Honors Pre-Calculus Course Description and Philosophy The Pre-Calculus course presented at the high school is an accelerated course intended to serve those students who have successfully completed the course Algebra 2 Honors. The purpose of the course is to provide advanced analysis of functions including topics in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and limit theory. Much attention is given to the understanding and nature of proof. The course is geared at preparing the student for their first course in Calculus or other collegiate mathematics courses. Pre-Calculus Honors challenges students to master mathematical concepts required as a foundation for the future study of Calculus and encourages students to become critical and independent mathematical problem solvers and to reason mathematically using higher order thinking. Further, students will use current technology such as the graphing calculator as well as other available computer software such as desmos and geogebra. The applications in this course will reinforce skills students will carry through to adulthood and utilize in a society increasingly dominated by technology and quantitative methods.
