3 Welcome to the Quick Guide series File and Transfer This guide will help you understand file extensions and file transfer problems. FILE EXTENSIONS: are labels used to indicate which specific program created the file..mod.mp4.avi.mov.m2ts.wmv.vf.mxf (MPG) A Specific file type only used by Canon; but is actually an MPEG-2 format. However; it may need converting with MPEG Streamclip as some programs will not recognise the extension. (MPEG-4) One of the most commonly used video audio formats used today. (Audio Video Interleaved) One of the very first standard definition video audio file types. (Apple Quick Time) One of the first movie formats originally only used by Apple. It is program. dependant and can only be viewed if a Quick Time Player is installed. A relatively new high definition format. (Graphics Interchange Format) is a compressed image file format to keep smaller files. Good for animated images and the internet. (BitMaP) Originally a Windows format that is professionally used for printing but uses large files. (Portable Network Graphics) A lossless format with a good compression rate. Used by web developers because it is ideal for creating transparent backgrounds. (Joint Photographic Experts Group) Jpeg is the most popular format for high volume image storage. A lossy format with small file sizes. (Tag Image File Format) A common file format used in graphic design. Tiff files are lossless but have large files..indd.pdf.ai.sfx (InDesign Document) A layered layout format that is program dependant. Indd files are linked files that only save data not files. The file format is a canon specific mpg file format called.mod. This format must be converted before it will import into Final Cut on the Mac in F9. It will import without conversion on Movie Studio on the PC in F11. Converting.MOD files with MPEG Streamclip 1. Place the SD card in the reader 2. Locate the required files and keep the folder open. 3. Find the Applications folder and open the MPEG Streamclip program. [Icon shown above] [Step 1] 4. In MPEG Streamclip: go to the Menu>List> Batch List [Step 2]. Select all the MOD and MOI files and drag them on to the Batch List. 5. Set the Destination in the dialogue box. 6. [Step 3] Set the Format to Apple Motion JPGA, Select 1024x574 (widescreen16:9) > To Batch > OK. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 The Nikon D5200 and D5100 camera files are transferred using a data transfer cable. The Card slots are taped as they break very easy so DO NOT REMOVE the cards. Before you transfer images or movies from the Nikon to a computer, make sure the camera is turned off! Specialist Nikon software is used to transfer files from the D5100. Nikon Transfer 2, View NX 2, and Movie Editor 2 software is on all Mac computers in F9.
5 1. Plug the supplied [mini 8] lead into the camera and the [USB] into the Mac computer. 2. Turn on the camera. The computer should automatically recognize the hardware and open Nikon Transfer 2 software when the camera is turned on. NB: If the computer does not recognize the software go to Finder, from the left side panel open applications and then find and open View NX 2 The icon will appear at the bottom of the screen as shown below. 3. (Please ask the Technician for the card reader.) When the P2 reader is connected to the computer, it should automatically detect the software and will appear as an icon on screen. Click the icon then > Contents This will reveal the following screen Notes All elements of footage are recorded and stored separately e.g. video, audio, clip etc. Audio is not locked to the Video, unlike consumer DV camcorders When recording audio, the DVCPRO automatically sets up for 4.0 stereo (Quadraphonic sound). So when you download the audio files there will be four sound files. Depending on your settings there may be one, two or four working audio files (channels). Only HD offers 4.0 stereo
6 DV Tape Transfer: Tape transfer is by 9-pin to 4pin- IEEE 1394 Interface cable streaming using a Mac computer. Streaming with tape is done in real-time. Here in the Media department we have 4 different voice recorders USB download Real-time download SD card download SD card download Most of the voice recorders are straight forward file drag and drop except the real-time recorders. To download from a real-time recorder you will need a 3.5mm audio cable. (see the Technician) 1. Plug one end of the cable into the Ear headphone socket of the voice recorder 2. Plug the other end of the cable in to the Mic [Pink] socket on the computer. 3. Open the program Adobe Audition; select File>New>Record button 4. Then turn on the recording 5.
