Rectilinear Crossings in Complete Balance -Partite -Uniform Hypergraphs Rahul Gangopahyay Saswata Shannigrahi arxiv:171.05539v1 [math.co] 15 Dec 017 December 18, 017 Abstract In this paper, we stuy the embeing of a complete balance -partite -uniform hypergraph with all its n vertices represente as points in general position in R an each hyperege rawn as a convex hull of corresponing vertices. We assume that the set of vertices is partitione into isjoint sets, each of size n, such that each of the vertices in a hyperege is from a ifferent partition. Two hypereges are sai to be crossing if they are vertex isjoint an contain a common point in their relative interiors. Using Generalize Colore Tverberg Theorem, we observe that such an embeing of a complete balance -partite -uniform hypergraph with n vertices contains Ω ( (8/3) /) (n/) ((n 1)/) crossing pairs of hypereges for sufficiently large n an. Using Gale Transform an Ham-Sanwich Theorem, we improve this lower boun to Ω ( ) (n/) ((n 1)/) for sufficiently large n an. Keywors: -Partite Hypergraph; Crossing Hypereges; Gale Transform; Generalize Colore Tverberg Theorem; Ham-Sanwich Theorem 1 Introuction The rectilinear rawing of a graph is efine as an embeing of the graph in R such that its vertices are represente as points in general position (i.e., no three vertices are collinear) an eges are rawn as straight line segments connecting the corresponing vertices. The rectilinear crossing number of a graph G, enote by cr(g), is efine as the minimum number of crossing pairs of eges among all rectilinear rawings of G. Determining the rectilinear crossing number of a graph is one of the most important problems in graph theory [1, 5, 6, 10]. In particular, fining the rectilinear crossing number of complete bipartite graphs is an active area of research [6, 11]. Let K n,n enote the complete bipartite graph having n vertices in each partition. The best-known lower an upper bouns on cr(k n,n ) are n(n 1) 5 Nahas [10] improve the lower boun on cr(k n,n ) to n/ (n 1)/ an n/ (n 1)/, respectively [6, 13]. n(n 1) 5 n/ (n 1)/ + 9.9 10 6 n 4 for sufficiently large n. Hypergraphs are natural generalizations of graphs. A hypergraph H is a pair (V, E), where V is a set of vertices an E is a set of subsets of V known as hypereges. A hypergraph H is calle -uniform if each hyperege contains vertices. A -uniform hypergraph H = (V, E) is sai to be -partite if there exist sets X 1, X,..., X such that V = i=1 X i, E X 1 X... X i X j = φ for all i an j satisfying 1 i < j. We call X i to be the i th partition of V. Moreover, H is calle balance if X 1 = X =... = X an complete if E = X 1 X... X. Let us enote by K {n 1,n,...,n } the complete -partite -uniform hypergraph with n i vertices in the i th partition for each i satisfying 1 i. In particular, let K {n, enote the complete balance -partite -uniform hypergraph with n vertices in each partition. A -imensional rectilinear rawing [] of a -uniform hypergraph H = (V, E) is an embeing of it in R such that its vertices are represente as points in general position (i.e., no + 1 vertices lie on a hyperplane) an its hypereges are rawn as ( 1)-simplices forme by the corresponing vertices. In a -imensional rectilinear rawing of H, two hypereges are sai to be crossing if they are vertex isjoint an contain a common point in their relative interiors [4]. The -imensional rectilinear crossing number of H, enote by cr (H), is efine as the minimum number of crossing pairs of hypereges among all -imensional rectilinear rawings of H. Let us mention a few existing results on the -imensional rectilinear crossing number of uniform hypergraphs. Dey an Pach [4] prove that cr (H) = 0 implies the total ( ) number of hypereges in H to be O( V 1 ). Anshu et. V al [, 3] showe that cr (H) = Ω( ) when H is a complete -uniform hypergraph. In this paper, we first use the Generalize Colore Tverberg Theorem an Lemma 1 to ob- serve a lower boun on cr K {n, mentione in Observation 1. Let us introuce a few more efinitions an notations use in its proof. Two -uniform hypergraphs H 1 = (V 1, E 1 ) an H = (V, E ) are isomorphic if there is a bijection f : V 1 V such that any set of vertices {u 1, u,..., u } is a hyperege in E 1 if an only if {f(u 1 ), f(u ),..., f(u )} is a hyperege in E. A hypergraph H = (V, E ) is calle an inuce sub-hypergraph of H = (V, E) if V V an E contains all hypereges of E spanne by the vertices in V. The convex hull of a finite point set S is enote by Conv(S). In particular, the (u 1)-simplex spanne by a set U containing u points (1 u + 1) in general position in R is enote by Conv(U). A (u 1)-simplex Conv(U) spanne by a point set U containing u points an a (w 1)-simplex Conv(W ) spanne by the point set W containing w points cross if U W = φ an they contain a common point in their relative interiors. Generalize Colore Tverberg Theorem. [8, 1] Let {C 1, C,..., C k+1 } be a collection of k +1 isjoint finite point sets in R. Each of these sets is assume to be of carinality at least r 1, where r is a prime integer satisfying the inequality r( k). Then, there exist r isjoint sets S 1, S,..., S r such that S i k+1 j=1 C j, r i=1 Conv(S i) φ an S i C j = 1 for all i an j satisfying 1 i r an 1 j k + 1. Lemma 1. [3] Consier two isjoint point sets U an W, each a subset of a set of points in general position in R, such that U = u, W = w, u, w an u + w + 1. If the (u 1)-simplex forme by U crosses the (w 1)-simplex forme by W, then the ( 1)-simplices forme by any two isjoint point sets U U an W W satisfying U = W = also cross. Observation 1. cr K {n, = Ω ( (8/3) /) (n/) ((n 1)/) for sufficiently large n an.
