This manual explains the steps for unpacking, mounting and basic installation before using the MUTOH Full-color inkjet printer VJ-68. This manual is intended for owners, installers, and users of this product. Understand the contents and instructions in this manual before installing this product. Unpacking boxes Procedures for unpacking boxes are explained. This product is packaged separately, divided into the printer and the stand. CAUTION Make sure to unpack this product with four persons or more. While taking out the printer from the box, make sure to remove the vinyl sheet and hold the handles on the printer side. If the printer is lifted with the vinyl sheet attached, there is a possibility that the printer might slip from your hands and be damaged. Confirming bundled items After unpacking, please confirm that the product has not damaged and no components are missing. If any items are damaged or missing, contact MUTOH local dealer.. Unpacking stand box Unpack the stand box in accordance with the following steps.. Carry the box to where you will unpack it.. Open the box and take out the components. VJ68E-I-00

Assembling This section explains how to assemble the printer.. Remove the two transfer stays and fasten the printer to the stand using eight butterfly screws.. Fasten the connector bar to the left stand in the same way as in Step. CAUTION Four or more people are required to assemble this printer. Front. Procedure for assembling the stand Follow the procedure below to assemble the stand.. Follow the procedure below to assemble the right stand. a. Attach the right leg part to the right base part so that four screw holes in the base part are at the front. Stand (Left) Connector bar Hexagon socket head cap screws 5. Attach the waste fluid tank holder to the right stand using four screws. b. Tighten two hexagon socket head cap screws using a hexagonal wrench. b. Attach the waste fluid tube to the tank. Shake the stand to make sure that each part is firmly attached.. Attaching the stand Follow the procedure below to attach the stand to the printer.. Detaching fastening materials This product has fastening materials in the place shown below. Detach all protective materials in accordance with the following steps. Front. Remove all tapes from each cover. Leg part (Left) Base part Butterfly screws c. Insert the waste fluid sensor cable into the connector on the bottom of the printer. Front a. Place the waste fluid tank in the waste fluid tank holder. Leg part (Right) Base part Transfer stays Stand. Follow the procedure below to attach the waste fluid tank. Insert the two transfer stays into the right and left transfer brackets, lift the printer with four or more people and place it on the stand.. Fasten the connector bar to the right stand using two hexagon socket head cap screws. Attach the connector bar with the groove facing the rear as shown below.. Open the front cover, then remove a screw from the head unit fastening material (metal plate) and remove the material. Head unit Screw Head unit fastening material (metal plate). Installation Procedures and environment for installing this product are explained.. Installation environment Install this product to the appropriate place with reference to the following. WARNING Do not install the printer in the following places where there is a possibility that the printer may be damaged or might fall or be fallen by chance. On a shaky stand Slanting location Places where vibration of other machines etc. is transmitted. Do not stamp on the printer or do not place heavy things on top of it. The printer may be damaged or might fall or be fallen by chance. Cover the printer with blanket and cloth like tablecloth and do not close the vent. If the vent is closed, the printer could accumulate heat inside and may cause fire. Do not install the printer in a location that has high humidity or is dusty. It could lead to electric shock and fire... Installation environmental condition Select an installation location in accordance with the table below. There is a possibility that the print quality will be affected. Places where temperature or humidity may rapidly change, even though within the required conditions. Places that receive direct sunlight, increased illumination or direct air, for example from an air conditioner. To keep the temperature and humidity constant, install this product in a location where the air condition is adjustable... Installation space Install on a level floor which meets the following condition. It has enough strength to support the weight of the printer and the stand. For the weight of the printer and the stand, refer to the Operation Manual. Adjuster Stand a a = 650 mm b =,000 mm c =,000 mm d =,000 mm f Spirit level Adjuster b e =,550 mm f =,800 mm g =,700 mm. Installation procedure Install this product to the installation place in accordance with the list shown below.. Carry the printer to the installation place.. Turn the following adjusters in the direction as shown below to prevent the printer from moving. Stands: adjusters (). Set the spirit level on the right and left platens and adjust so that the printer stays flat.. Confirm that the waste fluid valve is closed. c d e g 5 Connecting the power cable This section explains how to connect the power cable. WARNING Make sure that the included power cable is used. If other power cables are used, it may cause an electric shock or fire. Do not use a damaged power cable. It may cause an electric shock or fire. Follow the steps below to connect the power cable.. Confirm that the product is turned OFF. If the [Power] key is pressed, the product is turned ON. Press the key again, and turn OFF the power.. Connect the power cables (x ) to the AC inlets (x ) on the right of the product. AC inlet Power cable. Correctly insert the power cable plug into the power socket. To use the two power cables plugged in the inlets, a total capacity of 7 A or over is required. If the power source cannot supply the required capacity, plug the two power cables in the different power sources respectively. Power cable Waste fluid valve VJ68E-I-00

