General 3D joint Welcome to IDEA StatiCa tutorial. We will show how to use software IDEA StatiCa 8 to model, design and check a structural steel joint, example being a general 3D joint. 1 New project Let s launch IDEA StatiCa and select application Connection. 1

We create a new project by clicking New. Wizard window is opened. We select Frame 3D topology. _ 2

2 Geometry We start by defining the Geometry. Three beams were automatically generated. We create a general cross section for the column member, add two more beams and modify properties of all the members. Member SL Set the member length to 600 mm and click Insert new item in the Properties tab. Here we go to Welded, Composed tab and click on General steel cross-section. 3

General cross-section editor opens and we start composing the column member cross-section by selecting the I sections and HEB600 in the Cross-section Navigator. Then we continue by clicking on the icon Add new entity and selecting the Sections T (I-cut). The Rolled T (I-cut) window opens and we edit the shape to HEB500. Then we make a copy of this entity by clicking Copy icon in the upper ribbon. 4

Next we move and rotate the added T-shaped entities to complete the whole cross-section by editing the Cross-section components tab as in the figure below. For further information see the FAQ section How to create and use custom cross-section in the IDEA StatiCa Resources website. 5

Member B1 We set the cross-section to HEB280 from the library and change the Pitch angle to 6. Member B2 We set the cross-section to HEB180 from the library and change the Direction to 90 and Rotation to 6. 6

Member M4 We add a new member by clicking Add new entity, set its cross-section to HEB280 and change the Direction to 180 and Pitch to 6. Member M5 We add another member, set its cross-section to L100X8, change Model type to N-Vy-Vz and change the Pitch to -40. 7

3 Load effects Let s continue with Load effects. One load effect was automatically added by the wizard. We fill the table with previously calculated forces as in the figure and change the position of forces on member B2 to Bolts, which is calculated to be 243 mm. For further information see the FAQ section How to define load position in the IDEA StatiCa Resources website. 8

4 Design Next step is the Design. To model connection between members, we click on the Add button and select a desired operation to finish the joint modelling. Cut of member First, we select the Cut of member operation to lengthen the column and we set its parameters as in the figure. End plate Next, we add the end plate, select the default bolt grade as 8.8 and default size to M20 and adjust all the properties as in the figure to define the proper size of plates, accurate position of bolts and their number and weld s leg size and type. 9

10

Then we copy the end plate operation also for the member B1 by clicking Copy in the upper ribbon and change some of its parameters. 11

Fin plate We continue with adding a fin plate operation as shown below. 12

Gusset plate We finish the design by adding a gusset plate operation and set the parameters as in the figure. 13

Finally, we edit the gusset plate shape by clicking on Editor and selecting the Bevel operation. Now we can see the whole joint created as in the picture below. 14

5 Check of a structural steel joint Now we move to the Check section of the Navigator. We start nonlinear analysis by clicking Calculate in the ribbon. Analysis model is automatically generated, calculation is performed and we can check results. As default, we see the overall model checked and displayed according to traffic lights to quickly recognise, whether any part of the joint is safe or not. 15

We activate Equivalent stress, Bolt forces, Mesh and Deformed from the ribbon to get a full picture of what is happening in the joint. Values of bolt checks and forces together with check equations are displayed in the table Bolts, equally there is a tab for welds etc. 16

6 Report The final step of a project is to generate the Report. IDEA StatiCa offers three types of reports one line, one page and detailed. We will choose the Detailed report that contains materials, geometry, all checks. We can also add a bill of material and theoretical background to explain underlying methods and references to selected design code. 17

Structural steel joint was modelled, designed and checked. Thank you for using IDEA StatiCa Connection! 18