Proof. Let us consier the hypergraph H = K {n, such that all its vertices are in general position in R. Let H = K 3,..., 3,,..., be an inuce sub-hypergraph of it containing 3 vertices / +1 / 1 from each of the first / + 1 partitions an vertices from each of the remaining / 1 partitions. Let C i enote the i th paritition of the vertices of H for each i in the range 1 i / + 1. Note that C 1, C,..., C / +1 are isjoint sets in R an each of them contains 3 vertices. Clearly, these sets satisfy the conition of the Generalize Colore Tverberg Theorem for k = / an r =. Since the vertices of H are in general position in R, the Generalize Colore Tverberg Theorem implies that there exists a pair of crossing / -simplices spanne by U / +1 j=1 C j an W / +1 j=1 C j such that they are vertex isjoint an U C j = 1, W C j = 1 for each j in the range 1 j / + 1. Lemma 1 implies that U an W can be extene to form / 1 istinct crossing pairs of ( 1)-simplices, where each ( 1)-simplex contains exactly one vertex from each partition of H. This implies that cr (H ) / 1. Note that each crossing pair of hypereges corresponing to these ( 1)-simplices is containe in (n ) / +1 istinct inuce sub-hypergraphs of H, each of which is isomorphic to H. Moreover, there are to H. ( n 3 ) / +1 ( n ) / 1 istinct inuce sub-hypergraphs of H, each of which is isomorphic This implies cr K {n, / 1 = n (n 1) 6 / +1 = Ω ( (8/3) /) (n/) ((n 1)/). ( ) n / +1 3 ( ) n / 1 / (n ) / +1 In Section 3, we improve the lower boun on cr K {n, as follows. To the best of our knowlege, this is the first non-trivial lower boun on this number. Theorem 1. cr K {n, = Ω ( ) (n/) ((n 1)/) for sufficiently large n an. Techniques Use The Gale Transform is a powerful tool in combinatorial geometry. Let P = < p 1, p,..., p m > be a sequence of m + 1 points in R such that the points in P affinely span R. The Gale Transform maps the point sequence P to a sequence of m vectors D(P ) = < v 1, v,,..., v m > in R m 1. Let the coorinate of the i th point p i be (x i 1, xi,..., xi ). To compute the Gale Transform D(P ) of P, we consier the following matrix M(P ). x 1 1 x 1 x m 1 x 1 x x m M(P ) =.... x 1 x x m 1 1 1 3
Note that the rank of M(P ) is + 1, since points in P affinely span R. The Rank-nullity theorem [9] implies that the imension of the null space of M(P ) is m 1. Let {(b 1 1, b1,..., b1 m), (b 1, b,..., b m),..., (b1 m 1, b m 1,..., b m 1 m )} be a basis of this null space. Let D(P ) be the sequence of m vectors (b 1 1, b 1,..., bm 1 1 ), (b 1, b,..., bm 1 ),..., (b 1 m, b m,..., bm m 1 ). Note that D(P ) can also be consiere as a point sequence in R m 1, which we enote by < v 1, v,,..., v m >. In the following, we mention some properties of D(P ) that woul be use in Section 3. For the sake of completeness, we give a proof of Lemma 3. On the other han, the proof of Lemma is straightforwar an we omit it here. Lemma. [7] If the points in P are in general position in R, each collection of m 1 vectors in D(P ) spans R m 1. Lemma 3. [7] Let h be a linear hyperplane, i.e., a hyperplane passing through the origin, in R m 1. Let D + (P ) an D (P ) enote two sets of vectors such that the vectors in D + (P ) an D (P ) lie in the opposite open half-spaces h + an h of h, respectively. Then, the convex hull of the point set P a = {p i p i P, v i D + (P )} an the convex hull of the point set P b = {p j p j P, j D (P )} cross. Proof. Let us assume that the hyperplane h is given by the equation m 1 α i x i = 0. Let D 0 (P ) = {v k v k D(P ), v k lies on h}. This implies that there exists a vector (µ 1, µ,..., µ m ) = α 1 (b 1 1, b 1,..., b1 m) + α (b 1, b,..., b m) +... + α m 1 (b m 1 1, b m 1,..., b m 1 m ) such that µ i > 0 for each v i D + (P ), < 0 for each v j D (P ) an µ k = 0 for each v k D 0 (P ). Since this