6 Turning the power ON/OFF This section explains how to turn ON/OFF the printer. 6. Turning the power ON Follow the procedure below to turn ON the printer.. Press the [Power] key on the operation panel to turn ON the printer.. Clean the cleaning wiper unit. Operation Manual "6... Cleaning the cleaning wiper unit" 5. Clean around the print head. Operation Manual "6... Cleaning around the print head" TIP Press the [Cancel] key if cleaning the cleaning wiper unit and around the print head is not performed. 6. After cleaning is completed, press the [Enter] key on the operation panel. 7 Installing the ink packs This section explains how to install ink packs. Follow the steps below to install ink packs.. Turn ON the product. The product starts initial operation. After the initial operation is complete, "Start Ink Charge -> E" is displayed on the operation panel.. Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel. The Power lamp on the operation panel lights up in green. The printer starts initial operation. When the initial operation is complete, the printer enters normal status. 6. Turning the power OFF Follow the procedure below to turn OFF the printer.. Regarding the operating condition of the printer, confirm the following. Printing or other operations are not in progress. The operation panel is in normal status. The head height adjustment lever is lowered.. Press the [Power] key on the operation panel to turn OFF the printer. If the operation panel is in the following status, the power is ON. The [Power] key is pressed in. The Power lamp lights up in green. Press the key once again and turn OFF the power. "CR Mainte.: Start" is displayed on the operation panel.. Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel. The cleaning wiper returns to its original position. The print head returns to its original position. The printer starts operating to turn the power OFF. The operation panel displays "Power Off". If the head height adjustment lever is raised, the operation panel displays "Change Head Gap Low". Lower the head height adjustment lever. Operation Manual "..5. When returning the print head to the original position" All the lamps on the operation panel and the LCD monitor are turned OFF. The printer automatically turns the power OFF. If there is a problem during turning OFF operation, a message is displayed on the operation panel and the printer may stop operating. If operation stops, refer to Operation Manual "7 Troubleshooting" and deal with the problem. After turning OFF the printer, wait for 0 seconds or longer to turn it ON again. "Insert Cleaning Cart." is displayed on the operation panel.. Take out the cleaning fluid S/C cards and cleaning packs (8 each) from the bag.. In sert the cleaning fluid S/C cards (8 count) oneby-one into the S/C card slots (8 locations). S/C card slots are located on both the left and right sides of the rear of the printer. Insert the S/C card all the way to the end of the slot. a. Left-rear side of the printer Cleaning fluid S/C card b. Right-rear side of the printer Cleaning fluid S/C card 5. Insert the cleaning fluid packs ( count) one-byone into the ink pack slots ( locations) on the left side of the rear of the printer. a. Pull out the ink pack slot. S/C card slot S/C card slot Ink pack slot b. Shake the cleaning fluid pack two to three times gently before inserting it into the ink pack slot. Maintenance starts. The print head moves to the left. The cleaning wiper raises. "CR Maintenance: End" is displayed on the operation panel. Cleaning fluid pack Ink pack slot (Continue to next) 5 VJ68E-I-00

