DaVinci Resolve for Apple Color Users Presented by Ben Brownlee

Exercise 1 - Introduction and a Brief Tour of the UI (6:26 min) Introduction A Brief Tour of the Interface Goodbye Rooms Hello Nodes In this first exercise, we take a brief overview of Resolve. At first glance it looks very different to Apple Color, but when we start to dig a little deeper, most of the tools seem rather similar. The interesting thing is, they don t always work the same way. We will discuss the new possibilities available to us with Resolve. Exercise 2 - System Configuration and User Setup (23:51 min) System Configuration User Setup Create Project Defaults Getting this stage right is crucial to having a stable system and a smooth workflow. We will set-up our main database and users. We then explore our project defaults. Setting up the main preferences we will be using throughout the course and discuss some different workflows. Exercise 3 - Conforming the Timeline (23:32 min) Conforming the Timeline Importing XML & EDL Data Splitting Clips Resolve is rather flexible with how you get your media in to grade. We work through two common scenarios. The first is how bring in an entire edit directly from our NLE using a compatible XML or AAF file. What elements follow through? The second is how we handle a grade where we only have a single media file. In Color, this was a big problem. Using the Scene tab in Resolve things are a lot easier and we learn how to check and fix errors with the automatic process. Exercise 4a - Nodes and Primary Color Correction (27:06 min) Primary Color Correction Intro to Nodes Setting Up Video Scopes Let s start grading. Before touching the colors, we take a quick look at our video scopes and the options we have available to us there. We jump in to the primary color grading tools we have available. There are some old favorites, like the 3-Way Color Wheels and Gain, Gamma, Lift. We also have some powerful new ones, such as the RGB Mixer.

Exercise 4b - Curves and Color Matching (38:30 min) Curves Isolating Hues Matching Across Shots Diving into Curves. There are an extensive number of curves available in Resolve. Some of the most powerful tools are available as part of a single correction, without the need to go into Secondaries. We look at color matching between shots across the sequence. Exercise 5 - Secondary Grades and Qualifiers (28:25 min) Secondary Color Correction Adding Multiple Nodes Qualifiers Creating Keys Primary color correction just isn t going to cut it, so let s build on our grade. We check out Auto Color, with some of its strengths and weaknesses. There are several types of Nodes available and we look at Serial Nodes first. To isolate skin, we explore the Qualifier tab. We have different Keyers to generate mattes. Exercise 6a - Windows and Combining Mattes & Masks (27:38 min) Windows and Vignettes Building Multiple Shapes Combining Mattes and Masks Qualifiers are not the only way of isolating areas in the image. In this tutorial we look at Windows, the equivalent of Color s vignettes. The possibilities with Windows run a lot deeper than simple vignettes, and we will see how to create complex shapes. We also combine Windows and Qualifiers to ensure that we only correct the elements we want. Exercise 6b - Parallel and Mixer Nodes (23:22 min) Using External Mattes Parallel & Mixer Nodes Key Tab Sometimes we need to use more complex animated shapes in our grade. This can be easier to create in another application and bring in to Resolve. We work on external mattes and see how we can adjust them to fit our needs. When we mix layers for Secondary correction, we have a number of different Node types available. We look now at Parallel and Layer Mixer Nodes and the advantages they offer.

Exercise 7 - Animating Grades and Motion Tracking (25:47 min) Animating Grades Dynamics Timeline Motion Tracking in Resolve Animating grades. In Resolve, support for keyframing is robust but can be a bit prickly. There are different options when we need to animate our grade, and we explore the Dymanic Timeline in this exercise. We build up various effects via keyframes, and make more complex masks. All animated, of course. To save time, we also work extensively with Resolve s built in motion tracker and find out how to make adjustments where we need to. Exercise 8 - Saving Grades and Versioning (29:26 min) Saving Grades Memories and Still Stores Working with Groups and Multiple Versions Here comes the most important bit. Reusing grades throughout the project and sessions. Resolve is very smart about handling new cuts of the timeline imported from your NLE. We explore Versions, which are a great way to experiment with different looks. How do we get these looks to propagate throughout the timeline, without too much work? We also look at how we can build a library of grades and looks. Exercise 9 - Outputting and Roundtripping with an NLE (13:33 min) Outputting Rendering from Resolve Roundtripping with an NLE It s looking good. So we need to get it out. There are more options here again and this leads a discussion of the best workflow for a particular job. In the end, we opt for a roundtrip workflow using XML. How does this impact our overall way of working? Exercise 10 - Final Tricks and Wrap-up (21:00 min) Grading the Entire Timeline Blur & Mist Final Wrap-up There are still a few questions hanging. We talk about some of the main issues you may face and simple troubleshooting techniques. There is also time to look at Blur & Mist and Presets. We discuss some possible ideas for small grading elements, which you can save and reuse in other projects.
