Tronxy X5S Bed Upgrades Three Upgrades eeded Insulation of Heat Bed Install offboard power to drive the Increase Voltage driving the from 12Vdc to 20 Vdc BED Insulation I Installed the insulation scheme described by DIY3DTECH; It works GREAT and was very low cost. ink: http:diy3dtech.comtagx5s Install Power to drive the You must add a high current control board (ebay See parts ist) This is required as we will be increasing the Bed Voltage ABOVE the 12VDC level available on the Control Board. The Heat bed interconnect scheme on the Control Board are insufficient for higher power levels (Connections are known to overheat and unsolder at high current levels) Installed a EW POWER SUPPY to increase the Bed voltage from 12 Vdc (stock) to 21 VDC. Two upgrade options are available: 1. Add a Second 2024VDC power supply and connect it to just the This approach has been well discussed by others and is not detailed here. 2. Add a Second 812 VDC (at least 20 AMP) I SERIES with the existing 12VDC power supply to run the Heat Bed I added a 2 nd, 8.5 Volt supply. This is the power supply scheme detailed in this guide RESUTS ACHIEVED: Excellent! Takes only 3 Minutes to go from Room Temp to 65 ⁰C Takes only 4 Minutes to go from Room Temp to 80 ⁰C 20180307 UPDATE OTE: This document has been updated to more completely explain Series Power Supply approach. I trust this will answer those with questions! 2
HEATBED 1.4 Ω How do SERIES Power Supplies Work? Just like a multicell flashlight, power sources may be connected in series to increase the total available voltage Flashlight Schematic How does the heatbed SeriesPower Supply method work? Just like the flashlight example, a 2 nd power supply may be connected in series with the existing 12 VDC power supply to increase the total available voltage to the heatbed. Bulb OOFF Switch Cell #1 (1.5 V Battery) = EW POWER SUPPY (6.58.5 VDC, 40A) AC I Power Switch 20.5 V to Heat Bed Cell #2 (1.5 V Battery) Cell #3 (1.5 V Battery) (STOCK 12 VDC, 30A) AC I 12 V to control board, steppers & hot end Voltage across the lamp (V ) is V = Cell#1 Cell#2 Cell#3 V = 1.5 1.5 1.5 V = 4.5v Why use a series power supply? A series connected 812VDC power supply is just a good as a single 24 VDC power supply and may be lower cost solution to a heatbed upgrade CAUTIO: Be sure to use adequate gauge wire (12 Ga Minimum) and fully tighten all wire lugs and terminal screws for all power wiring, no mater what power supplies you add! 3
HEATBED 1.4 Ω How is Power Delivered and Shared using a Series Power Supply? Basic Electrical Math _Amps = _Volts _Ohms _Watts = (_Amps 2 ) x _Ohms Alternately, _Watts = (_Amps) x _Volts Upgrade Summary It is seen that when using a nominal heatbed resistance of 1.4 ohms, the total heat bed power using the stock 12VDC power source is limited to about 100 watts. After increasing the power source from 12VDC to about 20.5VDC it is seen that the total heatbed power increases to about 300 watts. The table below shows how the heatbed power is shared between the stock power supply () and the added, 8.5 VDC power supply (). The stock 12VDC power supply has enough capacity to power the steppers and hot end even after increasing the overall heatbed power to 300 watts. = EW POWER SUPPY (6.58.5 VDC, 40A) AC I (STOCK 12 VDC, 30A) AC I Power Switch 12 V to control board, steppers & hot end 20.5 V to Heat Bed Power Supply Configuration Volts Volts Resistance (ohms) Total Headbed Volts Total Head Bed Amps Total Headbed Power (Watts) Amps Amps Watts Watts UMODIFIED STOCK COFIGURATIO WITH SERIES POWER SUPPY UPGRADE 12 A 1.4 12 8.6 102.9 8.6 A 102.9 A 12 8.5 1.4 20.5 14.6 300.2 14.6 14.6 175.7 124.5 POWER SUPPY SPECS: Stock Power Rating: 12VDC @ 30 AMPS, Added Supply Rating: 6.58.5VDC @ 40 AMPS ote: Voltage drops in wiring and across switch are fairly small and therefore, are ignored in the above calculations. 4