(Cont'd) c. Re-insert the ink pack slot. Insert the ink pack slot all the way to the end of the slot. 9. Press the [Enter] key on the operation panel. c. Following the same procedure as in steps a to c, install the remaining ink packs (K: pack, C: packs) into the ink pack slots. Ink packs are specified depending on the colors of the ink pack. Ink pack slot 6. Following the same procedure as in step 5, insert the cleaning fluid packs ( count) one-by-one into the ink pack slots ( locations) on the right side of the rear of the printer. When you have installed all of the cleaning fluid packs, "During Washing" is displayed on the operation panel and the printer starts filling cleaning fluid. After the cleaning fluid is filled, "Remove Cartridges" is displayed on the operation panel. 7. Remove all of the cleaning fluid S/C cards. "Insert InkCartridges" is displayed on the operation panel. 0. Remove the ink S/C cards and ink packs (8 each) from the bag.. Insert the ink S/C cards (8 count) one-by-one into the S/C card slots (8 locations). Ink S/C cards are specified depending on the colors of the ink pack. Match the mark on each slot with the color of the ink pack. Insert the S/C card all the way to the end of the slot. a. Left-rear side of the printer 5 Ink pack Ink pack slot K Ink pack slot C Ink pack slot C. Following the same procedure as in step, insert the ink packs (M, Y: each) into the ink pack slots (M, Y: locations each) on the right side of the rear of the printer. Ink packs are specified depending on the colors of the ink pack. Match the mark on each slot with the color of the ink pack. Cleaning fluid S/C card 8. Remove all the cleaning fluid packs. a. Pull out the ink pack slot. Cleaning fluid pack Ink pack slot b. Remove the cleaning fluid pack from the ink pack slot. Ink pack slot When you have removed all of the cleaning fluid packs, "During Washing" is displayed on the operation panel and the printer starts head cleaning. After the Head washing is complete, "Wash retry? No" is displayed on the operation panel. When cleaning the print head again before ink filling, select "Yes" to press [+] key or [-] key on the operation panel. Then press [Enter] key and clean the print head. Insert the ink packs (K, C: each) one-by-one into the ink pack slots (K, C: locations each) on the left side of the rear of the printer. The Steps a to c for installing ink pack K (slot K) is described below. a. Shake the ink pack two to three times gently before inserting it into ink pack slot K. Ink pack K b. Re-insert ink pack slot K. S/C card slot C 5 S/C card slot C S/C card slot Y 5 S/C card slot Y Ink pack slot K Insert the ink pack slot all the way to the end of the slot. 5 Ink S/C card Ink pack slot M Ink pack slot M 5 Ink pack slot Y 5 Ink pack slot Y "Ink Refill **%" is displayed on the operation panel and ink replenishment starts. The ink replenishment takes about minutes. Ink filling operation and pause operation are repeated during the ink replenishment. When "00%" is displayed, the ink replenishment is complete. Do not perform the following operations during ink filling. Do not turn the printer OFF. Do not unplug the power cable. Do not open the front cover. Do not raise the media loading lever. After the ink replenishment is complete, "Media End" is displayed on the operation panel. If the Nozzle check printing is performed immediately after the ink replenishment is complete, the following results may occur. Printed line becomes blurred. Printing partially. In such cases, follow the Operation Manual "6.. Head cleaning" and charge a small amount of ink. Then, check the printing result. If there is no improvement in the print result even after refilling a small amount of ink, leave the printer for one hour or more, and refill a small amount of ink again. If there is still no improvement, contact MUTOH local dealer. Ink pack slot K VJ68E-I-00 6

8 Loading the roll media This section describes how to load roll media. (Cont'd) 7. Raise the media loading lever. When loading roll media, set each side of the media at least 5 mm away from the edges of the pressurizing roller. Failing to do so may cause the media to slip or wrinkle while being printed on. Place the roll media in the center of the printer. Follow the steps below to load roll media.. Loosen the fixing levers of the right and left roll media holders, and stretch the levers wider than the width of the roll media. Media loading lever 5mm 5mm "Lever Up" is displayed on the operation panel. 8. Open the front cover. 5mm 5mm Pressurizing roller holder (Left) holder (Right). If the distance between the edge of the roll media and the pressurizing roller is less than 5 mm, follow the procedure below to adjust the position of the roll media. Fixing levers Front cover a. Loosen the fixing levers of the right and left roll media holders, and move the roll media to the right or left. 9. Insert the roll media into the media feed slot.. Tighten the left roll media holder. b. After moving the roll media, tighten the fixing levers. Be sure to press the roll media holders against the printer while locking them. Media feed slot holder (Left) Fixing lever 0. Pull the roll media approximately m out of the media feed slot, which is inside the front cover.. Attach the roll media to the left roll media holder. holder (Left). Attach the right roll media holder to the roll media and tighten the fixing lever. While holding the front end of the roll media, wind the media back for a short distance by turning the flanges of the roll media holders so that the media is not slack or slanted. If you release your grip on the roll media while it is being wound, the media may slip off the media feed slot and fall behind the printer. holder (Right) holder (Left) holder (Right) Media loading lever When applying pressure on the media, lower the media loading lever further. Make sure that the right end of the roll media does not go beyond the media loading mark. It may affect print quality. Fixing lever 5. Loosen the fixing levers of the right and left roll media holders, slide the roll media to the center and tighten the levers. Media loading mark Fixing levers Media loading lever. Close the front cover. 6. Turn the printer ON. The printer starts initial operation. "Media End" is displayed on the operation panel. 7 Front cover VJ68E-I-00

9 Checking printing conditions Check the condition of the print head after the ink replenishment.. Turn ON the printer and load the roll media. 8 Loading the roll media. Confirm that the printer functions normally.. Press the [<] key on the operation panel for two seconds or more. Nozzle check printing starts.. Check the sample print for blurred or missing parts in the check pattern. 6. Head cleaning starts. If one time of head cleaning was not enough to remove blurred or missing parts in the check pattern, perform powerful cleaning. If those problems above were not improved after a few times of head cleaning, refer to the Operation Manual "7 Troubleshooting" and perform required procedures. 7. Perform nozzle check again and check the condition of the print head. 0 Manual composition This product includes the following three manuals. If the nozzle check result indicates that there is a problem such as mentioned above in the check pattern, clean the head.
