Technologies to Improve Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Activities R&D Supports the D&WM Mission at CNL Developing and assessing technologies to improve decommissioning and environmental remediation activities, and move those with promise to the prototype stage. New detector technology can detect alpha-emitting nuclides in wet soil. Today wet soil is sampled, taken to the lab, dried out and analyzed before you know if it is contaminated. New detector can detect alpha contamination in wet soil in the field. We have identified a compound with considerably higher IX capability than standard sorbents discussed in literature.

Nuclear Cyber Security Cyber Security of Industrial Control Systems is a Growing Concern in All Industries Demand is high for modern, technologybased solutions to cyber security risk Most solution providers are focused on conventional hacking and data theft Cyber security of industrial control systems used in nuclear power plants and other critical energy infrastructure, as well as non-nuclear process plants, is in its infancy Utilizing a new nuclear cybersecurity testing facility, CNL will develop solutions to industrial control cyber intrusion, including detection and mitigation Commercialize and deploy a nuclear industrial control cyber intrusion detection and mitigation system by 2022

Cyber Research Facility Underpinning cyber security program is a facility to support evidence-based research for I&C systems Multi-layered defensive architecture - safety critical, and process control including interfaces to business systems Realtime process control capability (e.g., level, flow, pressure) Industrial network protocols OPC, MODBUS, Fieldbus, ProfiNet Installation and commissioning in progress; operational in 2018

Small Modular Reactors CNL Vision is to be a Recognized Hub for SMRs, Where Multiple Vendor- Supported Prototypes are Built and Tested Small Modular Reactors potentially have a lowerentry-to-market cost; their ability to compete economically remains to be proven Risks to SMR success include Technical Risk Regulatory Risk Financial Risk The CNL site provides a unique combination of technical capabilities, together with a CNSC license, that are essential to reducing the technical, regulatory, and financial risks associated with SMRs CNL Issued an SMR Request for Expressions of Interest in June Demonstrate the commercial viability of the small modular reactor by 2026

SMR Request for Expressions of Interest Concluded August 9 Understand vendor readiness: financial, technical, etc. Understand vendor needs in R&D facilities, expertise and services Obtain information to guide the development of our SMR program CNL to begin generic siting activities this year Engage with broader community of governments, funders, host locations and potential end-users Understand the potential opportunities for new prototype and demonstration reactors Measure respondent interest in constructing a prototype or demonstration reactor on a CNL site
