Optional Toolsets Eye & Jitter The quality of cables/connectors/patch panels etc will have an effect on the quality of the SDI signal. If the signal is degraded or damage then errors will occur. The Rx Series allows the signal (physical layer) to be analyzed. This allows the Eye waveform to be quality checked and allows Jitter measurement of the signal to be check to ensure that it is within specified limits and therefore not going to cause data errors. [AE & AGE Modules] SDI Eye Analysis RTE (Real-Time Eye) technology for SMPTE compliance testing & troubleshooting Dual jitter thermometers with selectable filters (10/100Hz, 1/10/100kHz) Automatic amplitude, rise/fall time, under/overshoot and cable length measurements 1 to 10 eye display and user-selectable heatmap and persistence controls SDI Jitter Analysis Realtime SMPTE Jitter measurements down to 10Hz 10Hz, 100Hz, 1KHz, 100KHz filters 40ms or infinite persistence modes H, 2H, V trigger and sweep control 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 UI/Div vertical gain

Core Toolset Rx Series - The Eye Pattern Open Eye Ideal Eye Pattern The open eye is present when monitoring a SDI signal with minimal jitter Closed Eye Displaying Jitter The eye closes increasingly as the severity of the jitter, amplitude and noise on the SDI signal increases as shown here

Rx - Eye and Jitter Measurement The most critical measurement is the Alignment jitter Green = within specification Yellow = on edge of spec Red = out of specification Histograms are used to see where jitter is present on the waveform The shape of the waveform affects how far the signal can be transmitted without cable equalisation The measurements shown in white are within specified limits for current video format. The rise and fall times are affected by video standard, cable length, cable type and equipment Receiving equipment is susceptible to distorted waveform and jitter

Rx Series - Eye and Jitter Measurement The Jitter Analysis instrument allows the jitter to be displayed against time Jitter is measured as a proportion of Unit Interval any Alignment jitter above 0.5UI will cause data errors (relative to HD) The time base can be adjusted to establish if the jitter is line based or frame based

Why is Jitter Measurement important? HD-SDI and 3G-SDI are designed to use 75ohm coax and encode digital video as a single clock/data signal The signal is a square wave and cable, equipment and infrastructure has an effect on the signal Data can be corrupted in receiving equipment by jitter and waveform distortions caused by encoding methods and long cable lengths Measurement of jitter can be difficult on a distorted HD-SDI and 3G-SDI waveforms Ideally jitter is measured using 100% colour bars over a 1 Meter cable Eye waveform quality and jitter is important to manufacturers as these affect the total cable length that the equipment can drive without the need for cable equalisation Sending Equipment What are the causes? Includes clock phase jitter, amplitude jitter and wander. thermal and Shot Noise. Cabling & Infrastructure Waveform distortion due to equipment within the broadcast chain, long cable runs, poorly terminated or un-equalised cables, poor frequency response of cables or poor equipment return-loss. Electromagnetic interference in long cable runs that may be susceptible to the power grid and power switching Receiving Equipment Receiver phase lock loop errors in equipment decoding an SDI data stream. Data dependent jitter due to the actual data content that, even after randomisation, contains sequences of zeros or ones long enough for the clock recovery/regeneration to drift or loose phase lock with respect to the data.

Rx Series - How to measure Jitter Distortion The jitter measurement is quantified as a proportion of the Unit Interval from -0.5UI to +0.5UI Testing needs to focus on the amount of Alignment jitter. The worst case combination is 0.5 UI which is right on the sampling edge The SMPTE 424M standards requires that 3G-SDI Alignment Jitter recommends 0.2 UI (relaxed to less than 0.3 UI) and Timing Jitter is less than 2.0 UI It can be difficult to make exact measurement of jitter directly from the eye pattern so instrument such as the that automatically measure jitter are especially useful Sending Equipment Using a short (1metre) cable connected directly to the output of the Sending equipment we can measure the output jitter and check the waveform shape Cabling & Infrastructure Introducing a test pattern with a known level of jitter and known waveform shape into the infrastructure and monitoring the result allows closed loop testing to be performed Receiving Equipment Pathological and EQ test patterns can be introduced to check the susceptibility of the receiving equipment These consist of long sequences of zeros test the AC coupling and clock recovery/regeneration phase lock circuitry of the receiving equipment

Optional Toolsets - Generation [AG & AGE Modules] Video Generation 2K/3G/HD/SD-SDI signal generation including pathological test patterns for SDI stress testing (40 patterns in total) Moving test patterns including zone plate Loading of user-defined test patterns Ident, ST 352 payload ID and error generation Audio Generation Generation of up to 16 channels of audio Independent enabling of the 4 audio groups Selection of fixed or userdefinable tones or audio sources Master level control Phase inversion per channel Generator Timing User control of the timing of the generator output with respect to Reference Line and pixel control
