1kHz. Even compared to 5.6MHz DSD, I could barely hear the difference. That shows how high the recording audio quality is. I tried recording to an SDHC card, and it was very easy to use. It responded quickly in recording and playback even as I kept changing the sampling rate. If a reader that is an amateur were to use this unit, how would you recommend they use it? Tobisawa: First, an application would be if you "want to create good monitoring conditions in your home." It would also be effective for a person who "wants to make the sound quality of their masters better." I think that bouncing data inside the computer is common among amateurs, but if you use a high-quality recorder like this unit, I believe that you will understand just how much the sound changes when bouncing. By being aware of that difference, you can raise the level of your sound production even more. By connecting a computer USB keyboard to this unit, you can use it to enter preset names and other characters. Compared to the conventional method of using a jog dial to input characters, this makes this task much smoother and is a feature that recognizes the needs of users. Another big feature of the DA-3000 is that it has a sample rate converter (SRC). This function allows it to convert the sampling rate when recording.
