Math 121 Project 4: Graphs Purpose: To review the types of graphs, and use MS Excel to create them from a dataset. Outline: You will be provided with several datasets and will use MS Excel to create graphs. Materials Needed: Data file, MS Excel. Topical Objectives: Bar, line, circle graphs, scatter plot and measures of central tendency. Instructions: Answer the following questions. You will need to use MS Excel to complete this lab. Locate and open the file on the course website (under Project 4). Then follow the instructions below for each graph type. For the first graph you will be provided with a great deal of detail. However, since the procedure is quite repetitive, you will be given less detail as we proceed. Part A: Bar Graph 1. Click on an empty cell. 2. Go to Insert, then Chart. 3. Make sure you have Column highlighted, and press Next. NOTE: You will usually only have one dataset, which means the first is best.
4. Sometimes Excel tries to guess what you want, so you may see values in the Data Range cells. If so, delete them (so we can practice). Delete These
7. Click inside the Category (X) axis labels box. Click on the top most value of your data for Date, and drag the mouse down to highlight the bottom most data value. Again, no heading. 9. Title your graph ( Rainfall at Flamingo Wash for 2004 ), and label the horizontal ( Date ) and vertical ( Rainfall in inches ) axes. 10. Then click on Finish. Part B: Line Graph 1. Click on an empty cell. 2. Go to Insert, then Chart. 3. Make sure you have Line highlighted, and choose your display type. Then press Next. NOTE: A line graph is typically made up of the data points and connected lines.

Title your graph ( Rainfall at Flamingo Wash for 2004 ), and label the horizontal ( Month ) and vertical ( Rainfall in inches ) axes. 10. Click on Finish. Part C: Circle Graph 1. You do not have to have the data in terms of percentages to make a circle graph. Excel will calculate the percentages for you. 2. Click on an empty cell. Go to Insert, then Chart. 3. Make sure you have Pie highlighted, and choose your display type. Then press Next. 7. Click inside the Category Labels box. Click on the top most value of your data for Month, and drag the mouse down to highlight the bottom most data value. Again, no heading. 9. Title your graph ( Rainfall at Flamingo Wash for 2004 ), then click on Finish. 10. By right clicking on the pie, you can go to Format Data Series. Click on the Data Labels tab and check the boxes for Category Name and Percentage to display the values directly on the pie chart. Part D: Scatterplot 1. Click on an empty cell. Go to Insert, then Chart. 2. Make sure you have Scatter highlighted, and choose your display type. NOTE: Typically with a scatter plot you do NOT want to connect the data points with a line. 3. Click Next. 6. Click inside the X Values box. Click on the top most value of your data for Height, and drag the mouse down to highlight the bottom most data value.
7. Click inside the Y Values box and delete the ={1}. Click on the top most value of your data for Weight, and drag the mouse down to highlight the bottom most data value. 9. Title your graph, then click Finish. Adding a trendline: 10. You can fit a linear equation to any scatterplot. 11. Once you have the data in a plot, right click on any data point, and click on Add Trendline. 12. Make sure Linear is highlighted. 13. Click on the Options Tab, and check the box titled Display Equation on Chart and the box titled Display R squared Value on Chart. 14. Click OK. 15. The linear regression line will be added to your chart, along with the equation for that line and correlation coefficient. Part E: Measures of Central Tendency 1. You can use excel to find various measures of central tendency 2. Below, DataRange indicates the range of values where your data is. In our example, DataRange is A4:A18 3. To find the minimum value, click on the yellow cell next to it and type in =Min(A4:A18) 4. For the rest of the questions, you will type in (or click and drag with the mouse) your particular data range instead of typing DataRange 5. To find the maximum value, click on the yellow cell next to it and type in =Max(DataRange) 6. To find the median value, click on the yellow cell next to it and type in =Median(DataRange) 7. To find the average value, click on the yellow cell next to it and type in =Average(DataRange) 8. To find the 25 th percentile, click on the yellow cell next to it and type in =Percentile(DataRange, 0.25) 9. To find the 75 th percentile, click on the yellow cell next to it and type in =Percentile(DataRange, 0.75)
