Overview The StorageWorks San Switch 2/8-EL is the next generation entry level 8 port fibre channel SAN fabric switch featuring 2Gb transfer speed and the optional ability to trunk or aggregate the throughput of up to four inter switch ports.. The SAN Switch 2/8-EL will scale to a maximum fabric configuration of 4 switches (any combination of 1Gb/s and/or 2Gb/s with the appropriate firmware). It also features the new optional SFP (small form factor pluggable) connectors which allow for higher port density then was available using GBICs. The higher speed coupled with the optional trunking feature will allow users to install cost effective small SANs. The increased performance of these switches is also appropriate where high throughput needs exist such as video streaming, intensive on-line transaction processing (OLTP), and medical imaging. The SAN Switch 2/8-EL combines 1 Gbit/s and 2 Gbit/s fibre channel throughput with new features that greatly enhance switch operation. Models StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/8-EL 258707-B21 StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/16 Upgrade Kit 288162-B21 ZBun 289217-001 Feature List Eight High Performance auto-sensing 1 and 2 Gb/s ports. May be optionally programmed to a fixed 1 Gb/s or 2 Gb/s speed if desired. Universal, self-configuring ports (F, FL, E) with new industry-standard removable Small Form Factor Pluggable optical transceivers (SFP) (ordered separately). 4 Switch SAN support with an upgrade option to full 20 switch support Fully non-blocking for all 8 ports Full 16 Gb/s switching capacity for uncongested fully sustained, 2 Gb/s full duplex throughput. One fixed power supply. N+1 redundant fans. Optional Hot pluggable SFP optical transceivers. Rack optimized design: 1U (1.75") tall for high density rack installations SAN Switch 2/8-EL Customer benefits Twice the potential throughput compared to today's fabric switches: 2 Gb/s vs. 1 Gb/s. (2 Gb controllers and HBAs required for 2 Gb/s end-to-end performance.) Unprecedented performance with optional Inter-Switch Link (ISL) Trunking technology combines up to four ISLs between a pair of 2 Gb switches into a single, logical high-speed trunk running at up to 8 Gb/s. Provides investment protection for presently installed 1 Gb SAN switches**. Please refer to SAN Design Guide Supplemental Tables for 1 Gb/s switch interoperability guidelines. ** NOTE: - The discontinued Compaq Fibre Channel 8/16 switches will not interoperate with 2 Gb/s switches - 2 Gb switch will operate at a 1 Gb performance level if connected to 1 Gb external connections and 1 Gb HBAs Configuration Support - SAN Switch 2/8-EL will interoperate with SAN Switch 1/x running the firmware version defined in the SAN Design Guide Support Tables http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/san/documentation.html. Product Highlights 8 non-blocking ports Eight auto-sensing 1 Gb/s and 2 Gb/s universal, self-configuring ports (F, FL, E). Can be programmed to fixed 1 Gbps or 2 Gbps speed. Full 16 Gbps switching capacity for uncongested fully sustained, 2 Gbps full duplex throughput. High-availability features N+1 Redundant cooling fans 1 Fixed power supply Enhanced Fault Detection Logic. Parity protection on all data paths and for system memory Advanced Services Optional ISL Trunking Hardware Enforced Zoning Frame Filtering End-to-End Performance Analysis Software Components, Standard Frame Filtering (standard) An ASIC based capability in the 2 Gb family of switches that enables new applications and features. The switch now has the ability to "view" the first 64 bytes of the Fibre Channel frame. At this time, Frame Filtering enables advanced capabilities such as Advanced Zoning and Advanced Performance Monitoring. Advanced Zoning (standard) In the 2 Gb generation of switches, WWN Zoning and Access Control are enforced by hardware providing the same simple administration that was previously only enforced with software. Administrators can organize a physical fabric into logical groups and prevent unauthorized access by devices outside the Zone. Software Components, Optional Watch (optional) 262864-B21 Watch enables each switch to monitor the SAN for potential faults-and automatically alert network managers to problems before they become failures. Watch tracks a variety of SAN fabric elements, events, and counters. Monitoring fabric-wide events, ports, SFPs, and environmental parameters permits early fault detection and isolation as well as performance measurement. Each switch in the SAN needs its' own Watch license. ISL Trunking (optional) 262872-B21 High performance enhanced trunking: Optional license logically groups up to four E-ports to provide a high bandwidth trunk between two switches. Each 2 G/s switch needs its own license. The switch operating system views the trunk as a single, high bandwidth resource (up to 8 Gb/s) when routing connections between switches. Connections are loadbalanced across the individual links, which comprise the logical trunk group. Each 8-port switch can have a total of two separate 4-port trunk groups. Performance Monitoring (optional) 262870-B21 This enabling technology provides the ability to monitor and watch specific fabric metrics from a SID (Source ID) to a DID (Destination ID), creating a method to be able to fine-tune and scale your fabric more efficiently. Performance Monitoring also allows the ability to have an early warning detection of hot-spots within the fabric providing a powerful tool for maintaining overall balanced performance. Software Performance Bundle (optional) 262874-B21 Option includes bundled license for ISL Trunking, Advanced Performance Monitor, and Watch. Extended (optional) 262868-B21 Extends all of the scalability, reliability, and performance benefits of Fibre Channel Storage Area Networks (SANs) beyond the native 10 km distance specified by the Fibre Channel standard. Required with future use of Very Long Distance SFPs and/or wavelength division multiplexing (WDM or DWDM). DA - 11362 Worldwide Version 10 August 25, 2003 Page 2