vector (µ 1, µ,..., µ m ) lies in the null space of M(P ), it satisfies the following equation. x 1 1 x 1 x m 1 x 1 x x m µ 1 0 µ.... x 1 x x m. = 0. µ 1 1 1 m 0 From the equation above, we obtain the following. µ i p i = p j, Rearranging the equations above, we obtain the following. µ i p i = µ i µ i It shows that Conv(P a ) an Conv(P b ) cross. µ i = Let us also state the Ham-Sanwich Theorem here. µ i = i=1 p j = 1 Ham-Sanwich Theorem. [7] There exists a ( 1)-hyperplane h which simultaneously bisects finite point sets P 1, P,..., P in R such that each of the open half-spaces create by h contains at Pi most points from each of the sets P i, 1 i. 4
3 Lower Boun on the -Dimensional Rectilinear Crossing Number of K {n, In this Section, we use the Gale Transform an the Ham-Sanwich Theorem to improve the previously observe lower boun on the -imensional rectilinear crossing number of K {n, for sufficiently large n an. Proof of Theorem 1: Let us consier the hypergraph H = K {n, such that all its vertices be an inuce sub-hypergraph of it containing are in general position in R. Let H = K 3,3,,..., 3 vertices from each of the first partitions an vertices from each of the remaining ( ) partitions. Let P =< p 1, p, p 3,..., p +1, p + > be a sequence of the vertices of H such that {p 1, p, p 3 } belongs to the first partition L 1, {p 4, p 5, p 6 } belongs to the secon partition L an {p k+1, p k+ } belongs to the k th partition L k for each k in the range 3 k. We consier the Gale Transform of P an obtain a sequence of + vectors D(P ) = < v 1, v, v 3,..., v +1, v + > in R +1 such that any set containing + 1 of these vectors spans R +1. As mentione before, D(P ) can also be consiere as a sequence of points in R +1. In orer to apply the Ham-Sanwich Theorem in R +1, we color the origin with color c 0, {v 1, v, v 3 } with color c 1, {v 4, v 5, v 6 } with color c an {v k+1, v k+ } with color c k for each k in the range 3 k. The Ham-Sanwich Theorem guarantees that there exists a hyperplane h such that it passes through the origin an bisects the set colore with c i for each i in the range 1 i. Note that at most points of D(P ) lie on the linear hyperplane h, since any set of +1 vectors in D(P ) spans R +1. This implies that there exist at least + points in D(P ) that lie either in the positive open half-space h + or in the negative open half-space h prouce by h. Let D + (P ) an D (P ) be the two sets of points lying in h + an h, respectively. The Ham-Sanwich Theorem ensures that at most points of D(P ) can lie in one of h + an h. This implies that D + (P ) an D (P ). Moreover, note that points having the same color cannot lie in the same open half-space. Lemma 3 implies that there exist a (u 1)-simplex Conv(P a ) spanne by the vertices of P a P an a (w 1)-simplex Conv(P b ) spanne by the vertices of P b P such that the following properties are satisfie. (I) Conv(P a ) an Conv(P b ) cross. (II) u + w + (III) P a L i 1 for each i in the range 1 i (IV) P b L i 1 for each i in the range 1 i Lemma 1 implies that the crossing between two lower-imensional simplices Conv(P a ) an Conv(P b ) can be extene to a crossing pair of ( 1)-simplices spanne by vertex sets U, W P satisfying U P a an W P b, respectively. In fact, it is always possible to a vertices to P a an P b in such a way that following conitions hol for U an W. (I) U L i = 1 for each i in the range 1 i (II) W L i = 1 for each i in the range 1 i 5
( ) n ( ) n The argument above establishes the fact that cr (H ) 1. Note that H contains 3 istinct inuce sub-hypergraphs, each of which is isomorphic to H. Since each crossing pair of hypereges is containe in (n ) istinct inuce sub-hypergraphs of H, each of which is ( ) isomorphic to H, we obtain cr K {n, n ( ) n /(n ) = n (n 1) 3 9 = Ω ( ) (n/) ((n 1)/).
